when I pick up from school they can get out any time between 3.05 and 3.25 actual finish time is 3.15. I spoke to teacher and she said they don't let them leave till they are all standing quietly with coats and bags, which can take a while. and they sometimes let them out early if they have had a bad afternoon and they are fed up with them, they were her words.

I sympathise, I couldn't do their job. but its a long time for all us parents and childminders to be standing outside, freezing often with little kids too. teacher said just get there at 3.20 and if they have let them out early they'll just take mine to the office to wait. this has happened once when he first started and he was distraught thinking he had been forgotten. it wasn't just him there was other equally upset children. so suppose they have given me a solution my problem if I don't like it? is this what all schools do?

YANBU talk to the HT if they are having them out in the cold 10 minutes before the bell goes

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 07/03/2013 23:39

I would never allow my class to leave before the home time bell. Does your school not have one?

Yanbu.

Greensleeves · 07/03/2013 23:41

That's preposterous. Complain.

calmlychaotic · 07/03/2013 23:41

no there's no bell. might buy them one!

This is not good! Of course occasionally things happen and the class might be a couple of minutes late (not much more though :-$). Letting the children out early is not on. I wouldn't like her comments about bad afternoons and getting fed up with the children either.

Cezzy · 07/03/2013 23:49

My DDs class is often late out and normally when it's raining, snowing or freezing and we are waiting outside.

SarkyPants · 07/03/2013 23:51

Never early.
Occasionally late.

Them's the rules :)

forgetmenots · 07/03/2013 23:51

YANBU, I find it weird - is it a very small school? Otherwise how on earth do all the classes know they're finishing early? Crazy.

Heavensmells · 07/03/2013 23:53

YANBU that's ridiculous. If speak to the head teacher about it.

HerbyVore · 07/03/2013 23:55

That's bonkers, I think there must be some misunderstanding somewhere.

MechanicalTheatre · 07/03/2013 23:56

That is awful. You can't just let kids out of school early because you can't deal with them any more! FFS!

Flojobunny · 07/03/2013 23:59

YANBU this is ridiculous. They shouldn't let the kids out before 3.15 and they shouldn't be more than 5 minutes late.

calmlychaotic · 08/03/2013 00:06

there are only 2 classes in this part of the building so doesn't affect rest of the school, I'm going to complain glad its not normal.

noblegiraffe · 08/03/2013 08:33

I wish I could chuck my classes out early if I got fed up with them but it's not allowed. Teachers can't just knock off early, that's outrageous!

Eebahgum · 08/03/2013 11:32

The early thing is insane. Does she not know the children are legally her responsibility until the end of the school day? Ie if one of them had a terrible accident at 3:10 people would want to know why she want supervising them at that time. I make a point of always letting children out on time - bit some colleagues are very regularly late. IMO it's just not fair - if the children were 10 minutes late in the nothing or the parents were 10 minutes late at the end of the day we wouldn't be happy - it's simply rude to not give them the same respect in return.

lrichmondgabber · 08/03/2013 11:35

you were wise to publicise this

CloudsAndTrees · 08/03/2013 11:36

The teacher is being very unreasonable.

As a parent, I don't like it when my children come out of school late. As a TA, I apologise for all the times I have mistimed the end of day story and have sent children out late. Blush

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 08/03/2013 11:42

YANBU

At our school the gates open between 3.10 and 3.15 and the children are out at 3.15 or as close as possible to it. The younger ones are often out a few minutes earlier than the older ones, which I think they do so people can collect the younger ones from their playground first and then get the older ones after.

Teachers shouldn't be letting them out 10 minutes early just because they have had enough, I could imagine what would happen if everyone else left work 10 minutes early for that reason! Neither should they be 10 minutes late.

You should complain, it isn't right.

MrsMushroom · 08/03/2013 11:42

YANBU at all. It's the same at my DD's school and I moan about it to other parents sometimes but they don't seem bothered!

School finishes at 3.20 but we are standing there till gone 3.30 and it's too long. If the DC are taking ages to pack up, the teacher needs to work this out with them....find incentives or start earlier.

Blatherskite · 08/03/2013 11:43

Never early.
Occasionally late.

They're the rules at our school too. It's a bit miserable if it's cold/wet outside and the end of day story runs over so the parents/guardians/little siblings are left waiting outside but not the end of the world. I wouldn't be at all happy if my child was let out early or left upset because he thought he'd been forgotten because the teacher was 'fed up with them' though! Shock 'd be seeing the HT I think.

Like Eebahgum says, the school would not be happy if the children were 10 minutes late in the morning so it's only fair that the school plays by the same rules at the end of the day too.

MrsMushroom · 08/03/2013 11:44

We all stood in pouring rain yesterday, some with babies and toddlers and I could see the teacher effing about inside (reception) and I felt so cross on behalf of the soggy little ones.

FelicityWasCold · 08/03/2013 11:45

Unbelievable. The school are BVU.

They should be out at 3.15 on a good day, 3.25 at the absolute latest if they have been really badly behaved.

Never early ffs!

Complain to the head.

FelicityWasCold · 08/03/2013 11:46

Oh and while you are talking to the head be sure to quote exactly what the teacher said about being fed up with them, that's outrageous!

kilmuir · 08/03/2013 11:47

Where do the children go if let out 1o mins early
