Yesterday I quit FB. I was really, really upset, as in my news feed I was shocked to see someone had shared a vile photo of a tiny baby being strangled. I have noticed also recently other graphic images doing the rounds. Has anyone else come across such horrible things? Or do I have idiot friends?? Am I being a drama Queen?? Its a shame, I like to use FB to keep in contact with DP and share the latest news about my DS etc, I just dont want to see such upsetting things. Apologies if there are other threads in this subject.

Has anyone else quit FB for this reason??

What if my children had have seen these images accidentally??

I had that same shit on my wall, reported it to FB and was told it was inoffensive. Wankers!

maidmarian2012 · 23/02/2013 15:20

mrsjay yes I agree, especially the pics of ill children, ie, hit like if you want him/her to get better. I dont want to like anything of that ilk. I like your comment about pretend outrage.

Schnullerbacke It mystifies me what FB deem offensive and inoffensive Angry

I saw the photo you mentioned OP- people don't seem to consider that if they comment (often to to complain/state their disgust) it makes the photo appear in their friends news feed.

I have had to remove status updates from a few people who would comment on these photos but people frequently surprise me! Considering leaving facebook although I do use it for a couple of groups so I'm unsure.

Here's an article about what happened after that photo of the baby being abused was circulated. Apparently he's doing well & is living elsewhere, thank god

I am amazed that these images can be circulated without any sanction. Alot of it is illegal by the sounds of it. Images of child abuse are illegal definately. Surely the Police child exploitation unit should be on to it.

Gay40 · 23/02/2013 15:57

I'm on FB. I have never seen those images, nor any other that causes me concern or offence. I don't get fluffy cat pics, cancer chain letters, silly racist nonsense or other ignorant shite. Why? Firstly I don't associate with morons and secondly I am as selective on FB about who I accept as I am in RL.
The filter is your own mind. Use it.

Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 15:58

I have never ever seen stuff like that on Facebook.
I am only Facebook friends with people I like and whom I am 99% sure are not tossers. Any hint of wankiness, prurient or mawkish posting - defriend/block.

I don't know how/why people have hundreds of friends and then are shocked that people they barely know are Not Nice.

Op - block the arses. Have your best friends on FB and it becomes quite nice.

monkeysbignuts · 23/02/2013 16:00

i have seen some disgusting things on Facebook, they are absolutely dreadful at policing the website and i deleted my account.
i come across an Ian huntley fan page, i kid you not!

Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 16:02

How. How did you come across an Ian Huntley fan page?

Confused
Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 16:27

No?
I am genuinely asking how that could happen.
How does anyone come across this stuff except by having wankers as 'friends'.

NC78 · 23/02/2013 16:36

Wankers as relatives perhaps?

Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 16:54

But I mean facebook friends.

I have wankers as relatives. I don't make them Facebook friends. And if I absoloutely had too I would hide their feed.

NC78 · 23/02/2013 17:01

I have a lot of relatives feeds hidden due to wankishness.

TheBigJessie · 23/02/2013 17:02

Oh, I remember an Ian Huntley fan page, five years ago. Is it still up?! I came across it, because an fb friend had been on there arguing, and telling them that they were disgusting people. So, immediately it came up on my news feed.

leonardofquirm · 23/02/2013 17:18

I don't have any of these graphic images, my fb friends are all rl friends and my numerous cousins.

I do get the odd mindless drivel post from my youngest cousin, if it annoys me I just hide it.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 23/02/2013 17:22

None of my Facebook friends have posted anything like the things you describe.

Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 17:48

That makes sense TheBigJessie - that someone objecting to its content makes it appear on your newsfeed. Except it doesn't help me with how anyone finds these things in the first place iyswim.

I am trying to get my head around it.
It's like the people that post 'omg look at this awful site' . How do they find them?
I never see this shit.

mrsjay · 23/02/2013 17:51

It really pisses me off I always report not that many of the people on my facebook do but i sometimes see friends share and i just report it and i have been deleted by a few

monkeysbignuts · 23/02/2013 18:02

pag i used to admin a Facebook group with just over 40,000 members and we used to get spammed some horrific stuff.
i actually reported it to the police it was that disgusting

TheBigJessie · 23/02/2013 18:22

I think it's just like real life viruses. A friend of a friend's next-door's neighbour's niece's ex-boyfriend (who is a Proper Prat, but she's still fb friend's with him because otherwise he'll "kick off" and she's trying to keep it amiable because of the children) has an even more prattish cousin and he gave me his cold and he liked a page to be controversial...

I've trimmed my list down a lot, and now most of my friend's are people with small lists too, but every single person you have on there who is, erm, indiscriminate in friending, exponentially increases your risk of I-don't-want-to-see-that exposure. And the more offensive something is, the more it gets shared, because lots of people don't report silently. they post to vigourously express their feelings.

It's a bit like STIs. "I don't need to use a condom, my boyfriend has only had two other partners" sounds less safe when you consider that perhaps each of them had two partners first, who had two partners, who had two partners... And suddenly, everyone has syphilis.

TheBigJessie · 23/02/2013 18:30

Oh, and the Ian Huntley one went fecking viral, after the Sun and the Daily Mail printed articles on how disgusting it was. Then all those readers looked for it, in order to give the originators a piece of their mind...

Some people are trolls. They want to troll, they'll search for something disgusting to join. In general, we all know what is disgusting and offensive, and what to type into a search engine. It's not only trolls who search, but also people who want to be shocked, to be honest.

There's always pointless "I hate Huntley" pages (congratulations. And the point of this page is, what, exactly?), so trolls are inspired to make adulatory ones, in opposition.

Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 19:03

Well i suppose I am kind of too - except that I don't get any of it so never have to start threads complaining about all the sick threads on Facebook.

It is just a matter of curiosity really. There are weekly threads based around 'my Facebook friend is an utter cunt' and 'I saw ths awful/hideous/upsetting thing on facebook and I get perplexed as to how people get sent this stuff.

Pagwatch · 23/02/2013 19:04

Yy to people who search for it wanting to be shocked. That weirdly makes sense.
