..to think that being charged DOUBLE PRICE for highlights because my hair is "too thick" is taking the piss?

My hairdressers is under new managment

The person that normally does my hair is not working Saturday any more.
So I had someone else.

All good, hair looks lovely. Go to pay....£90.

When I question why, because its normally only £45 she said my hair was "too thick"

Really? I know it did not require double the amount of time, foil or bleach.

FFS, my hair is not that thick. The way she was going on, it was like thickness of epic proportions that should be in the Record breakers book or something.

So....is that reasonable? Or taking the piss?

What a foolish manager. They have obviously lost your custom and that of the people who you tell how you have been treated. Glad her business can afford to be so choosy and risk pissing off customers in this financial climate.

OP, I have hair extensions, and my hair is massively long and thick. I don't get charged any extra, in fact since I've had them, the hairdresser has spent extra time styling it, free of charge, because she likes it. The first time she spent around 20 minutes putting curls in, the second time she put a top plait in it, which took about 15 minutes.

I pay £45 for a colour with foils. I'd be really taken aback if I was asked to pay extra, and would simply go somewhere else.

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/03/2013 17:51

I have short fine hair and don't get a discount, highlights are a fixed price.
Maybe I should have a word with my hairdresser.

Your hair sounds similar to mine - mine is shoulder length and thick, but not outrageously so, especially as I ask them to thin it each time I have it cut.

They've charged double for the highlight part for me each time too - until I read here I felt annoyed about it but it never occurred to me to query it! Given they know I want them to thin it, why couldn't they thin it before putting the foils on, so saving me money? Ah, stupid question.

We've moved now otherwise I'd raise a stink about it next time I think. The place was more profit-orientated than most, judging from the things the people washing my hair would tell me without me saying anything (well below minimum wage, treated them like dirt etc) but I was happy with what they did with my hair and didn't know of anywhere else I could trust!

ElkiesBrook · 09/03/2013 18:02

asking those with thicker hair to pay more is taking the piss

do you get charged more for a pedicure if you've got larger feet?

long hair, fair enough - it's a choice what length you keep your hair, but something you have no control over? no way

and what is their benchmark for 'thick' hair? surely that's relative?

alwayslateforwork · 09/03/2013 18:09

bargain price even at £90, tbh. I pay that here in the cheapo local hairdresser and my hair is an inch long at the longest point...

That said, I used to have very long hair and was paying double for a full head, as they used a lot more product.

I don't think I can get too excited about it. Are you sure it was because of your thick hair only, and they haven't whacked another £30 on because it was cut by the new girl (who also happens to be four times as qualified as your last hairdresser was)?

I don't think I've ever been told in advance how much my hair was going to be, nor do they advertise it, and I've been to a fair few salons.

I don't think I've ever paid as little as £45, and I'm 42 with a good memory!

I wouldn't piss them off too much - you'll end up paying more everywhere else, anyway!

TantrumsAndBalloons · 09/03/2013 18:12

I have no idea what constitutes "too thick" Grin

leQueen this ain't Toni and guy, not even close Grin

Oh well, I shall be going somewhere else now.

Now all I have to do is find a decent hairdresser....in fact I may have to do it myself :(

alwayslate it's half head highlights though.

I wouldn't pay £90 for half head highlights, I just wouldn't. Not from that salon. And the stylist who normally does my hair is a senior stylist, she has been at that salon for 5 years. The other stylist today was not a senior stylist

my highlights (and i have alot of hair) take hour and half to foil and costs £90

for half a head it's £50 and takes three quarters of an hour.

would be v pissed off to pay that for half a head!

willesden · 09/03/2013 18:42

Do people still have highlights? How very eighties Grin

germyrabbit · 09/03/2013 18:43

Hmm highlights have come along way since the 80s

Catchingmockingbirds · 09/03/2013 18:45

I have incredibly fine crap hair and I don't get to pay half price, the hairdresser was BU, especially not even telling you about the price increase until it was done.

ivykaty44 · 09/03/2013 18:54

Is the pricing board visible anywhere

Does the price for highlight state two prices for different hair types

If so did the stylist explain your hair was a certain type before the process started

If not go back and let them know you think they are trying it on and they can choose

Either money back and lose a customer

Or you will go to small claims court and local press

KittenCamile · 09/03/2013 19:01

I'm a colourist and I also teach. A half head of highlights in 30mins?! And you have thick hair! Its should take 45 to 75 mins to do a half head properly, a full head 1.5 to 2 hrs and if its thick maybe longer.

A price should be agreed durng the consultation if there is any change but it is common to charge extra if your appointment is going to take longer but you should be told before any colour is applied in case you don't agree.

Price lists quite often say FROM a certain price as each clients hair is different and may cost more. (I wouldn't charge extra for thick hair but I do charge a lot more than £90 to start with)

I think the total you paid in the end is reasonble for thick hair but you should have been told before hand, the salon is at fault. There is no such thing as hair being 'too' thick!

expatinscotland · 09/03/2013 19:04

Don't go back.

Pandemoniaa · 09/03/2013 19:06

That's ludicrous. At my hairdressers you are charged for a whole or half head of highlights. Admittedly their prices start with "from" £XX but the end cost depends on whether you have a junior or senior stylist. I've got long hair and still pay the same as I did when it was several inches shorter. Admittedly, this may change as it gets even longer but I'd not get to the till and suddenly be told it was twice the price as the time before. That sort of trick is very shoddy business, imho and will do nothing to encourage future custom.

FairPhyllis · 09/03/2013 19:08

I have very thick hair and it's not unusual ime for places to charge a bit more for thick hair. Usually if you look on the website it gives an idea of what to expect. My salon's website says '$60 and up' for a half head of highlights. I think if they have to spend more time on it then fair enough.

Pandemoniaa · 09/03/2013 19:08

PS. I'm amazed that anyone can do half a head in 30 minutes. I have a really good colour specialist doing mine and it takes at least an hour. There's no way the job could be done properly in 30 minutes.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 09/03/2013 19:14

I think that was piss taking. If its new management fine, but as you are a regular customer they should inform you that what you have been acceptably paying for a long time has drastically increased for no reason.

I always used to get a discount of 50% when I got my eyebrows done as they are fine to start with and were always done in under 5 minutes Grin
