to think this note from nursery was a bit OTT?

We got a letter at the beginning of term saying that on Wednesdays children will be taken to the library to choose a library book, and that they will continue to be changed every Wednesday.

So every Wednesday I've put her library book in her book bag and she has come home with another, that we usually read once or twice at the weekend.

Over this weekend, we all suffered with the novovirus and no book reading occured. I suggested to dd that perhaps we keep the book another week, but she insisted that we read this morning and change it.

It was all a rush and we didn't have time, and it appears we couldn't locate the book either, so her dad took her without the book.

This evening, I have just looked in her bag and seen a note saying 'From our records, it appears that dd has not returned x book yet. Please return TOMORROW. A charge of £5 is made for each lost book'.

Now I don't expect the school to have to lose resources to disorganised parents, and I think it is right that they are replaced. But it was TODAY, so I was a bit upset about the 'yet'.

And also the mention of money on the day it is usually changed, particularly as I didn't know it was compulsory to change the book every week anyway (it wasn't when my ds went to nursery 2 years ago - you could keep the book for weeks if the child was interested/enjoying it). And no money was mentioned in the original letter, nor the fact that they expected it to be returned each week.

I'm pretty upset by the note tbh, so WIBU to tell the nursery teacher this, or is this usual behaviour from nurseries and I'm just being a bit U in thinking they are all like my ds' was!?

I think it was the tone of the note rather than the note or the system that has upset the OP though. It would have got my back up as well.

The £5 is only if you've lost it- not for being overdue.

StarlightMcKenzie · 14/02/2013 08:42

Damn it. Can't find the book.

It's in the house, but with us all being sick the house (which is never very tidy anyway) is a tip!!

Grrrrr

it is not a well worded note alright. bit shitty. just return book. you know the drill now. shout "fuck em!" in your head and be done with it. not worth it.

we have a similar scheme - its just another thing to organise - I'd rather not have the books - we have our own books.

I think it is a bit off to assume the book is lost and mention a fine when it was not brought back on that first day. Also, why can't she keep it for longer than a week? We have renewed books from libraries purely because DC's were enjoying them so much and wanted to read them over & over again. What is wrong with that?

It seems like a complete faff to me. Can you opt out of it and just say you will take books out of the library for DD yourself? That way you are dealing directly with the library, ours has a return date of at least a month away so chances are you would have much more time to read the book.

BTW I would be riled by the tone of the letter- how preachy & condescending!!!YANBU

I think it was a bit of an over reaction from the nursery. A reminder that the book should be returned/changed every week would be more than enough.

The tone of the note is quite overbearing.

I wouldn't have been pleased but I wouldn't be upset.

MmeLindor · 14/02/2013 12:04

I think the note is badly worded, but not worth getting in a pickle about.

Although, saying that, I bet they get the books back quicker thank if they send out a note saying,

'Dear MsStarlight, your DD forgot to bring her book back today, please would you ensure that it is returned to the library as soon as possible'

It must be infuriating to have to chase up lost or misplaced books.

Pandemoniaa · 14/02/2013 12:27

I don't think I'd have taken what is clearly a standard letter, very personally. I have a friend who is a school librarian and they've had to get very firm about book returns precisely because of the number of books that just disappear home, never to be returned. Also, it's not that you are being charged £5, just warned that this is the cost of lost books.

But I do think that they could have made their initial letter a little clearer. Rather than just "books will be changed every Wednesday" it might have helped to add "books will be lent for one week only so will be due back every Wednesday", perhaps also clarifying whether books can be re-issued for a further week if they haven't been finished.
