Due to 'Government legislation'

How about the Government fuck off? I've made the decision (actually, it was made for me but that's neither here nor there), I'm spending the bloody money, why should I not be able to collect advantage points on that?

Wankers.

Errr diet does have an impact there were various foods I avoided with colicky dtwin1, ditto caffein. There are concerns re high fat diets, science changes all the time so who knows what they'll find out, ditto re various " safe" drugs.Nope no way for me.

stargirl1701 · 30/01/2013 21:36

I wouldn't have concerns over donor milk. I regret it wasn't even a choice for dd.

Breastmilk is so beneficial - it's really what I wanted for dd. She already has developed silent reflux and eczema as a ff baby. Formula is adequate nutritionally but i wish there had been

  1. More support
  2. The option of donor milk
PolkadotCircus · 30/01/2013 21:41

Star the benefits of bm for eczema is now disputed. There is also a study that says eczema high risk babies shouldn't be bf.

5madthings · 30/01/2013 21:42

Regardless of diet bmilk is still better, it has certain long chain fatty acids in it that can't be replicated and are not in formula that are important for brain development. There are immunities provided and it supports a babies immune system whilst its own is still developing.

Ultimately it is milk for our species not derived from cows milk it is what babies are biologically supposed to have. If you don't want it for your child that is fine but I would always choose it over formula if I could as it is better than formula.

Formula is a great substitute when necessary but is not as good as breast milk which is what human babies are biologically supposed to have.

PolkadotCircus · 30/01/2013 21:48

The jury is still out re diet and bm. Sorry unless there were guarantees of diet, drugs etc there is no way I would. Human babies aren't supposed to have a lot of things and there is a lot of hypocrisy re cows milk as come 6 months most babies are happily fed cheese, yog and a whole host of other cows milk foods.

Yes bm is preferable but sooooo not enough to stress or worry over. There are many, many other parenting choices with far bigger needs to worry over which we give little thought to.

TarkaTheOtter · 30/01/2013 21:59

polka this is getting a bit off topic now but the worry about contaminants could equally apply to cows milk/formula so I'm not sure it's a valid argument against milk bank milk.

chunder I don't think they are mutually exclusive. I think we will have to agree to disagree on this as I can't easily search for the peer reviewed economics papers on my phone (and I can't really be bothered) and quite rightly you won't just take my word for it. I hope you can see the logic behind what I was saying though.

5madthings · 30/01/2013 22:01

I agree that bfeeding is not that big a deal in the scheme of parenting but it is shown to provide better outcomes heal these over a lifespan and it has health benefits for mothers.

My eldest ius choosing GCSE options so I am well aware parenting us about more than bfeeding but I personally would still rather provide human milk for a human baby if at all possible.

Eating cheese and yog as part of a balanced diet isn't hypocritical, other than formula when needed mine haven't drunk cows milk as a drink, they don't much like it and its not necessary.

5madthings · 30/01/2013 22:02

Health wise not heal these!

stargirl1701 · 30/01/2013 22:04

It is a big deal to the health of our nation though.

MarianneM · 30/01/2013 22:04

You do all realise that they don't actually have to give you points at all? 'Tis just an artful marketing gimmick that they use the data from to target products? It's just a Brucey Bonus

I was thinking this. It's amazing how people believe these loyalty schemes are there to benefit them and then expect them as a "right". I don't have any loyalty cards as I dislike the idea of being marketed products based on my shopping habits.

And Polka - I love the picture you paint of a breast milk donor who drinks and does drugs and scoffs junk food. You're incredibly defensive and a tad hysterical.

Antipag · 30/01/2013 22:07

At the end of the day, nobody wants to make a law so complex that it can be got round or reworked by those with the money to work out how. A blanket ban on ANY promotion or benefit linked to infant formula makes sense over writing a law that bans certain promotions and benefits but not others. Too much room for manoeuvre.

PolkadotCircus · 30/01/2013 22:10

Marianne why would anybody be defensive over a parenting choice as minor as bf.As it is I have bf and ff sooooooo...

Hysterical no just very cautious re "milk banks"particularly as we already have perfectly safe, tried and tested formula for sale on every street.

More retailers pull formula after baby's death
By ALAN SCHER ZAGIER
The Associated Press
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Several more national retailers have joined Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in pulling a batch of powdered infant formula from their shelves after a Missouri newborn who consumed it apparently died of a rare bacterial infection, the companies said Friday.

Officials at Supervalu Inc., Walgreen Co., Kroger Co. and Safeway said they have removed 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn with the lot number ZP1K7G from various stores across the country as a precaution until federal health officials complete tests on the formula.

Ten-day-old Avery Cornett died Sunday after getting sick several days earlier in the southern Missouri town of Lebanon. Preliminary hospital tests indicated he died of a rare infection caused by bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii.

AP
Avery Cornett of Lebanon, Mo., was 10 days old when he died Dec. 18, 2011.

The source of the bacteria that caused the infection hasn't been determined, but it can be found in dried milk and powdered formula as well as naturally in the environment and in plants such as wheat and rice.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are removing the formula from certain stores," SuperValu spokesman Mike Siemienas said Friday. "We will hold these products from sale until we receive additional guidance from regulatory authorities and the manufacturer."

Also many people "do drugs"far more than I ever would, tis not unreasonable to want to keep tabs on what exact drugs my dc consume ditto high quantities of fat, sugar and shite.

Not exactly surevwhy one isn't allowed to not want to use a milk bank.Thankfully nobody in this country needs to.

MarianneM · 30/01/2013 22:18

You think the way you feed a baby is a minor choice but yet the issue of loyalty points in a shop is very important.

Says a lot about your priorities.

PolkadotCircus · 30/01/2013 22:21

I think you'll find they are too different issues.

PolkadotCircus · 30/01/2013 22:23

The differences between 6 months of bm and ff are pretty minor in comparison to plenty of other parenting issues -sorry but not a lot I can do about that.

5madthings · 30/01/2013 22:25

Er babies need breast or formula milk for at least 12mths and bfeeding if continued past a year has many benefits. Two of mine fed till over three and a half years, one for 18mths babies don't just breed for 6mths.

5madthings · 30/01/2013 22:26

Bfeed not breed... Breeding babies would be err worrying!

MarianneM · 30/01/2013 22:27

The differences between 6 months of bm and ff are pretty minor in comparison to plenty of other parenting issues

Interesting statement.

stargirl1701 · 30/01/2013 22:31

Yet all the evidence would now indicate that there is, statistically, a big impact if bf for 6 months. It has been tracked across populations. It is not minor when you are looking at the health of millions.

PolkadotCircus · 30/01/2013 22:33

Really I don't think stats show a big impact at all. Define big and in what exactly?

MarianneM · 30/01/2013 22:33

Indeed stargirl.

pickledparsnip · 30/01/2013 22:39

I would take donated breastmilk over formula any day. Human milk for human babies on facebook puts women in touch with others who have surplus milk that they are kindly donating. No one is screened unless requested, but women obviously discuss whatever questions/ issues they have. Personally if a breastfeeding woman offered me milk I would believe what she said with regards to booze and fags. Why would she lie? Anyway, milk can be flash heated.
