To stop random strangers on the street and ask them if they like their buggies?

I have never minded when people did it to me but today I wondered whether it is a bit of a faux pas. However, I did learn today that the person I spoke with lives their Bugaboo Donkey (I am now looking for a double buggy) but it is still quite heavy to push with two kids in.

I liked my Maclaren.

I've never met anyone with a Maclaren who doesn't like it.

jeee · 03/03/2013 15:42

I'd be quite flattered - but then most of my buggies were second-hand charity shop numbers so it didn't happen!

As long as you don't follow them down the street to continue the conversation as they run away from you, I think that it's perfectly acceptable.

TotallyEggFlipped · 03/03/2013 15:42

YANBU.
I wouldn't mind at all.
DH stopped a random couple to ask about their buggy when I was pregnant with DD. Unfortunately he started by saying 'we're expecting a baby' then realised he was with my brother and had to explain he was expecting a baby with me, not my brother. Anyway, the couple didn't mind and raved about their Quinny Buzz. So we got one. And I hate it.

Peevish · 03/03/2013 15:46

Wouldn't mind at all. I once had a builder jump down from some scaffolding to ask about my Bugaboo Bee.

AMumInScotland · 03/03/2013 15:47

I think if you have a bump or a baby with you, most people will not be fazed. They will know how much thinking and planning they had to put into their own choice, after all.

Lol at being asked by two men who are "expecting" though, I think I'd have been at last a little startled...

thezebrawearspurple · 03/03/2013 15:47

Wouldn't bother me at all. Never thought of doing that, sounds like a great idea!

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 03/03/2013 15:48

I had a tandem one and loved it. I originally bought a Phil and Teds but it was so awkward and heavy and a pain that I sold it and bought the tandem.

showtunesgirl · 03/03/2013 15:49

I did this when I was pregnant and got a good overview of what worked in my area. Where I live there are A LOT of Bugaboo Bees about and for good reason as there are a million steps at our train station and it's light enough to nip up and down stairs with it. So that's what I got as well!

Crawling · 03/03/2013 15:50

I get quite alot of comments on my pram mostly because it looks like a single but is a double. I dont mind I love my double its a britax b dual.

EarnestDullard · 03/03/2013 15:54

I was all excited about buying a Baby Jogger City Select when DD2 came along, but it's so huge that I've only used it as a double about 3 times, and even using it as a single I feel self-conscious about the size of it. I guess all doubles will be big though, they have to be to hold 2 DCs!

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 03/03/2013 15:59

Just checked an old picture and it was a graco tandem. I know graco isn't the snazziest of brands but it fitted a car seat and would fold one handed and could be pushed one handed.

xigris · 03/03/2013 16:06

No not at all! I think that most people would rather like to be asked. When preg with DS3 I spend ages chatting to a lovely lady in Tesco about the sling she had her tiny baby in. We knew we needed one, mainly to reduce the mauling loving he was likely to get from his 3 year old brother. She was more than happy to advise and we ended up buying the exact same sling. You can read all the on line reviews in the world but nothing really takes the place of actually seeing it in action and hearing what the parents think.

ThePskettiIncident · 03/03/2013 16:17

I've been asked twice, including today, by a bloke who eying up the coil suspension on my outnabout nipper. I'm flattered and happy to say I love my buggy!

I've had a few and this is the best one by miles. It's nice to be asked.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 03/03/2013 16:19

Crawling I get the same comments! I take far to much delight in showing them how the seats turn and the bottom lies flat :o I love it!

Moominsarescary · 03/03/2013 16:23

I've been asked about mine, it doesn't bother me. Like crawling I've got the b dual

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/03/2013 16:32

I do this all the time. Well, no so much now but with dd1 I went from pathologically shy to stopping random strangers to talk about their pushchairs. No one ever minded, they were happy to chat and so am I when I'm asked.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 03/03/2013 16:38

I had one of the earliest Phil & Teds, when there were a bunch in Nappy Valley but none anywhere else, so when we ventured into Central London people used to stop us and ask about it constantly. In the end I got so fed up with scrawling the supplier's details on the back of a reciept with a lipsticj that I printed out some of the key facts and kept copies in the bag.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 03/03/2013 16:39

.....but I never minded, it was nice to chat.

misdee · 03/03/2013 16:41

i stop people with tandem doubles all the time. i recently stopped someone who was pushing the oyster max as i really like the look of it, but unsure if it will live upto the hype. she really liked it. i am still unsure.

and yet i'm still pushing my old MB terrain lol as i cant decide what to get. it doesnt fit in teh house, so the babies are sleeping outside every afternoon Grin

Mrsmarblemouth · 03/03/2013 16:46

I dead chuffed when I'm asked anything about my baby or baby ephemera. It makes me think that some one must think I look like I know what I'm doing ... My extensive and exhaustive research consisted of copying what every one else had.
(I have a bugaboo bee+ and my friend has a Bugaboo Donkey for her two under 2 yrs)

Meglet · 03/03/2013 16:48

Yanbu. I've asked someone about their buggy and another person grilled me on mine.

One lady let me push her double along the sainsburys aisle to check the steering and pushability.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 03/03/2013 16:54

I had someone stop and ask me about my Bugaboo Bee. I didn't mind at all as its such a great pram!

RedRidingChops · 03/03/2013 17:20

I got stopped by someone to ask about the doubel Mountain buggy I was using- I said I love it, I'm a nanny not a parent so I've used loads. Maclarens still my fave for single buggies though! Anyway I was really happy she stopped me as we got chatting about nannying etc and now she occasionally uses me for babysitting, so worked out well!

RedRidingChops · 03/03/2013 17:22

Oh actually thinking about it, someone else asked me about a Bugaboo I was using with another family, I said it's ok but it was a bit awkward because I really don't like it! Not sure what model it is but I know I'll never buy one!

MurderOfProse · 03/03/2013 17:50

I bought a Joovy Caboose Ultralight www.mumsnet.com/reviews/pushchairs/double-buggies/9361-joovy-caboose-ultralight back in 2010 when we were on a visit to the US. At the time no pushchairs over here had anything similar - basically it has a regular seat at the front, and a "bench" thing to perch on or stand on for a toddler on the back. There were one or two UK shops that sold it, and that was it - I have no idea if that has changed.

It was ridiculously useful unless you do a lot of wandering on public footpaths then the whole thing is too flimsy and very unique so of course every time we went out, I'd be answering questions. I was always happy to chat about it, but I did find people would be chasing us down the road when we were in a hurry so I was a little more abrupt then!

More recently I've used ye olde Phil & Teds Sport double and probably only been asked about that once or twice, and never about our Maclaren. I'm guessing because they're so common everyone has already asked everybody about them!

I've asked somebody once waaaay back before we had DC1, but only because it was convenient to start a conversation, I'd never feel comfortable just stopping someone in the street. But as mentioned I never cared if anyone did it to me.
