Hey singapore! You my much much younger sister - great name, altho im biased! Am also amazed at how undervalued some jobs are in salary terms... Always been in sales (business systems/property - all sorts) and we earned what even we thought were disproportionately high salaries for 'just' selling.. £40k per annum+ in the early 90's plus health-ins/new car every two years/bonuses and incentives such as holidays etc - I know times have changed..it might not sound a lot these days but it WAS 25 years ago and my basic salary was £18k+....and pro-rata even 5 years ago £80+ selling property (before huge bursting of bubble!)...it seems very 'unfair' when people are risking their lives/working round the clock etc for much much less!I always out- earned the graduates/more highly qualified people I worked with but found my general business acumen/work-ethic and intellect carried me further! These days am sahm doing bits of sales-related work on ad-hoc basis... Would like to do much more for the buzz really but some of the earnings dont make it worthwhile hassle-wise !

ditziness · 20/02/2013 09:22

ha!

artist 16k scientist 112k

gah!

Shagmundfreud · 20/02/2013 09:35

Trainer - £38 per hour. Self employed. Part time.

Earn about 10K a year but don't have to work very often for that.

jamaisjedors · 20/02/2013 10:04

Teacher in Higher Education (in France), full-time.

24k (converted from euros, pre-tax).

DH is a senior lecturer/researcher and earns 34k.

I am quite shocked at how some salaries are in the UK. We feel really well off with our two salaries but maybe the cost of living is cheaper and childcare is more subsidized?

bettybyebye · 20/02/2013 11:48

Procurement manager, 6 yrs exp, mcips qualified, £44k for 37hr week. Fair amount of flexibility and opportunity to work from home

MushroomSoup · 20/02/2013 13:35

Primary head teacher. £58K before tax. Long hours and a ridiculous (and growing!) list of responsibilities. But many many more rewards, because your children are FABULOUS! I love my job.

FadBook · 20/02/2013 13:52

Mushroom - my DP is a Deputy Head. He's always said he couldn't and wouldn't do your job given the huge growing list of responsibilities, for not much more pay than what he's on now. But like you, he absolutely loves his job and the children in the school. It is very rewarding and I miss that part of my role!

Oblomov · 20/02/2013 14:30

I do accounts and only earn 14k for 3 days school hours.
This thread has confirmed what I already knew, that I'm in the wrong job.

stickingattwo · 20/02/2013 14:39

Marketing 95k incl bonus.

renaldo · 20/02/2013 21:07

DH earns 100k plus as a doctor but crazy hours and responsibility in high risk speciality . Loves it though.
Me 46k 75% of 46k as AHP band 8a NHS researcher -

trixymalixy · 20/02/2013 21:55

The salaries that surprise me in here are the marketing salaries. It's not an area I would have considered to be as well paid. What sort of qualifications do you need? Is it quite sales based or more creative?

sausagesandwich34 · 20/02/2013 22:10

my brother works in marketing and has a BA in business and marketing

don't think he earns 90k though -he certainly doesn't live the lifestyle

although there only seems to be me willing to discuss it lol

Auntmaud · 20/02/2013 22:16

DH company director £150 K plus.

tak1ngchances · 20/02/2013 22:17

I am the Marketing 72k person. I dd quite a generic degree and then joined a massive company on their graduate training programme. That was almost 9 years ago. Now I am a global brand manager.
You need commercial awareness, good creative judgement (not the same as creativity), an interest in what makes people tick, excellent communication skills, and to be highly organised.

suburbophobe · 20/02/2013 22:25

Couple of hundred a year?

Honestly, haven't a clue...

VivaLeBeaver · 20/02/2013 22:29

I'm a midwife. Full time salary is 29k but I'm pro rata as 4 days a week.

BlueMoon74 · 20/02/2013 22:29

Only had a quick flick and just want to say can't believe how much teacher bashing is going on! Being a teacher is my second career. First career, retail, paid £46k plus perks for 50+hrs a week, weekends, late nights etc.

I'm now earning £23k. Still do late nights and weekends! The planning and marking is horrific. You really do not get 'loads' of holidays, as my friends seem to think. I can honestly say it is more work than my retail job.

For half the salary.

Do people really believe that I'm paid too much on £23k?? I think it's scandalous!

BlueMoon74 · 20/02/2013 22:31

Might just add that I love my job. The kids are fab. Grin. Teaching is definitely a vocation. I'm certainly not doing it for the money.
(But it would be nice not to be told I'm overpaid, given I have two degrees, and now a large student debt to repay from my retraining!)

worley · 20/02/2013 22:39

Sonographer 35.5k year.. full time.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/02/2013 22:50

Blue moon, I take it you're fairly newly qualified and at the bottom of your band? I'm sure my Nhs band is the same as a standard teacher pay scale and when I'm at the top of my band if I'm full time I'd earn about 35k a year.

I wouldn't say it's overpaid but nor do I think it's scandalous.

Joiningthegang · 20/02/2013 22:55

Local authority commissioner 46k

sallysparrow157 · 20/02/2013 23:09

I'm a doctor, I am a paediatrician sub specialising in paeds intensive care. I'm a registar, theoretcally a year away from being a consultant but I want a bit more training and will take much less pay to get it for a few years after I've finished my training. Currently I'm on £39k basic pay with an increment of 40% to cover the fact that I work 48 hours a week and many of those hours are overnight and over weekends - pretty much work 12 hour shifts every other weekend. I have to pay about £1200 a year just to be allowed to do my job (GMC, RCPCH and indemnity fees), I've paid a couple of grand in exam fees to be allowed to continue in my training as well as fees to attend conferences and such (at a minimun about £400 a yr)

I earn a lot of money. I'm not denying that for a minute. I also love my job and even if i won the lottery I'd still do it.

Victoria3012 · 20/02/2013 23:15

Im the manager of a London Borough for a National charity, 9-5 with 3 or 4 evening meetings per month (most are held in work hours) the evening meetings are classed as overtime so I can leave early/start late when needed £27,000pa.

Kafri · 21/02/2013 01:27

my word - im in the wrong field. could defo do with some of those salaries now I uavr LO to think of.

raisah · 21/02/2013 05:03

Jamaisjedore- thats quite low for HE teacher & researcher as you can get more here particularly in uni of London. The outgoings are horrendously expensive so will cancel any salary benefit. My childcare is £85 per day for 2 dc, travel card £200 & £900 for my mortgage monthly.
I earn £22k p/t HE administrator & I love my job so put up with the outgoings.
