good value or not?

Afternoon all

What do you all think is a justifiable price for a candle? I love scented candles and kindly requested a Jo Malone one for Valentines day from the OH as a treat, but he thinks that £38 is a waste of money for a candle.

Gosh yes, money literally up in smoke.

I'm not sure how much I'd pay but probably no more than about a fiver

Factory Shop do some lovely ones...in there a fiver is expensive for one!!

If you can afford it, Jo Malone is lovely and worth imo the money.

of course it isn't "good value" but it's a present therefore a luxury / treat and value doesn't come into it.

If you have the money then fine, why buy Primark when you can afford Gucci. I personally love Yankee candles (love the little jars) but would never pay full price, I get them from outlet stores.

No more than £10 (I wouldnt spend £10, but I think thats fair for a pretty/nice smelling one)

Definite waste of money imo, even yankee candles are a lot less than that.

Gosh for £38 you could get a bunch of flowers, a box of chocs, some nice bath/massage oil and a scented candle. Or a nice meal somewhere.

Even for a treat that is a dreadful waste of money. Think about one of her perfumes instead... perhaps? Wink

Sorry, I think it's a waste of money - he could buy your perfume for that amount, or a handbag, something you'd get ongoing use from. A candle doesn't last long enough to spend that amount of money on it.

I would say £38 is a huge amount to spend on a candle. If you can afford it and you like it then fair enough. It's certainly not good value, but value isn't the most important factor when it comes to gifts/luxuries.

When I could afford it: £38 on a Diptyque candle was totally reasonable. Now we are broke, I wouldn't dream of buying them. All relative. What can you afford?

Get a moahoosive Yankee candle for £16, they last FOREVER! And smell delicious too! Although have never experienced Jo Malone??

I have bought a JM candle as a hostess gift, but I was under the gun and gritted my teeth as I handed over my card. It breaches my internal limit for a candle by about double; I would never spend that much on one for myself.

They have really lovely ones at Oliver Bonas that seem pretty similar for 20. This seems OK.

But-£38 for a Valentines Gift from the one you love to the one he loves, and it's something you may love-perfectly reasonable.

As a one off treat.

Thanks for your opinions everybody. They are expensive, but they last for about 40 hours and fill the house with a lovely smell that everybody can enjoy so I thought it was a good idea as a valentines present. I've seen other luxury scented candles online for about 17.95 so mabye I'll ask him to get me that as a compromise!

It's his 40th the day before and I'm spoiling him on that so I'll just get him a card on valentines day. He'd be annoyed if I spent money on more presents a day later.

Ikea sell really nice ones in glass jars for 99p. I'd buy 38 of those if I were you.

I am not really a candle person but if I were to buy some, I would get them from this site. No chemicals, much cheaper than Jo Malone's candles and they burn for 30-35 hours.

I have had Jo Malone candles in the past and found that they burned weirdly. Yes, they smell nice, but I have found Stone Glow just as nice and much cheaper.

Neom candles are lovely, smell divine and slightly cheaper than Jo Malone.
