To think buses should do child day tickets?

We were visiting family in the midlands and my OH took one of our kids on the bus to town just for a treat as he loves buses.

He got an adult day ticket but had to buy 2 singles as they don't do child day tickets which made it nearly as much as an adult ticket!

I wrote an email and asked why they don't do child day tickets. Weeks later I get a phone call and the reason they've given the complaints department is the rising cost of fuel etc!

I said they could still do day tickets if they wanted as what the difference doing it for adults?

I told her that our first buses do a £2 day ticket for children so why couldn't they.

She just said errr that's the reason they've given us!

I was nice about it and wasn't rude, just said I think it's expensive. I have posted on their twitter and fb page asking the same question.

I don't expect anything from them, I'm just annoyed!

I expect to be told I am unreasonable but I'm just feeling that way out this week! I can't even blame pmt

I guess because the child still takes up a seat so why would they be cheaper than an adult day ticket?

KellyElly · 06/03/2013 15:52

They should as they are cheaper on the train. I think in London all under 11's travel free on the tube as well.

x2boys · 06/03/2013 16:00

I dont think bus companies get it their prices are ludicrous[ i,m a regular bus user ] when i take the kids on the bus only one i pay for as my youngest is two its actually cheaper to get a taxi i live nr bolton they will soon price themselves out of the market

One of the top things about London: free bus travel for U16s, as long as once they are 11 they have a Zip Card, which costs £10.

WorraLiberty · 06/03/2013 16:06

Kelly here in London they travel free on the tube until they're 5yrs old and then parents have to pay a discounted price.

ChaoticisasChaoticdoes · 06/03/2013 16:06

Our bus company do child day tickets or they used to. As far as I know they still do.

Got a nice surprise yesterday when I got on the bus to find out they have a new police of charging a cheaper fare between 9am and 2.30/3.30pm.

CalamityJan · 06/03/2013 16:12

Worra, children 5-10 can travel free on the tube if they have a 5-10 Zip card. And completely free U5.

CalamityJan · 06/03/2013 16:13

Sorry - U5s always free
5-10 free if travelling with an adult with a valid ticket - up to 4 children per adult
5-10 free if travelling alone but have a 5-10 zip card.

Wewereherefirst · 06/03/2013 16:16

Ours does a £1 off peak day ticket when they're with a paying adult.

KellyElly · 06/03/2013 16:18

Kelly here in London they travel free on the tube until they're 5yrs old and then parents have to pay a discounted price. Really? Only two more years of DD travelling free then :(

WorraLiberty · 06/03/2013 16:20

Oh I didn't realise that Calamity thanks, that's handy to know.

WorraLiberty · 06/03/2013 16:21

Sorry Kelly, Calamity was right.

I came to London recently with ds1 and when I asked to buy him a ticket they said 11 and unders are free on the tube. He is 13 but the ticket man basically told me to lie. I got a travel card anyway.

5madthings · 06/03/2013 16:24

www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/underground.htm

Here children under 11 are free on tube and dlr.

5madthings · 06/03/2013 16:26

www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14554.aspx

Here they need a card if they are traveling without an adult or iuf they look over 10.

5madthings · 06/03/2013 16:27

That link says they travel free on buses as well! Didn't know that.

KellyElly · 06/03/2013 16:29

They do, Worra is just trying to confuse us. She's an agent for TFL trying to make us buy tickets for 5 year olds Grin

WilsonFrickett · 06/03/2013 16:30

Yep, loved travelling in London recently with DS, just jumped on and off everything with my Oyster card. And our bus company here do a child day ticket. Which isn't much use to you OP...

5madthings · 06/03/2013 16:33

We go quite often with the madthings and I have never paid so was wondering if I had been travelling illegally! Ds1 is now 13 so pay food him.

Here ds1 gets a bus pass that we pay monthly for, can buy a three monthly or yearly one. It let's his use all the buses in the area. He needs it to get to school.

But day tickets etc are expensive, we walk mainly!

BringBackBod · 06/03/2013 16:38

YANBU
I'm in the east midlands. They recently stopped the child day rider tickets for under 13s.
This means we have to pay for each journey (at 75% of adult ticket) or buy an adult day rider.
My teenage Ds can travel more cheaply by bus than my 8 year old.

cateerob · 06/03/2013 17:08

we live in london, its great my daughter is 16 gets free bus travel with her zip card and its about 50p a tube journey as long as they are at school its free , she goes everywhere on the bus ..

littlemisssunny · 06/03/2013 17:37

We have Oyster cards as we have family in central London and its great that under 11s travel free, we can ride around on the bus all day and know the maximum charge is whatever the max is on the Oyster card it's a cheap day out :o

FierceBadIggi · 06/03/2013 19:17

Has anyone ever seen a child between the ages of 5 and 10 travelling alone on the tube?

CalamityJan · 06/03/2013 19:23

No, but 11 year olds do, routinely, if it is their school route.

Probably some 10 year olds do.
