Afternoon all

What do you all think is a justifiable price for a candle? I love scented candles and kindly requested a Jo Malone one for Valentines day from the OH as a treat, but he thinks that £38 is a waste of money for a candle.

oh god Neom candles are utterly utterly lovely. Was given a 3 wick one (relaxing or something?) and it is amazing - lasted ages, and the scent lingered in the house for days after each burning. They quite often have them on discount on Achica (but they're still expensive for something that goes up in smoke)

They are lovely, but absurdly overpriced even though they use very good wax (I forget what it's called, but it's better than Body Shop and others use) and oils and whatnot.

As to whether or not it's a waste, then that depends on how much you love it. None of us here can say it's a waste.

These are made using similar ingredients apparently but are hugely less expensive.

Do people really ask for a valentines gift?

I thought it was about love and romance. Telling your oh what to get you isn't romantic imo. Should he be getting you a surprise that will show how well he knows and how much he loves you?

The Royal Horticultural Society candles are gorgeous if you like slightly unusual florals.

The White Company's candles are very lovely, although they've stopped doing my favourites.

Hoping I won't get flamed .... here goes....

its all relative & personal choice, I have had Jo Malone , White Company , Aromatherapy Associates, Clinique etc candles over time & no they are not "cheap" but I love them & when I can afford them I bought them. MY DH doesn't think the White Company candles are worth it but for Christmas last year bought me a Jo Malone pomegranate noir candle & smell etc is fab and it lasted ages. I haven't bought because of the name but purely based on smell & longevity. I do buy at White company when they have 15 or 20% discount.

I agree with the posters who say that for a gift/treat etc vfm doesn't come in to it. One of my friends was quite "snotty" about my DH spending so much on a "candle" & apart from her rudeness about it I did think to myself but I don't spend £40 every month on having my nails done. Nothing wrong on having your nails done if that is your thing but for me I'd rather have my candle.

Also if its a treat go for something you wouldn't normally buy yourself.

Get him one

kirstys23 · 04/02/2013 12:49

Thanks for all the alternative suggestions everybody. I didn't know there was so many lovely candle brands out there! I'll have a look at them all and see if I can find a better priced alternative that I can buy on a regular basis :)

Thanks BeaLola - I didn't realise that my candle question would create quite a stir! I don't go and buy new clothes all the time or go out at the weekends, the things I indulge in are little luxuries for the house. Buy a few takeaways a month and you are looking at £40, at least my candle will last for ages :)

not sure if link will work but I am going to treat myself to this one for £13.50, love their bath oils too. BTW Jo Malone bath oil lovely too & you only need a little so lasts ages.

Agree about indulging in little luxuries for the house.

Enjoy your Valentines Day.

I LOVE Jo Malone stuff and, when my DH is generous enough to buy me some I welcome it with open arms! Enjoy it, it's a special prezzie, not everyday.

valiumredhead · 04/02/2013 15:22

TK Maxx is good for candles.

ginnybag · 04/02/2013 15:25

partylite are lovely.

Again, not cheap, although cheaper than this, and they use food grade wax and such so that if pets or kids get at them they're completely safe if they get eaten.

Burn well and smell great, too.

As ginny has just posted. Partylite are great.

They use cotton wicks too, so none of the black smoke and soot like you get with Yankee etc etc

You can get monthly offers so look out for them
