to think that facebook is not the right medium to tell people they've lost their jobs?

My DH has just found out, via facebook, that his factory is closing today with all jobs lost. This is going to be an interesting evening isn't it?

What the fuck is going on in the world. Are MD's and CEO's so cowardly that they can't tell their staff face to face any more?

Cunts.

What the fuck??! That's shocking!

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 04/02/2013 18:45

That's shameful. Sorry, hope DH is okThanks

MrsBeep · 04/02/2013 18:46

I echo BeerTricksPotter

SoldeInvierno · 04/02/2013 18:48

Did he get this information as a gossip or is it an official communication from the company? Surely they must issue him with an official letter, no?

mablemurple · 04/02/2013 18:51

Surely the facebook page has been hacked? That would be my first thought.

Clytaemnestra · 04/02/2013 18:52

Well, I'd get him to get straight on to taking legal advice on unfair dismissal then. Redundancy is a statutory procedure, you can't just close the businesses and fuck off.

And double check its not someone having a "laugh". He has to go to work as normal if he hasn't heard differently OFFFICIALLY. Not via Facebook.

Hope all is ok.

dinkystinky · 04/02/2013 18:53

Shock That is unbelievable. Definitely get your DH to take legal advice asap!

WilsonFrickett · 04/02/2013 18:54

Has this come from a colleague who has heard before him? In which case, it's still shit but not the company's fault. I've been in this position before and we specifically ask employees not to put things on social media or email round the next shift because it's not fair on employees to hear it from someone else.

Either way though, sorry for your DP Sad

WilsonFrickett · 04/02/2013 18:55

And what Clytaemnestra said, if it's true you can't just lock the doors and go, there is a legal process to go through.

PhilMcAverty · 04/02/2013 18:56

One of the management team posted it on their FB status. It spread v quickly. quickly DH got home from work as usual, got a phone call saying it was there, logged on to find it was true and they're all being sacked tomorrow.

OP posts:
FlouncingMintyy · 04/02/2013 18:58

Presumably this is a leak and not the company's official notification.

He's just had an official phone call telling him not to come in tomorrow. They were going to announce it tomorrow and send them home, apparently, but since its out of the bag there's no point in opening the factory at all.

Couldn't have come at a worse time as I'm to ill to work at the moment. We're both in shock.

PatriciaHolm · 04/02/2013 19:05

Sounds like some disgruntled manager has decided that given he's out of a job anyway, he's no need to continue being professional. Not the company's fault, but crap anyway. I hope tomorrow brings some more useful news.

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 04/02/2013 19:05

Sorry to say but if the company goes under they can lock the doors. The employees will then be somewhere behind the tax man and any other premium creditors in line for money owed, including back pay and any redundancy beyond statutory (which i think the government steps in to pay).

It happened to my dad. People showed up to work to find the factory gates locked. That's the old school way. Not much better than facebook.

Either is shit though Sad

WilsonFrickett · 04/02/2013 19:05

What an idiot! And what a terrible way to find out, do people not think any more? Angry. They will have held the managers back, told them so as to give them time to prepare for telling the staff tomorrow and then some arse puts it on his facebook?

PhilMcAverty · 04/02/2013 19:14

The manager in question works at another plant. I hope he has his unprofessional arse kicked.

OP posts:
BigAudioDynamite · 04/02/2013 19:19

I imagine the guy is as shocked and pissed off as everyone else. Who is going to kick his arse? He's not employed any more...

WhoWhatWhereWhen · 04/02/2013 19:24

this may help

www.gov.uk/your-rights-if-your-employer-is-insolvent/overview

PhilMcAverty · 04/02/2013 19:31

Yes he is. They're only closing one plant. Though I suspect not for much longer after this.

OP posts:
PhilMcAverty · 04/02/2013 19:34

Thanks whowhat I'll get him to have a look. Not sure how it works though if they're not closing the whole company. They're sacrificing his plant to try and save the other by the sound of it.

What a way to find out though. We need to get the kids to bed so we can sit down and work out what the hell we do now.

OP posts:
Clytaemnestra · 04/02/2013 19:58

Well, if they aren't bankrupt, then they seem to be utterly ignoring the law.

If your DH is on a permanent contract, and has been employed for over 2 years then he has a claim, definitely. Otherwise I'm not sure, but seek legal advice!

sooperdooper · 04/02/2013 20:03

If they're closing one plant but not the whole company they need to go through the legal redundancy procedures, they can't just decide to sack people and the way they've gone about this is hideous - I'd get some legal advice or speak to CAB asap

Also, take screen shots of the info being posted via facebook, to prove this is the way people have been informed

Thinking of you, how horrible :(

Bogeyface · 04/02/2013 20:04

Phil PM me if you want any info about the consultation periods etc that they should have had, notice pay compensation claims etc. Just had to go through this with H when his unit got closed with no notice.

His company claimed to be bankrupt but have started up again with a slightly new name the day after they put 150 people out of work with no notice, no pay and no redundancy payments. Sadly it is just about legal, although morally it stinks to high heaven :(
