Suspect I may be being a bit childish. How would you feel?

It's my birthday soon and it DP's just emailed me to say he's been invited to a schmoozy work dinner on the evening of my birthday. He asked how I'd feel about him going and me babysitting DSD.

We have plans to celebrate my birthday with friends at the weekend but I'd hoped we could have a nice evening on the night of my actual birthday with DSD.

So I replied and said if he's going to blow out my birthday for a work thing I'd rather not babysit DSD so I have the option of at least having a drink with friends that eve.

So he said he'd decline the dinner and just go to the conference during the day.

Was I BU?

I know it's silly to get bothered about an adult birthday but mine always falls near mothers' day and mum died not long ago so I always try to distract myself from feeling shit.

I don't think anyone's criticised the OP for wanting to celebrate her birthday have they Inertia? She is already having a meal out with her DP on the weekend, and some have suggested that she could do the 'quiet night in' thing on the following day. Presumably her DP can only celebrate the end of the conference at the end of the conference?

Anyway, he asked, she said no, he is (with good grace) not going, so it's all worked out for the best.

I would have expected my dh to say an automatic no to the work thing, not put the responsibility for that onto me.

I think he's taking the piss asking you to babysit his child on your birthday, so that he can go out. Well done for saying no and not rolling over and doing it.

I'm not sure I agree with everyone else here: it always helps yr career to attend evening schmoozing, (sadly). And you are celebrating yr birthday, at the weekend following. And your DSD lives with you a lot of the time, so this is her home to, and she is family. Personally I'd babysit on the "you owe me one" basis.
