to want my husband to understand the purpose of curtains?

Honestly am I the only one? He just doesn't get that you open them in the morning and close them in the evening. He would happily leave them open for days, probably even weeks, on end and not even notice.

I have come home on a sunny, early afternoon and he has the curtains closed but the light on so that he can see. Likewise I come in of a late evening and he has the curtains wide open but is sitting on the far end of the sofa in his dressing gown as he doesn't want people to see in.

I realise there is no point to my post but I just wanted to see if anyone else has the same?!

I just don't get how he doesn't realise, he is a very intelligent scientist nerd who reads physics books for pleasure he does have a brain!

Yep, mine. Not as bad though, it will occur to him to close them when it gets dark and people start looking in as they pass by... But not before muttering expletives about the nosey gits and doing 'want a cup of tea?" Hand gestures to them, mortifying. But he will never think to open them. Ever.

NormanTheForeman · 26/02/2013 09:12

Mine is like this too. If I go out in the evening I come home to find all the lights on and the curtains open, it's like being in a bloody goldfish bowl! But often in the mornings he doesn't open the curtains when he gets up (after me). Sometimes I don't go upstairs for hours and find they have been closed half the day. The neighbours must see him going out and think I have spent half the day in bed!

Patchouli · 26/02/2013 09:12

haha
Sounds like he sees them as twigs n pebbles n shit.
Like scatter cushions.

Bejeena · 26/02/2013 09:32

Don't get me started on wanting him to understand the purpose of light bulbs!

Actually Patchouli I was gobsmacked about a year ago when he said we actually needed scatter cushions on the sofa. I was worried for about a week after that!

i never close my curtains!they are there to look pretty! :-)

Trazzletoes · 26/02/2013 09:36

bejeena my DH is EXACTLY like this

Startail · 26/02/2013 09:37

DH understands curtains, the DDs don't.
Non of them understand the purpose of light bulbs, I think they feel furniture is afraid of the dark.

AmandinePoulain · 26/02/2013 09:40

I may be outing myself by writing this as I've posted about it on fb and surely my dad is the only person in the world who is odd enough to do this...but he opens the curtains before going to bed so that he doesn't have to do it in the morning Hmm Grin

pippop1 · 26/02/2013 09:44

Automatic curtains with a timer that you can program are the answer. His physics brain will find that great.

I know these things exist but I expect they are not cheap.

MyDarlingClementine · 26/02/2013 09:46

Same here, never closes or opens curtains, and if I ask him to close them for safety so people cant see in, he doesnt underdstand that they need to be drawn until they meet in the middle.

Therefore drawn half way only, with a large gap in the middle, which people can see in Confused

CharltonHairstyle · 26/02/2013 10:02

Mine doesn't understand amy sort of window dressing.

It's like he puts on some sort of show for anyone who walks past - all of the lights on and all of the blinds/ curtains open...oh, usually has the winded open and heating on too. Sigh

Buzzardbird · 26/02/2013 10:24

My DH wakes up every morning and as his side of the bed is next to the window he opens one curtain. Just one so that anyone passing our house thinks we are bloody students or something.

When he goes to bed he pulls them together in the middle leaving about eight inches gap at either end of the curtains...again looking like students actually live in our house.

He doesn't seem to have curtain knowledge either.

FastidiaBlueberry · 26/02/2013 10:26

I just clicked in here to see if I've understood correctly what the purpose of curtains is.

arggh arggh arghh. My DD who is home from Uni does this too. It drives me mental. I wake up after a night shift to find the fire still on which she hasn't turned off before going to work. Curtains shut and lights on in the living room. and usually a few other assorted lights on around the house, depending on what rooms she's been in.
Tears hair out in frustration

MiniTheMinx · 26/02/2013 10:58

We never pull ours, I like waking up to natural light. Damn those winter school mornings though.

wimblehorse · 26/02/2013 11:06

AmandinePoulain my in-laws do this too. Are you my SIL?

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 26/02/2013 11:17

Amandine - my Dad used to do the same!

pootlebug · 26/02/2013 11:20

I feel your pain. It's just the same in our house.

GinAndSlimlinePlease · 26/02/2013 11:24

But think how much pleasure your husbands are giving to nosy neighbours! I love snooping into other homes Grin

SneakyNinja · 26/02/2013 11:31

Oh God yes! Why people wish to draw the curtains and sit with the light on whilst it's still light outside is beyond me! Well, apart from obvious reasons Wink

digerd · 26/02/2013 11:33

I used to pull up the blind before going to bed in the spring as the sun came in that room and warmed it up to save on the heating. But as the trees opposite have grown , I have recently had no sun until 8.30am< grizzle face>
Also in the room with patio doors and alluminium frames gets condensation on a cold night in winter, I used to open the curtains before going to bed and it stopped.
Can't be bothered anymore and the police say to draw your curtains so burglars can't see what you have. Still haven't opened the drawn curtains in other rooms. But sitting room blind is pulled up when it is light .

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/02/2013 11:43

We don't have curtains Grin

We have blinds on the bedroom windows and the only other window which faces the street is the kitchen window. Since I rarely prance around naked in there, I'm not bothered if people look in Smile We do have a blind in the living room (French doors) but it is only ever used when people stay over in there so they are not blinded by the sun when they wake up Grin

FryOneFatManic · 26/02/2013 12:16

I have blinds and curtains for the bedroom window. And it's still not dark enough for me to sleep, even though our street lights get switched off from 12am to 5:30 am. We still get glow from lights in nearby street, neighbours work at night so their door light is on, etc.

However, DP does understand curtains and will close them/open them at appropriate times.

notsofrownieface · 26/02/2013 12:21

It doesn't make sense. The only time having your curtains closed during the day is acceptable is in the height of summer in a room that gets direct sunlight as it does help to keep the room cooler.

GlitterySkulls · 26/02/2013 12:23

i very rarely even open my curtains, don't like nosey folk looking in.

it has to be boiling hot (extremely rare in scotland!!) before i do, and even then i shut them before i go out.
