I've observed good teachers and given them a 3. One lesson is a snapshot of teaching competence, and as a manager, I look at the whole picture when recommending progression.

That said, a 3 will get you another observation, and that had better be a 2.

marriedinwhite · 09/02/2013 20:21

Indeed theFallenMadonna.

I can not stand this man and his smug, odious Tory face . He is clueless!

IAmLouisWalsh · 09/02/2013 20:46

My teaching is not outstanding. It is usually good, sometimes satisfactory.

But my kids make progress and pass exams, and go and do well, and sometimes even actually enjoy learning.

I have forgotten more about education than Gove has ever understood in his entire fucking lifetime, and I challenge him to do what I do for half a fucking day and survive.

I know someone who works in his department, and they say he is the most awkward person to work for ever because he never, ever, ever fucking listens.

Flisspaps · 09/02/2013 21:00

But if every lesson is outstanding, then surely that's not outstanding.

Outstanding should mean exceptional, something better than the norm. If every lesson taught met the criteria for 'outstanding' then surely 'outstanding' would actually be 'good' or 'satisfactory'?

Feenie · 09/02/2013 21:07

Oooh no because it it's satisfactory, then it's actually unstaisfactory.

Geddit?

Thank you belgianbun for reminding us why we're here. I find it really interesting that the VAST majority of people completely disagree with the changes he makes (and wish to hurt him in some very inventive ways!)- teachers, parents & people who have no link to education at all. And yet this man has the power to make serious changes on a whim, potentially damaging the education of millions of children. X

pointythings · 09/02/2013 21:11

Good point, flisspaps. But that kind of logic is too advanced for the likes of Mr Gove.

And as I have said on another thread on this topic - people are so quick to blame teachers, egged on by Gove and the Daily Mail. Never any mention of parents - the ones who can't help, the ones who can't be arsed to help, the ones who think they're too busy to help. It really is no coincidence that children from middle class homes whose parents take an active part in their education will do well, and in pretty much any school. The influence of parents on a child'a achievement in schools is wilfully understated by Gove and his ilk so that he can continue to undermine teachers. Teachers have children in their care 6-7 hours a day. Why then are they in line for roughly 100% of the flak when children do not achieve?

And ignore marriedinwhite's 'I know some really lazy teachers' stories. They never change, and have no real substance to them.

Flisspaps · 09/02/2013 21:15

Absolutely kim

But if every child passes all their exams, or exceeds their targets, then that's because exams are getting easier, not because teaching has improved.

Front cover of the Independent tomorrow looks interesting. Apparently Gove has secret plans to sell off academies. Sorry don't have a link someone on Twitter has the picture

Toadinthehole · 10/02/2013 04:21

YABU. I live in a country with an education system superior to the UK. Teachers here who have taught in the UK have often remark to me of poorly educated children, ill-informed children, mismanaged schools and so on. Yet whenever reform is proposed, a great chorus of wailing and complaining rises to the heavens.

Save the vitriol for those who got the system into this mess - not Gove.

Feenie · 10/02/2013 09:18

Yes - where are you, Toadinthehole?

RavenVonChaos · 10/02/2013 10:25

Toad in the hole.

Politicians have got the education system in a mess. Basically chopping an changing their minds every four years.

I want my children to love learning, to have a great experience on school life with teachers who are valued and have time to prepare a solid and deep learning experience. Not have to rush through a curriculum and prepare children for Sats. Children should be given a wide range of experiences and learn at their own pace. This just doesn't happen in my experience.

Teachers are treated appallingly in my opinion and I am not a teacher. I could not work in that kind of environment.
