Sick images on Facebook Recently...

Yesterday I quit FB. I was really, really upset, as in my news feed I was shocked to see someone had shared a vile photo of a tiny baby being strangled. I have noticed also recently other graphic images doing the rounds. Has anyone else come across such horrible things? Or do I have idiot friends?? Am I being a drama Queen?? Its a shame, I like to use FB to keep in contact with DP and share the latest news about my DS etc, I just dont want to see such upsetting things. Apologies if there are other threads in this subject.

Has anyone else quit FB for this reason??

What if my children had have seen these images accidentally??

*beer tricks I clearly did not say OMG strangled baby. I simply wanted to know if anyone else had seen the awful stuff recently, and was unsure whether to totally sack FB.

You are not the only one to have left FB over these horrific pictures. They have been reported and FB are refusing to take them down.... that speaks volumes for the Ethics and morality of FB:Angry

ConfusedPixie · 21/02/2013 23:24

I don't see this stuff thankfully, but then I'm really selective as to who is on my page. I have 61 FB 'friends', they are all people I know or relatives. I have to relatives who post spammy things but never to this calibre thank fuck. They'd be deleted if they did! I don't get why you'd have somebody on there who did post that kind of thing!

countrykitten · 21/02/2013 23:25

Just get off FB - your life will be sweeter for it. There are emails and telephones to keep in touch with your real friends.

FloatyFlo · 21/02/2013 23:29

Beertricks. I'm not sure you see where we are coming from.

It doesn't depend on who your friends are. Like I said, my auntie being one who re-posts things you wouldn't necessarily want to be exposed to. Doesn't mean she's sick, or horrible. She was no doubt shocked and felt the need to pass it on. Naive enough to think that it really will help end child abuse. Of course its not why that particular image was first posted onto Facebook.

And yes its all very well hiding posts, but you can't hide a frightening image in your mind once you've seen it

The short term solution for oneself, is to quit Facebook. Which myself and op have now done.

Facebook is what people make it, correct, but not always what you yourself have made it.

FloatyFlo · 21/02/2013 23:33

These images aren't things any of our friends lists have posted, but things spread all over Facebook so quickly. Everytime one person views/likes/conments on something, every friend, ir friend of a friend, will have it pop up in there newsfeed.

FloatyFlo · 21/02/2013 23:34

That should say, these things aren't necessarily

KobayashiMaru · 22/02/2013 00:13

I don't see any of those things, but then I choose my friends carefully. And know that content is due to the people and not the medium. Hmm

KobayashiMaru · 22/02/2013 00:13

Not if you're doing it right, Flo. Set your privacy better.

chickensarmpit · 22/02/2013 00:15

I heard about a girl sucking her own tampon and another being vile towards a dog. I deleted facebook after i seen pictures of a baby being stood on.

KobayashiMaru · 22/02/2013 00:18

Thanks for sharing. Not. Hmm

ConfusedPixie · 22/02/2013 00:31

"Naive enough to think that it really will help end child abuse."

Out of curiosity, do you tell her that it actually won't? I've had that conversation with my cousin who genuinely thought reposting the cancer statuses would give x amount of money to charity, he was amazed that FB didn't do that and now he doesn't repost those statuses only inane 'funny' videos

yaimee · 22/02/2013 00:43

I read this, flicked over to Facebook and the very first image on my newsfeed was of a man punching a dog.
The problem is that now you are shown if your friends like or comment on an image, so they don't have to actively share something foe it to show up on your feed.
A few weeks ago an illegal and extreme pornographic video involving an animal appeared on my feed after a friend has commented on it (obviously expressing her disgust) but her comment and the hundreds of other similar comments below had just ensured that the video had reached a far wider audience, i didn't press play, and I'm sure most others didn't either, bit you could see what was contained from the still.
Facebook removed it sharpish, i reported as did many others.
It raises an interesting legal question though, i might be mistaken about this, but as i understand it, those who had inadvertantly shared the video by commenting on it could technically be arrested for distributing illegal pornography!

maidmarian2012 · 22/02/2013 14:42

Im reading this thread with great interest!! I have decided im definitely quitting fb for good. And as another contributor said, my life will be all the richer for it. I have been off it for 2 days now, and dont miss it at all.

Thank God I have not seen the animal pornography, I wont do now Iv quit Smile

I haven't seen any of these images on my FB. None of my friends would post them.Maybe you need to be more choosy about who you friend on FB.

SassySpice · 22/02/2013 17:44

I deleted my own mother as she kept posting pictures of dogs being tortured.

HeadfirstForHalos · 22/02/2013 18:37

Usual, some of my friends campaign for animal rights, they thought that by sharing the dog torture pictures they were raising awareness. IMO you can raise awareness without that kind of shit. I don't have twats on my FB, just a few occasional idiots Grin

Purple2012 · 22/02/2013 18:51

I don't have this problem as I only have actual real life friends on mine. I deleted anyone I don't see/speak to in real life.

somewhereaclockisticking · 22/02/2013 18:52

You should have immediately reported the picture and then sent a message to the person who shared it with you and unfriended them - reported them as well. You don't have to quit FB because of it. It's your choice of friends that has caused you the upset. Get rid of them straight away - and in real life because if they've choosent to share such images with you then they're not really very nice people at all - unless the reason they shared was to highlight the fact that these pictures were on fb and want a certain page shut down. I opened up my fb recently to find a picture on my newsfeed with 2 men standing naked with towels resting across their errect penises - imagine if one of my kids had seen that.

maidmarian2012 · 23/02/2013 11:14

Thank everyone. usualsuspects You are dead right. DP and I went throuh my FB list last night and deleted anyone who has shown a hint of dickhed-ness. Now I only have people who I either went to school with, family, or people I actually know in real life.

So far, no more silly disturbing

I had a shock though as a (decent hardworking not an idiot) friend has shared our local newspapers item on a person on our estate who has just been convicted of grooming teenage girls and meeting up with them on FB. Even taking a 14 year old girl for her tongue piercing!! Good God, DP and I went to school with this person!! I had no idea! Goes to show what goes on on FB though doesnt it?

I would ban my daughter (if I had one) from FB. My DS1 is 13 and keeps wanting to join but im not having it. Angry

Sallystyle · 23/02/2013 11:34

I do get sick of the graphic images on FB. I don't have many friends who post that stuff, just two very young siblings who think they are raising awareness when they post that stuff. They are just young kids so I give them more of a pass.

I don't want to delete or hide them so I just quickly scroll past and then block the post. It is annoying
