ps. i love AIBU. its entertaining, makes you think and is fast moving.

Kytti · 03/03/2013 08:22

YABVVU!!!!

Where else can we go and snigger?

:)

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 08:25

Yanbu, it's shoite. It's completely changed the character of the place imho. I remember when I joined over 6 years ago and it was so different.

I am almost ashamed to admit I use MN now, it's become mainstream, and mediacentric, and huge and most importantly has AIBU which has pretty much taken over in many ways.

the effect filters through to all the other boards. I wish it had never happened but then you can't freeze time or websites. It's moved on, like Glastonbury...I'd never go there any more.

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 08:26

what I mean is I think that it's turned MN into a caricature of itself. And not in a good way.

Pagwatch · 03/03/2013 08:32

Bit of both really.
Aibu can be entertaining but the combative tone does filter into other sections.
And it may not be responsible for attracting thick posters but it certainly provides them with a place to roam and play.
But it's popular and it is the main thrust of active convos half the time.

FloatyBeatie · 03/03/2013 08:43

I have never really understood the huge gulf lots of MNers see between AIBU and other topics. Perhaps because I only browse by Active Convo I don't really notice what topic something is in and I've never found that a particularly harsh tone makes the AIBU topic posts immediately recognisable as such.

I think simple aging plus the obsession with courting the media is what accounts for MN's evolution -- plus the success of the company in doing what it was set up for, namely attracting advertising. The highly commercial feel of the board, with all its sponsored discussion and with all the HQ attempts to generate content that is publicity-friendly and well suited to hosting ads, dictates the tone . The dynamic has to be one of reaching out to more and more of a mass audience, so whatever was distinctive about its early ethos is bound to be lost.

It strikes as a woman's mag these days -- the Take A Break of online chat. I guess that women's mags are dying like other part of the print media, and the advertising that they are losing is up for grabs, so it is a natural evolution for a woman's site.

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 08:46

I think you make some good points Floaty but Take a Break? Oh God Sad surely it isn't that lowbrow.

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 08:47

what about 'Woman and home'? Grin

You are right: Perhaps not Take a Break. My grasp of women's mags is poor and there is probably a better one to compare with MN -- I only look at them in dentists' waiting rooms and suchlike. If the whole of life didn't sometimes have the quality of a dentist's waiting room I probably wouldn't ever look at MN anymore.Grin

Pagwatch · 03/03/2013 09:05

Jesus Christ - take a break?

I agree floaty - except that it is a bit sad that aibu doesn't stand out in tone on active convos. It sort of ought to IMO.

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 09:14

It stands out to me due tot he dubious grammar in most titles.

'AIBU? that'...basically anything

amillionyears · 03/03/2013 09:24

The unwary need to post in chat instead.
First time posters sometimes post in AIBU.

FloatyBeatie · 03/03/2013 10:08

It's probably about three different magazines rolled into one -- Take a Break, and Spare Rib, and Lovely Nice Interiors. Let's call it "Break a Lovely Nice Rib".

littlewhitebag · 03/03/2013 10:10

I keep reading the title of this and thinking it says

to think aibu has killed men

I do a double take every time.

ouryve · 03/03/2013 10:13

YABU

There's plenty more mumsnet, with loads happening.

EuroShaggleton · 03/03/2013 12:29

YABU. The rest of MN can be a bit too nice and rather bland. I like coming on AIBU and watching people get a bit shouty. If you don't like it, stick to the nice/bland bits.

Trills · 03/03/2013 12:34

MN is clearly not dead, so YABU as MN has not been killed (past tense).

AIBU may be killing MN, but if so it's taking its time about it, AIBU has been around for years.

germyrabbit · 03/03/2013 12:35

i was a bit pished when i started this Wink

Neighbourhoodwatchbitch · 03/03/2013 16:39

You are def bu. I love AIBU !!!

lainiekazan · 06/03/2013 11:17

I dislike the way that people think that their post will only be seen if they post in AIBU. So you get threads like AIBU "to wonder what to have for dinner tonight?" Or general observations, e.g. AIBU "to think my baby is cute" and so on.

I think a moderator should mercilessly hook these out and disperse into the appropriate sections and a zero tolerance strategy to "traffic seeking" posters be implemented. So there!
