when I pick up from school they can get out any time between 3.05 and 3.25 actual finish time is 3.15. I spoke to teacher and she said they don't let them leave till they are all standing quietly with coats and bags, which can take a while. and they sometimes let them out early if they have had a bad afternoon and they are fed up with them, they were her words.

I sympathise, I couldn't do their job. but its a long time for all us parents and childminders to be standing outside, freezing often with little kids too. teacher said just get there at 3.20 and if they have let them out early they'll just take mine to the office to wait. this has happened once when he first started and he was distraught thinking he had been forgotten. it wasn't just him there was other equally upset children. so suppose they have given me a solution my problem if I don't like it? is this what all schools do?

Never out early here. Generally a few minutes late.

Arithmeticulous · 08/03/2013 11:49

Slightly late is fine. Early is not.

If you are always there on time, get to the HT and complain immediately.
It's not even about the time keeping, it's the fact they're prepared to let them out early when they can't be arsed that is bothering me having read this.

Thats ridiculous. Firstly they should not sack of 10 minutes early because they are pissed off with the kids. If they did that every day half an hour of education would be lost per week.
Secondly it is not acceptable to be 10 minutes late on a regular basis. Some parents may rely on public transport to collect children. I can understand 5 minutes late now and then, but they need to have a decent end of day routine that gets everyone packed up on time.

It isn't what all schools do and it is even more unprofessional to admit it. I would speak to the headteacher.

YANBU
Standing about at the front of school with toddlers where there is nowhere for them to saflely run off, but where other toddlers to play with are present is never a good place to be.

We had a teacher who liked to finish reading stories on early swimming lesson day. She was not popular!
Our school isn't in town and many clubs assume your 5 not 20 minutes down the road. Letting the DCs out late doesn't end well.

StanleyLambchop · 08/03/2013 11:57

They chuck them out early because they are fed-up with them? What if they are fed up with them at 10.45 in the morning?

My dc's school are always running late- I am very hardy now as I have spent sooo much time outside waiting in the horrible weather!!

stealthsquiggle · 08/03/2013 11:58

Never early.

There have been occasions when a class/teacher had clearly reached breaking point and they are out in the playground letting off steam (under supervision) at the end of the day - only to be rounded up and taken in to collect their book bags etc and sent back out again.

Never more than 5 minutes late.

Yanbu, this sounds like very strange practice! Our children finish at 3.15 and that is when they are let out!
