to tell my husband he should have kicked this dog?

Genuinely would like to know if AIBU and if so, what should I tell him to do if it happens again?

He walked down the supermarket this morning taking our little Westie with him. On his way back a much bigger dog was coming towards him with a couple. This dog was not on a lead, despite being on the pavement next to the main road. It suddenly charged at our little Westie and attacked him for no reason. My husband tried to get it off him and get our dog away but this other dog just kept attacking. Meanwhile the owners kept calling it back to them, which it ignored, but otherwise made no attempt to get control of their fucking dog.

In the end my huband managed to get little Westie free and lifted him up high, which I suspect is not a wise move as the bastard then tried to get little dog off him. But husband is tall and strong and little Westie was well out its jumping range. Then the owners then got hold of their dog, finally, said sorry and then fucked off without leaving any contact details.

Poor little Westie baby has a bloody great big hole in his neck, is clearly traumatised, as is my husband. And we're going to have to pay the emergency out of hours vet bill. Angry

Maybe I should tell my husband to kick the owners instead?

Kicking the owners sounds like a better plan. Fucking idiots. I hope your dog is ok?

thenightsky · 23/02/2013 11:06

I think in the panic of the moment I would have kicked out, yes. But we all react differently to sudden situations like this.

YouTheCat · 23/02/2013 11:08

Kick owners.

They are breaking the law for a start. Dangerous dogs Act states that dogs must be under control and this one was not.

CloudsAndTrees · 23/02/2013 11:09

This happened when I was out with my little dog once. I kicked the other dog to get him away, and thankfully the owners were nice and very apologetic. I'd have no hesitation in doing the same again.

I hope you are all ok. I was really shaken up when it happens to us, it was horrible. Your poor dog! Sad

LadyBeagleEyes · 23/02/2013 11:12

Aw, your poor little westie.
I'd have probably kicked the dog to get it away.
I hope he's ok. Has he been to the vet yet?

saintmerryweather · 23/02/2013 11:13

i would have kicked the fucker to get it off my dog. copy their attitude: its not my dog, why should i care if it gets hurt

FutTheShuckUp · 23/02/2013 11:14

Call the police. Stupid cunts.
At the park yesterday a dog came bounding up to my son and jumped up his back, scratching him where his jumper had rode up slightly. The owner is all 'oh she gets easily excited she just wants to play' well not everyone wants your fuckwit of an animal jumping all over them and scratching them. Keep them on a fucking lead if they cant be trusted not to run at people or other dogs

LibertineLover · 23/02/2013 11:17

Yes, I would have kicked it, but like pp said, in the moment, you don't think of everything, I'd seriously consider reporting it though (not sure who to) but this could have happened before. (twats)

BinarySolo · 23/02/2013 11:21

I'd have kicked it I think. Having seen my own dog attacked and picked up the bill I'd have asked for the owners details too. That's from experience though as when a large terrier took a chunk out of my springer I didn't. Only realised the damage when I got home.

Don't know if it's worth contacting police or dog warden if you can give a good description. They sound like irresponsible owners so they may be 'known' already.

TidyDancer · 23/02/2013 11:22

This is not a police matter, it is for your local animal warden. Report it to them in case they have other reports that match. It's on the record then.

And no, YANBU.

BinarySolo · 23/02/2013 11:26

I've also grabbed an Alsatian by the collar to drag it off my dog whilst screaming at its owner. On reflection not the brightest of things to do as I could have been attacked.

My eldest springer is very submissive which seems to make her a target. Was so proud a couple of weeks ago when she put a jack Russell in its place when it attacked her.

WestieMamma · 23/02/2013 11:28

My husband is on the phone to the police at the moment. The vets is normally closed today but he's coming out but can't get there until 2.00, so he'll see him then.

We're not in the UK and my daughter just reminded me that all dogs and their descriptions are registered with the council, so there is a chance that the owners can be traced as it's a pretty small town.

Another vote for kicking the owners I'd have gone apeshit!

FannyFifer · 23/02/2013 11:28

Absolutely he should have kicked the dog to get it off yours.
I have booted a dog when it was trying to attack my child who was in her buggy (as its owners strolled toward me not a care in the world).

I have never shouted or used the amount of bad language i did that day in my life. Angry

gillian88 · 23/02/2013 11:32

I have a yorkie and this has happened. I love in a cul de sac and most owners let their dogs out to run around the cul de sac off lead with a ball etc. I don't do this- if I took my yorkie off the lead he would run away call back isn't great but that's another thread!!! However he's been attacked by these dogs before. He's got fear aggression due to being attacked before- if a dog off lead comes running at him he will growl and bark- resulting in these dogs going for him. Sad

Before I take him a walk I need to check there's none running about outside and if there is I need to wait til they go in as I've tried holding him in my arms walking past but then they jump up on me- these are big dogs btw- bull dogs, Alsatian, and a few labs.

Then once we go for our walk I worry the whole way round incase they are out when we get back to our cul de sac!

It's a dog on dog attack, he doesn't need the police, he needs the animal warden.

LadyBeagleEyes · 23/02/2013 11:40

Op is in another country Tidy, maybe the laws are different there.

WestieMamma · 23/02/2013 11:43

To be honest, I have no idea what the laws are here really or who to report it to. I do know though that dogs are never allowed off the lead here, even when out in the countryside. Although a lot people flout this. The only time they're allowed off lead is when they're in the fenced in dog area of the park.

I hope your wee Westie is ok! Poor toot! We lost our old Westie 2 weeks ago and if a great big fucker of a dog tried to or did attack him I would do whatever I could to protect him! If that means kicking the other dog then that's fine.

Nothing irritates me more than irresponsible dog owners!

pigletmania · 23/02/2013 14:11

Yes I would have kicked the dog to get it away, than the owners. Sound awful poor little westie

BMW6 · 23/02/2013 14:42

You do whatever you can to protect your dog. My dog (Westie cross Chihuahua) was attacked by a Bull Mastiff in a park. Mine was on lead, other wasn't.....

I naturally got between them and was bitten my the masitff during the attack. Owner ran over, grabbed dog and fucked off asap. Luckily the children who were also playing in the park (yes, where this fool was letting his dog off lead) knew the dog and where owner lived, so I was straight onto Police. If dog hadn;t bitten me it would only be a civil matter.

Upshot - owner told by Police that if happens again dog will be destroyed, and if I see dog off lead & unmuzzled I am to report immedialty.

I carry a pointy stick with me now to keep attacking dogs at bay.

WestieMamma · 23/02/2013 16:11

Just got back from the vets and feeling a bit happier (because Little Westie seems to be happier). The bites on his back are all superficial, it's only the top layer of skin which is damaged. The one on his neck is quite deep but the vet says it's best to keep it open rather than stitch it up, to reduce the risk of him getting an infection. He's had antibiotics and painkillers and a box of McNuggets on the way home and looks a bit better for it. He gone to sleep now on the back of the sofa.

I am so sorry to hear that happened to your poor dog and glad he is on the mend.

I agree with the others who said its owners needed kicking!! bastards - how dare they not at least offer to pay the bloody vets bill.

To be honest though, he probably did the right thing in NOT kicking the dog as if he hurt the dog it may well have attacked him instead.

SquinkiesRule · 23/02/2013 16:15

Poor little Westie I hope he is all healed soon.
