Lego advertised in the Sun

castellburt · 06/03/2013 01:45

Am I being unreasonable? but I have decided never to buy Lego again until they stop advertising in the Sun. I also want to ban boobs in the Sun Newspaper on page 3......I work in schools occasionally and I am sick of all the nudity in newspapers I use to make artwork with young children. I also am sick of Amazon not paying taxes, and extremely sick that they were selling Tshirts praising rape and the murder of women.....what kind of world do we want for our children.

Sometimes brands don't get chosen where they are placed. They can just see a brief such as middle-market family newspaper, bought by 500k daily, and turns out to be the Daily Mail. Or they buy adspace within groups not realising how many papers they own - but not always

Considering LEGOs empire and the fact their are more LEGO pieces in circulation than people, your boycott wont have much effect.

AmberLeaf · 06/03/2013 02:05

I buy lego for my son.

I don't buy the sun, so not an issue for me at all.

YABU.

castellburt · 06/03/2013 02:28

Surely the Sun is an issue for everyone??? We all live as one community, what other children see and what helps them to develop their sense of values and their ability to love and care depends on what influences the people around them. I think this is especially in the case of boys.

Ha ha I take your point about the Lego empire, I hadn't thought of it like that. I noticed a petition going around to take Lego ads out of the Sun, so far 11,000 have voted-it was started by a Dad who did not want his little boy's toys associated with Page 3.
83,000 have voted to get rid of Page 3. It was started by a female student. Someone's daughter.....good for her.

YANBU but AIBU is not the forum for this. Don't expect to get much support as so many people just wilfully do not get the issue.

AmberLeaf · 06/03/2013 02:54

I would vote to get rid of page 3.

But I just don't agree that going after Lego is the way to go.

My son is massively into Lego, I don't consider it to be associated with page 3.

I also think that your opening post is about 5 threads all rolled into one and would be better if you focused on 1-2 points.

Lueji · 06/03/2013 04:03

I thought Lego had made a page 3 girl construction. Grin

HollyBerryBush · 06/03/2013 05:58

If we didn't buy products becaue we didnt like where they were advertised, none of us would ever do any food shooping. al the supermarkets advertise in the tabloids.

The editor was talking about removing P3 as it is an outdated concept, so dont be taking any credit if it does eventually go - it's been on the agenda for ages.

castellburt · 06/03/2013 09:50

It has been on the agenda for ages to get rid of page 3? I did not know this ! What great news! When I work in schools and find little children poring over page 3 nudes on the newspaper sheets put by the teacher to cover the tables I think as adults we have set such a low standard for our children. I don't expect to be given credit for the removal of page 3, but as my children grow up I want them to know what I believe and why.

castellburt · 06/03/2013 09:54

Re my opening post, I was illustrating my basic point that we are surrounded by extreme negativity towards women which unless we parent carefully will appear normal to our growing children.

I have found the Lego Page 3 girl spoof, thanks Lueji.

It was Rupert Murdoch who said P.3 was an outdated institution - not the editor.

I think it will be phased out. However I think boycotting a product that occasionally advertises in a newspaper that shows nipples is a bit OTT but each to their own...

AmberLeaf · 06/03/2013 10:35

Im surprised by that, I would expect those pages to be removed prior to using the paper.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 06/03/2013 10:38

I would be more concerned by the fact that pages 3 from the sun newspaper have been used in your school than by lego advertising in it!

Lueji · 06/03/2013 11:09

Is there one????
Shock

TBH, I'm not that bothered about young children and page 3 breasts.

Most young boys see a lot more in the swimming pool changing rooms. :)

I'd be more concerned how the Sun makes its way to school. Do the teachers read it? Shock

mindosa · 06/03/2013 11:12

Well I would have thought that teachers have the good sense to get rid of page 3 but anyway........

Our school asks parents to bring in their old newspapers and we get a lot of The Sun, we just take out P3 (and anything else dodgy) before using it.

I'd vote against P3, but virtually every supermarket, toyshop, etc that i have near me advertises in there

castellburt · 06/03/2013 15:17

I am a puppeteer and visit many schools, the teachers have piles of newspapers, I have never yet found a paper without it's usual headlines of rapes, murders etc and girlie pictures, I think we get used to having this stuff around us so much that we are Immune to it , the way women are girls are objectified. Children are not immune and they are affected....in the long run if not immediately.

I don't think Lego occasionally advertises, but anyway they are reconsidering their position for when the contract with Sun comes to its natural end.

OP posts:
castellburt · 06/03/2013 15:18

I wonder why it is important to us that every supermarket advertises in the Sun?
Surely we can feed our families without the advertising in the Sun!

Nancy66 · 06/03/2013 16:47

...i don't think you understand the concept of advertising Castellburt

InWithTheITCrowd · 06/03/2013 18:13

If you're on Facebook, do a quick No More Page 3 search and it will link you to their page.
Also, Lego have announced today that they won't be partnering The Sun for any more promotions.
No More Page 3 were the ones who created Leanne the Lego Page 3 girl, and took her with them when they protested at Lego Head Office.
NMP3 also have a twitter account

willesden · 06/03/2013 19:04

Because boobies are so offensive? Have you ever visited the National Portrait Gallery? You may need a lie down afterwards if you do or get out your green biro to write lots of complaints.

CloudsAndTrees · 06/03/2013 19:09

The only person that would suffer if boycotted Lego would be my son, so I wouldn't support it.

I don't like page 3, but I can't say I've ever worried about the effect of it on my children. They aren't exposed to it.
