To expect better of Waitrose and think this is not on!

I'm shocked and saddened by this. Really shocked. I would expect it from Tesco but not waitrose in a million years.

I bought a 500g bag of pasta the other week and just used it for a recipe. Weighed out 400g and thought no way is there 100g left. There was only 75g left!

I've been done out of 25g of pasta. It's is like the mixed peppers all over again!

I have gone off their own-brand penne of late. Takes 3 mins longer to cook than it used to (not necessarily a mark of inferior quality in itself, I appreciate), seems a bit stodgier than before and latest pack contained random bits of fusilli or similar.

PeachActiviaMinge · 24/02/2013 17:33

I did the shopping in Tesco today and as a reward I brought a pack of chocolate donuts which clearly say "5 chocolate donuts" on the packaging but contain 6.

Proves which is truly the superior supermarket if you ask me. Wink

I had nine bacon rashers in a pack of eight recently, think that was from tesco.

On a slightly more serious note, I have found this with several products from different supermarkets recently.

Can I suggest that over the next couple of weeks, people weigh a selection of items and see if they are under the weight on the packaging?

I have found a shortfall of between 50 and 100g on everyday products such as breakfast cereal, butter, pasta, bacon. Yesterday, a 500g net wt box of sainsburys cereal weighed 400g on my kitchen scales (which are newish, not cheap and usually reliable).

I think we are being conned on a massive scale (sorry, pun not intended), but because few people have kitchen scales these days it goes unnoticed.

It would be interesting to get feedback from mumsnetters on this.

Disgusting. YANBU. M&S only for me now.

Sue them.

PrincessOfChina · 24/02/2013 17:36

I just weighed the two packs of Waitrose pasta in my cupboard and they're 511g and 509g. Would you like me to send you the excess? Perhaps I got some of yours? Grin

Lilymaid · 24/02/2013 17:42

I could coordinate a register of over and under filling of packets so that those with more could give to those with less. Of course, in the case of Waitrose produce, I would not expect that any shortfall should be made up with Asda or Tesco produce.

greatauntbulgaria · 24/02/2013 17:46

A timely thread as I was just baking with Tesco organic butter bought on a rare trip there ... It turned out that the pack advertising itself as 250g contained 206g! Swindled!

3littlefrogs · 24/02/2013 17:51

The thing is - food is expensive enough without paying for more than you are actually getting.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/02/2013 17:55

I'm going to be obsessively weighing everything now.

HenD19 · 24/02/2013 17:58

Were the extra bacon rashers actually horse ones though?

lastSplash · 24/02/2013 18:01

3littlefrogs - you could weigh things in the shop in the veg section - maybe a bit less mad than taking stuff home, getting annoyed, possibly taking things back to shop...

VivaLeBeaver · 24/02/2013 18:08

They probably were horse rashers but I'm not fussy about that sort of thing. Grin

Genius idea about taking everything to the veg section before buying it.

Hmm..I think we need some more information here. this says that between 500g and 1000g in weight, a package with the 'e' mark on it can be -15g.

Soo...your pasta could have been 485g and it would be legal.

Now...if your scales were inaccurate by 5g either way...then you could actually have weighed 405g out of the packet, and have 80g left, which would be fine.

You don't happen to have any unopened packages of food do you? Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 24/02/2013 18:17

Will it be obvious on the packaging if it has the e mark?

I think this is what the non emergency police number is for, you have been robbed!
Who could play you in the Crimewatch reconstruction?

VivaLeBeaver · 24/02/2013 18:19

Drew Barrymore without a doubt. I'm frequently used to be told I look like her.

Trading standards would have them for this to be sure. Unfortunately I've cooked and now eaten half of the evidence. [daily mail sad face]

I'd definitely complain about it....

A friend of mine once bought a £1 pizza from Iceland, which we decided to cook when drunk. Instead of the large pieces of meat on the packaging there were a couple of TINY pieces on the pizza....

In our amazingly youthful drunkenness we composed an outraged letter and returned it to Iceland the next day along with the pizza. She got a letter of apology and a £20 voucher Grin

Lavenderhoney · 24/02/2013 18:29

It occurred to me today whilst gazing at raw meat deciding what to buy, that the nz lamb looked just the same in packet as normal lamb, only it was much more expensive. And in a lovely packet thing.

Do you think it's all bought cheaply then just vacuum packed and stickered?
I'm going to weigh my pasta in the shop now. They have scales at the veg section:)

They will save a fortune taking out a slice of bacon or a 100g of pasta, and there is a big enough mark up as it is.

zimmyzammyzoom · 24/02/2013 18:30

The e will be just next to the weight on the pack. I'm sure it'll be there. Average weight legislation applies to most food products. At least there's no horse in it Wink
