To be upstairs with a glass of red keeping away from IL's!

It's been a long week so far and still a couple of days to go before my house is back to normal. I can't do anything without MIL saying "I'LL DO THAT!" but then I catch her saying to FIL when asks if she's tidying up "well SOMEONE'S got to do it!". FIL also annoyed me yesterday when my friend called to give a birthday present to DD. Both IL's were getting agitated because dinner was timed for 6pm precisely so they're pacing up and down with miserable expressions while me and friend were chatting. Then FIL pipes up "right, shall we dish up then?!" Shock so bloody rude.
Sorry just needed to vent a little... And..breathe!

YANBU!!!

GlaikitFizzog · 06/03/2013 17:57

Can you fake a dose of the skits and get them to leave for fear of "infecting" them?

GlaikitFizzog · 06/03/2013 17:59

Oh and yanbu! Sounds like hell Wine

pictish · 06/03/2013 18:00

God...how rude regarding your friend! For crying out loud!

ceeveebee · 06/03/2013 18:01

Ha! YANBU
I used to disappear upstairs to express milk for 30 mins or so every night when my PILs came to stay, actually it only took 5 minutes and I just read a book or mumsnetted for the rest of the time!

littlewhitebag · 06/03/2013 18:01

Wine Wine Wine

You need it!

PopeBenedictsP45 · 06/03/2013 18:03

You need to take the rest of the bottle up, too.

LemonBreeland · 06/03/2013 18:06

YANBU they sound very rude. I would be having a lot of migraines.

digerd · 06/03/2013 18:07

Phew!! How you kept your temper, I don't know. They are nasty and treating you like dirt.
Don't suppose OH could tell them not to be so rude?

poppycock6 · 06/03/2013 18:08

If only I thought that would work Glaikit I would try it Grin. They're very peculiar. I asked FIL earlier if he'd like a piece of cake and his reply was "no but I'd like the heating on" I mean you just wouldn't would you? It's very strained when they're here. I've known them a long time but I've never felt relaxed around them. They're highly organised and complain about others a lot

Ruprekt · 06/03/2013 18:08

I would take the bottle wine with my ipad and go for a looooong bath with bubbles and watch iplayer. SmileSmileSmileSmile

poppycock6 · 06/03/2013 18:09

If MIL asks for a job to do I would tell MIL in a 'jokey' manner I would love you to help as long as you don't play the martyr to FIL later...I tried that with your son, it didn't work for me so I'm hoping it wont work for you or I'll be jealous!

Cheeky about dishing up Shock. Next time I would take control back and say with a smile, "You are allowed to get a biscuit whilst I chat and YOU wait.

HeathRobinson · 06/03/2013 18:10

Why shouldn't fil ask for the heating to be on, if he's cold? Confused

Ledkr · 06/03/2013 18:10

Gosh are you my sil? That is EXACTLY.like my pil. They went to see my brand new grandchild but fil kept saying "we better go cos ledkrs cooking" soooo rude. My ds was fuming.
Why does their world revolve around mealtimes? They nearly passed out last visit cos there was no cake or desert Hmm
Stay up there. I go to bed around 9 when mine come just to get away from the incessant small talk and endless drinks!

poppycock6 · 06/03/2013 18:10

Good idea Ruprekt. Think I might just do that.

Point taken Heath. It's just the sarcastic tone in him sometimes which bugs me but I'm prob oversensitive!

OP posts:
HeathRobinson · 06/03/2013 18:16

Yes, I know what you mean about the sarcastic tone. Some people never seem to ask for things normally.

thebody · 06/03/2013 18:19

Have the bottle chik.

They do get peculiar about food

My parents have turned into hobbits in their 70s and their day revolves around food. They can't understand anyone eating what they don't like either. Most odd.

My DM cooked a roast dinner once and after the meal he said "the roast potatoes were nice but not up to the standards of my beloved!" MIL just nodded. My DM's face was picture! I mean you just couldn't make it up! I'm wondering if he's related to Prince Phillip actually Grin

YANBU they are just bloody rude!
Good luck with them, probably only another 10-20 or maybe more years of it Sad

WhatchaMaCalllit · 06/03/2013 18:45

I was going to suggest taking the whole bottle and not just the glass Smile

LemonBreeland · 06/03/2013 21:02

Dearly departed FIL who was lovely had a way of asking stuff too. He once asked if there was any news on where we lived. Why not just say can I watch the news?

hwjm1945 · 06/03/2013 22:35

Lemon my FIL does f all when here and asks for things e.g. cuppa by saying "May I have...." and then waiting for me to jump to it. Thinks by asking v . Politely the onerousness of his request is somehow reduced.when I said certainly, help you and gestured to the kettle, he pretended not to understand.I too go to bed at 9
