Then words like Wanker, Bastard, Twat and Tosser are off limits too? The blatant double standard is very irritating.

Am I the only one who thinks like this??

OP posts:
JammySplodger · 29/01/2013 13:48

I've thought that too.

May I add knob-head too.

SPsFanjoIsAsComfyAsAOnesie · 29/01/2013 13:48

I don't object to any of those listed Grin

JammySplodger · 29/01/2013 13:50

(I'm going to have to point out though, I do use wanker, bastard, twat, tosser and knob-head much more than bitch, slut and whore.)

Dryjuice25 · 29/01/2013 14:00

I know what you mean but to me it sounds like whore, slut and bitch are even more derogatory and much more degrading than bastard and twat etc. IYSWIM

Trazzletoes · 29/01/2013 14:03

I hate them all. They are all horrible.

(Do sometimes refer to people as knobs though if they are really doing my head in)

ShephardsDelight · 29/01/2013 14:03

Are they Dryjuice? like Wanker refers to masturbation etc.

OP posts:
ShephardsDelight · 29/01/2013 14:03

Yeah Knobhead is one too,

extracrunchy · 29/01/2013 14:05

The thing that's different about slut and whore is that they're derogatory on the basis that the women are "putting themselves about" - i.e. being commodified and subjugated by men. The others are derogatory but less objectionable in terms of anti feminist impact.

PeppermintPasty · 29/01/2013 14:07

I would use the second set of terms towards men and women (even twat) not really I never swear

The first are exclusively anti women IMO, and surely that's the point-there are so many derogatory names for women in society for a reason. I'm sure I don't need to point it out to you.

RedPencils · 29/01/2013 14:07

They are all horrible words, although I do sometimes use bitch. More as a verb rather than an insult.

Cactuar · 29/01/2013 14:08

I don't know anybody wh objects to the first set of words but not the second?

However they are not really equivalent insults. The first set of words are insults typically used against women to describe what is deemed as unacceptable female behaviour. The second set of words, although often used as insults against male, are not really based on gender specific behaviour. A bastard can be male or female, as can a Tosser or Wanker whereas Twat is just a variation on cunt i.e using female genitalia as an insult.

Cannot think of any male equivalents to Slut and Whore?

Cactuar · 29/01/2013 14:09

X-post with peppermint :)

SolidSnake · 29/01/2013 14:09

extracrunchy Yep

Surely both sexes can be 'bastards' though?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 29/01/2013 14:09

Shephards
Bitch, slut and whore tend to be female only insults. Bastard, twat, and wanker aren't gender specific.

MurderOfGoths · 29/01/2013 14:10

I don't object to either in isolation, I do object to the first set being used only to refer to women.

If you are going to use them, then use them fairly.

Equal rights for swearwords!

richardsimmonstanktop · 29/01/2013 14:11

I don't think they're equivalent - if you call someone a slut or a whore, you are talking about their sexual behaviour, in a quite frankly horrible way. If you call someone a wanker, you are not talking about them specifically masturbating.

SolidSnake · 29/01/2013 14:11

This is why asshole is the best swear word, because everyone has one Grin

SolidSnake · 29/01/2013 14:13

Also, like many said, 'slut' and 'whore' were words created by men to degrade and shame women about their sexual exploits. The other words don't have the same background or connotations.

Cactuar · 29/01/2013 14:13

SolidSnake Grin

seeker · 29/01/2013 14:13

OP- I suspect that if you can't see the difference, nothing anyone could say could make you understand.

chocoluvva · 29/01/2013 14:15

I don't like any of them either.

If very pushed I'd go as far as calling someone an arse, but only to DH.

ThingummyBob · 29/01/2013 14:15

I wouldn't use the first set at all.

The second set is a bit more my level Wink

Its the way that the first set are used solely against women that makes them different imo. They are used even if the woman in question is doing nothing more than simply being a woman.

The second set are usually used, along with others, to indicate problem behaviour, as perceived by the user Grin

I've never heard men or woman using twat, wanker etc in song lyrics for example like I have the first set.

I've never seen a man referred to as a knob-head or wanker simply for being a man Confused

Horrble mysogeny.

WowOoo · 29/01/2013 14:15

I'd never call a woman a tosser or a wanker. (in my head!)
For me, it's an insult for a man.

Twat and bastard are for either.

We've talked about a really bitchy man we know of, but I can only think of that one man as a bitchy type.

Interesting!

MewlingQuim · 29/01/2013 14:16

Regarding male equivalents to slut and whore - I called a promiscuous male friend a dog once, he was highly offended even though I thought I was being mild and jokey. Guess it touched a nerve....

Hmm
ShephardsDelight · 29/01/2013 14:17

Wanker, Tosser etc is only used towards men though, when was the last time you heard' that sue's a right wanker!'

I'm not disagreeing they aren't nice words its just the level of double standard I'm objecting too.
