I love Scotland. It's a beautiful country. Bit cold, but you can't have it all!
However, we have 3 dc's.
The way things are now, it will cost them all about 30k in student debt each to get a degree. So 90k for the three of them.
Neither of our parents helped us with the cost of our degrees and it made life very tricky in our younger days.
We'd love to help our dc's towards the cost of uni.
The eldest two are very academic and already talking about what they want to do at Uni, so I think it's pretty safe to assume they're going down that route.
We could get a bigger house for the same money up there. Would want to be about half an hour or so from Edinburgh.
Has anyone else thought of doing this?
Any thoughts?
It also occurs to me that we could move and then Scotland decides to introduce fees!

Definitely not here. Maybe in the middle of Glasgow or something but not once you start heading out.

And I wouldn't say it's worse than cities in England.

I grew up in shortbread land and it really was a bit twee. Wee al wifies and cups of tea in cafes at every available opportunity.

When I moved to Glasgow, it was a culture shock.

"But Billy, how for have those young men got their tracksuits tucked into their socks? And why are they shouting obscenities at me? I only came oot for a wee cuppie tea."

It always amazes me to read that the stereotypes of Scotland/living in Scotland are still so rife!

It really ain't much different to living in England, yunno!

Apart from MechanicalTheatre's aforementioned young men with tucked in tracksuits! Do you get them in England? Wink

I've never thought of Glasgow as peaceful!

I'd move for the easy accessibility of Irn Bru, luscious tablet, friendly banter, the spine tingling military tattoo and then the free Uni places.Grin

If Scotland goes independent we are moving there. Only way to avoid a lifetime of fucking bastard Tories.

Born and raised in Scotland, never going back. OP, you should move somewhere because you really want to, not just because of university fees.

kinky, I know, people act like it's going to be different somehow. I mean, it's the same country...for now.

I think you get tucked in tracksuits in the north of England (specifically in Liverpool and Newcastle), never seen it anywhere else and nowhere is it as rife as in Glasgow. You certainly don't get it in NE Scotland. Why, we're simply a little classier than the so-called central belt.

You do get a lot of students in England wearing tracky bottoms though, which I find a bit odd, as we would never have worn such a thing in public.

Yes scottish, those ones make me laugh.

We'll move to Orkney and it'll be a great hoot and the children will just love it.

The children will hate it and end up binge drinking before their 13th birthday, guaranteed.

To put it into perspective I live in the same village as the last 2 houses euphima linked to, I paid 120k for 2 bed semi. It's not always about being that expensive. Edinburgh is surrounded by affordable towns.

Aye,but neds wi manky trackies tuked into socks and plooks it's quite a look
It's quite an idiosyncratic Scotland thing (lanarkshire and the weeg)
but then again there's white puddin, chips curry sauce.ginger.

To be fair I think pl has changed recently. recently that's the thing with this area (east lothian) with only 6 high schools in the whole county covering all the town's and villages and pretty much every town and village being a huge mix of council, council bought and private it's a great mix. Your house could cost 1m or 80k and you're kids are at the sake school and playing together.

Where I live in Edinburgh is lovely, no neds and no arrogant wankers either. The numerous (non-ceramists) English seem to be coping with the incessant onslaught of anti-English slander. Edinburgh seems to be full of English people who went to uni here and never left.

I'm not planning on moving anywhere but am also not banking on the "no fees" situation continuing for much longer, that is what the CTF will go on unless the DCs blow it on booze and clubbing before then
