AIBU to paint my nails on the train?

No back story and a quick one.

I'm going on a long ish train journey tomorrow for a weekend away with OH.

I can't paint my nails as I have work tomorrow and nail varnish is strictly forbidden at work.

I am walking straight from work to the train station, in order to catch the earliest train to where we are going.

I want sexy, red nails for our weekend but the only opportunity will be the train journey!

Is it horrible, smelly and socially unacceptable to paint them on a train?

I'm thinking yes...

Also, I could do it in our hotel. Should have thought of that before!

A friend of mine gets horrendous migraines that can last for ages and the smell of nail varnish is one of his triggers.

Don't do it. People have to pay a fuck of a lot to even use the trains so it's considerate to try to be as respectful as possible to those we have to share confined space with.

Trills · 08/03/2013 09:20

Wouldn't bother me.

I might watch you though, as I watch people putting on makeup on the train, to admire your skill.

SomethingProfound · 08/03/2013 09:21

I have on occasion painted my nails on the train, mainly through boredom on long journeys Blush.

It never occurred to me how bad some people might find the smell, I defiantly do not have the nose of a bloodhound.

Thank you MN for showing me the error of may ways, I will from now on refrain from this activity Grin.

whistleahappytune · 08/03/2013 09:39

Wouldn't bother me at all, but clearly it would others.

Could I suggest the following:

At work, apply your clear base coat during the day so it's completely dry by the time you get on the train. As it's clear and usually demi-matte, it should fall into your workplace "no varnish" rule.

Then, apply one coat in the bathroom of the train. Take your time to get it right as the first coat is always the hardest. Blow on it a bit to reduce the smell. Wait a few minutes and then return to your seat.

You will then only need to do another coat and then top coat at the hotel.

Have a lovely weekend, OP

Please don't it makes some people very ill, I would ask you not to if you did it near me.

LemonPeculiarJones · 08/03/2013 09:49

If you paint your nails in the loo, though, the next person to use the toilet will get an even more intense hit of the smell in an even more confined space!

Just wait and do it after your journey.

I'd only do it if I was sitting in first class where there's a table and where there are fewer people to annoy.

willyoulistentome · 08/03/2013 09:53

Personally, I would have no issue with you doing your FINGER nails on a train next to me, but toes - UUURGGGG.

But I didn;t realise the smell of nail varnish was so offensive to other people, so as so many people above have said no - then no I wouldn;t do it.

Do it at the hotel.

whistleahappytune · 08/03/2013 10:04

Lemon I think the smell of nail varnish on a train toilet is the least offensive smell anyone's likely to encounter. I speak from bitter experience.

LemonPeculiarJones · 08/03/2013 10:07

whistle hehe Grin

At least other people's crap doesn't trigger migraines though (although I'm not sure on that one)!

DeskPlanner · 08/03/2013 19:20

I remember this coming up on here before and it was deemed very much to not be on. I wouldn't have a problem with it though.

TheChaoGoesMu · 08/03/2013 19:26

It wouldn't bother me at all. But then again I dont mind people eating hot food on trains either.

NotSoNervous · 08/03/2013 19:28

Go for it Grin people do alot worse

TooMuchRain · 08/03/2013 19:29

I wouldn't like the smell either - but it's less offensive than other things (and re other comments 'no-one complained' doesn't mean no-one minded btw)

DameFanny · 08/03/2013 19:32

I used to put on make up on the 530 to London - as long as I got my mascara on before the track went rough at diss it was fine, and I figure anyone who could be bothered to complain was far too awake for their own good.

But I wouldn't have used nail polish, or perfume.

Do your prep and base coat tonight, then two quick coats and a top coat at the hotel?

Bogeyface · 08/03/2013 19:46

All this "base coat/top coat" stuff......

Am I the only one who just bungs on 2 coats of colour and then picks it off the next day because I can't find the remover?!

MechanicalTheatre · 08/03/2013 19:51

Nah I'm with you Bogeyface. Just cannot be arsed.

INeverSaidThat · 08/03/2013 19:53

Finola1step · 08/03/2013 20:12

Please don't. But if you do, be prepared for long, hard stares and plenty of tutting. A few months ago, on my regular commute, a woman started to paint her nails. Man sitting opposite very politely and firmly told her how rude she was being. I could have cheered.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/03/2013 20:20

I used to commute from Milton Keynes to London. I am sure some of the passengers on that train thought they were in their own private little bubble, and no-one could see them. I remember one woman, wearing sandals, picking bits off her feet and eating it, and a man who used to floss his teeth and spray all of his fellow passengers with the bits of crud that came out of them. Another woman who used to paint her face with the contents of a briefcase filled with make up (this was probably the most preferable). And one who painted her nails and managed to tip the contents of the pot all over her work suit when the train lurched just past Bletchley.

FamiliesShareGerms · 08/03/2013 20:26

No, it would BU (as you know!)

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 08/03/2013 21:59

I doubt anyone would notice in real life.

AmandaPayne · 08/03/2013 22:00

God no, the smell makes me want to barf.

Maggie111 · 08/03/2013 22:34

YABU - When I go somewhere, I paint my nails just before I get to the train station so I can sit and let them dry on my journey.

Can you do them in the toilets at work? If not I'd do them on the train station platform.
