to go on holiday abroad with a 10 month old?

Aworryingtrend · 28/01/2013 21:49

DS1 is currently 4 months old. We are thinking of booking a holiday and are really tempted to go abroad but I just don't know how feasible it would be with a 9/10 month old as he would be then. He's bottle fed so don't know what we would do about sterilising bottles? And can yopu take a pushchair on a plane/ferry?

Should we just abandon the idea and go on holiday in the UK (again)?

depends where you go = we went to spain and being a far more family friendly country it was actualy easier being out and about with baby than here!

PacificDogwood · 28/01/2013 21:52

Why would you be U?
Of course YANBU.

At 9/10 months old he's likely to be mobile and sticking things in his mouth, so bottle sterilising is not really making much sense anymore.
Most airlines take at least one baby related item free; you can take buggy right up to the plane.

Don't overthink it - It'll be fine. People in other countries have babies too Wink.

FWIW our DS1 was in the South of France aged 3 months Smile
Hope you have a great holiday.

threepiecesuite · 28/01/2013 21:54

We took 6mo DD to Majorca, and then I took her alone to Spain at 8mo. An absolute doddle it was.
Pushchair goes to plane with you then hand it to staff at the gate
Take your bottle brush and sterilising tablets and just boil the kettle
Late evenings strolling with pushchair, splashed in the pool in the early morning sun, long naps in the day in the shade while I read my book, fantastic.

Now she's almost 3, it's a whole different story

Sirzy · 28/01/2013 21:55

I took DS to minorca at 4 months and Rhodes at 9 months. As long as your organised its fine

ripsishere · 28/01/2013 21:56

Why would you BU? our DD was born in foreign. She flew for 12 hours at 4 weeks old.
As has been pointed out up there /, you'll enjoy it. Young children are much more portable than, for example, a young seal.
Make sure you get your DCs passport in plenty of time and you're good to go.

Joiningthegang · 28/01/2013 21:56

Best time to do it imo. Took dd at 9months - she wasnt moving - so much.easier than a toddler.

Check with your airline but we took car seat and buggy with us for free.

CloudsAndTrees · 28/01/2013 21:56

It's fine. Go self catering so you can boil bottles, or go somewhere that caters for well for babies. There are lots of places when you start looking.

Planes take pushchairs all the time.

fallenangle · 28/01/2013 22:01

Of course you can take your little one. Check with the airline about the cost of the pushchair, it will almost certainly count as hold baggage. Have a great time. Should be no problem on a ferry. Sterilising bottles depends on what facilities they have where you are going. Self catering no prob if there is a microwave. Hotel, you'll need to ask.

redandwhitesprinkles · 28/01/2013 22:01

Took my 4 month ds to Minorca and used sterilising tablets (and cartons) as was only giving 1 ff.

However, at 8 1/2 months he can crawl -fast, and is cruising.

Depends on child friendliness of hotel/ apartment.

BlackCatMummy · 28/01/2013 22:09

Hi,
I'm new to mumsnet but I hope I can help. We've just had to take our 4 month old DS on 2 long haul trips. The jet lag sucks a bit but other than that it's been great.
For sterilising, you can get Milton sterilising tablets (we got ours from Tesco) which are great and the water lasts for 24hrs.
Also, you can take pushchairs on planes. We have a Maclaren which worked great and the airlines are happy to take them and you can take them right to the plane door. also you can order ready made formula from Boots to collect airside if you're going through Heathrow (I'm not sure if the other airports do it).
I hope that helps and I do hope you get to go on your trip

forgottenpassword · 28/01/2013 22:09

If you are concerned about sterilising buy a pack of Milton tablets and a large plastic container for sterilising. If worried about food you can take jars, Ella's pouches and some baby ready meals which don't need refrigerating - I think Heinz do a range. Only issue I found was getting them to stay still on the plane. Bring plenty of books etc to keep baby occupied and be prepared to walk up and down the aisle of the plane endlessly and get in the way of cabin crew a lot.

girlynut · 28/01/2013 22:11

Of course you're not BU. We went on holiday to South of France when DSs were 3 months old. Plenty of easy travel kit for babies e.g. steriliser bags, disposable bibs, etc.

GiveMeSomeSpace · 28/01/2013 22:11

Do it, do it. There's nothing to stop you. The more they travel the more they'll be used to it and just get on with it.

We went to Australia with a 10 month old and a 2.5 year old and then Calfornia with a 4 yr old, 2 yr old and 10 month old. Both went well.

Good luck :)

Aworryingtrend · 28/01/2013 22:27

thanks everyone you are making me feel more confident! just need to find a baby friendly apartment. where do you think is best to look, just thomas cook and Thomson etc? or are there specialist family holiday companies? we dont have a huge budget.

Don't be silly, go on holiday, I took my dd to South Africa when she was 6months then to Cyprus when she was 11 months. Much easier to travel the younger they are as they aren't as mobile. I bottle fed dd and used the Milton tablets in SA and when we want to Cyprus she was eating solids and only having a couple of bottles so didn't bother sterilising. We booked self catering and it was really easy.

I think you can take a buggy for free on all airlines, we didn't have a problem on any of our flights. The likes of easyjet and Ryanair don't give you luggage allowance for the little ones but if you go long haul you will get, so that's a bonus.

Book a holiday and have fun Grin

DaisyDoodle · 28/01/2013 22:38

You'll be fine. The trickiest thing is working nap/milk/feeding schedules around the flight but even security guards at heathrow can be helpful.

BubaMarra · 28/01/2013 22:51

You will be fine. Mine travel since 6mo and they love it. I once saw a baby at the beach on a Greek island, she was 1 month old at the time and traveled all the way from France. So many other babies at the beach as well. If you go slightly off season, when it' not that hot yet, chances are you will be surrounded by families with very young children/babies.
When on plane, if the baby starts crying because of the ear pressure, just feed him/her and it will get better because of the jaw movements during the feed.

damnitdamnit · 28/01/2013 23:02

You can buy sterilising bags to go In microwave. Take up less room.

threepiecesuite · 28/01/2013 23:07

We stayed here when DD was a baby and it was absolutely ideal.

DamnBamboo · 28/01/2013 23:08

You will be fine. I have taken several of them from aged 5 weeks and had a great time and coped just fine!

Have fun!

BackforGood · 28/01/2013 23:15

Well, I'm going against the grain completely. Not saying YABU, - you do what you want Smile but the thought of taking a 10month old to an airport, then the wait there, then the flight (they are on the move at 10 months), then the transfer at the other end, then keeping them out the heat, etc. never appealed to me at all. I'd advise getting a cottage in this country for a few years until they are a bit bigger.

I can see I'm massively in the minority on this thread, but you did ask.... Smile

ceeveebee · 28/01/2013 23:18

We took our twins to Mallorca when they were 10 months old. It was good fun - they loved the beach and swimming in the sea
We just booked a villa - I called a few companies and explained we needed two cots, high chairs etc and asked them to recommend a place. We booked quite last minute so it was quite cheap

We flew with Monarch and they give you 10kg extra luggage allowance if travelling with an infant. We took Milton tablets and lots of cartons of formula - you can preorder from boots at the airport (all airports di thus i think - we flew from luton)so you collect after security, otherwise they make you open and drink some.
We fed babies on take off and landing and they were fine

Personally I would avoid July and August - too hot and too expensive.

Try
Baby friendly boltholes - we've just booked a place in Portugal through them for May
Tots too
Tots 2 travel

foreverondiet · 28/01/2013 23:19

We went abroad (hot) when DS2 was 6 months old. Take lightweight buggy and need car seat too.

Be prepared for him to eat jars of baby food rather than homemade.

If you want to sterilise bottles just use disposable cold water sterilising bags. or take microwave steriliser - and load us once a day and give to room service to zap.

Cartons of milk for journey (buy in airport though).

Hoofhearted69 · 28/01/2013 23:23

Try totstotravel.co.uk for baby friendly holiday place, huge variety, do it while they are still fairly immobile I reckon! Good luck.
