to want to be able to buy small swim nappies!

This is somewhat lighthearted, but has annoyed me. i have an 11 week old DD who we would like to take swimming, but not a single shop in our area stocks swim nappies which would fit her. They all start with the Huggies size 3 which goes from 20lbs. The shops I'm talking about are large Tescos, Waitrose, Co-op and Boots. Anyone know why this is so?

I think they are the smallest they go, I think because the earliest your meant to take them is from 12 weeks after jabs.

Size 3 should be fine, my ds went in them at that age.

HollyBerryBush · 02/02/2013 20:01

Have you tried a local chemist or looking at supermarket sites online? I know asda source from local stores and you can pick up at your most convenient store

TarkaTheOtter · 02/02/2013 20:02

No need to wait until first jabs, but I guess many do so maybe not enough demand to stock them in store. Huggies little swimmers size 2s are available at boots online to order into store. They start at 3kg I think.

WheresMrMonkey · 02/02/2013 20:05

Boots own had the smallest when I was looking

McNewPants2013 · 02/02/2013 20:07

Order online for in store pick up. I suppose there isn't a damand for them as many parents wait to the babies 1st injections.

ilovepowerhoop · 02/02/2013 20:07

there is no minimum age to take them swimming and they dont need to have had any of their jabs. I have seen smaller swim nappies in my local tesco. The swimming pool may sell them singly too so phone and check. We ended up using a reusable one that we got from Mothercare

Itchywoolyjumper · 02/02/2013 20:07

Have you tried your local 99p Shop? When DS was about 4 months I bought a packet of medium sized swim nappies from them for my then teeny wee boy and I couldn't get them on him they were so small. Even if they don't fit you've only wasted 99p.

PhyllisDoris · 02/02/2013 20:08

I never bothered with swim nappies. I figured that wees wouldn't really matter as so many kids wee in the pool anyway, and figured that a swimming costume would catch any solid stuff long enough for me to whisk the baby out of the water (though I never needed to, despite regular swimming sessions).

Bookwolf32 · 02/02/2013 20:09

Thanks for responses. Yes, I know I can order online, but we were going to go this weekend and i naively thought we could just pop along to the local shops to get some! Smile

Boots have a wee swim kit

ilovepowerhoop · 02/02/2013 20:13

try mothercare as you may be able to get a reusable one. Boots also used to do reusable ones

Skyebluesapphire · 02/02/2013 20:13

Our local pools will not let a child in unless they are wearing swim nappies and some places that give lessons, insist on an outer rubber nappy as well...

I always bought mine from Tesco, no problems, they sold them from XS upwards, which was 7-13lb I think?

Loupee · 02/02/2013 20:14

We use a happy nappy, so it doesn't matter if the swim nappy is a bit big. Althought I have about 4 of those towels out the swim kits!

McNewPants2013 · 02/02/2013 20:15

Phyllis that it disgusting, why do people think urinating in a public pool is acceptable

MumofWombat · 02/02/2013 20:16

I see the smallest size. They were fine. And DS has a small bum (not inherited from me I add!), I bought size 1 (age that is) reusable swim nappy to save getting the little swimmers and at 21 months they are still way to big on him. I wouldn't advise going without anything. Swimming pools have to be evacuated and left alone for a period of time when accidents happen....

ilovepowerhoop · 02/02/2013 20:19

the swim nappies dont hold in urine, they are used to prevent poo escaping into the pool. I wouldnt take them in with nothing on as it is a PITA when the pool has to be closed due to a little 'accident'

CorporeSarnie · 02/02/2013 20:24

my tiny DD used the small Huggies little swimmers from 10wks until at least 5mos, we got them online from ebay or amazon I think. She loved it & still does at 15mo, we go most weeks. She's still only in the size 3-4 little swimmers now, so this is very dependent on your baby's weight & shape. Most public pools would kick you out if you tried to put a baby in without a swim nappy, so I think Phyllis' pool is unusual in allowing this. I would recommend a wetsuit vs. a swimming costume for small babies as it helps keep them warm, again we got one off ebay. Enjoy your swim!

GoldenGreen · 02/02/2013 20:26

Just use the smallest you can find and put a swimming costume over the top

TheTiger · 02/02/2013 20:31

I've bought them in boots and tesco in the last few weeks.. and today I saw size 2 huggies (3-7 kg) reduced to £3 in asda in the baby event.

There's no minimum age for baby swimming. In DS's baby swim class there is a baby who started at 5 days old!

Footface · 02/02/2013 20:34

Sorry if wrong I honestly thought they had to have had their jabs before they went swimming.

BuntyCollocks · 02/02/2013 20:51

Get a reusable one. They're about a tenner and will save you in the long run.

littlemisstax · 02/02/2013 21:30

DD was in the XS Little Swimmers for ages. I got some packs from ebay and Mothercare, as everywhere else I found only had them in the packs with the towels.

As long as baby hasn't had a poo you can air dry the nappy to use again a few times.

DD was still in the Small little swimmers when she stopped needing them as she'd potty trained aged 22 months.

Skyebluesapphire · 02/02/2013 21:30

taken from NHS website

Swimming myths
It's a MYTH that it is unsafe to take your baby swimming around the time of a vaccination. In fact, you can take your baby swimming at any time before and after their vaccinations.

I have to admit that I thought they were not supposed to go before their jabs Blush

PhyllisDoris · 03/02/2013 11:49

McNew - I quite agree, and would never wee in a pool myself, nor would I allow DDs to wee in the pool. But people do, and baby wee is fairly innocuous and tiny amounts, compared to what's in there already.

dizzy77 · 03/02/2013 11:57

I got size 2s, own brand, in boots when we started swimming with DS at about 16 weeks. They did come up small compared to pampers/Huggies normal nappies (presumably to hold in the poo). Might be worth a look at other own brands - think size 1 is unlikely but 2s worth a try.
