To really loathe it when people eat on trains?

I'm not talking about long distance ones, or even mid distance. I'm talking about commuter trains where the journey time is no more than an hour from one end of the line to the other.

I'm sitting on the train opposite someone who is literally demolishing a Maccy meal of some sort. The burger is collapsing everywhere. There are bits dropping all over the place. The sound of his chomping is making me feel ill and it absolutely stinks. Someone else in the next row has a flipping kebab. It's 9pm on a Monday! He's not even pissed. The entire carriage now smells terrible.

I''ve had people clipping there fingernails on trains, more than once.. That irritated me immensely more than eating (although I'm not keen on that either -egg sandwiches should be banned in public places.)

ledkr · 28/01/2013 22:02

Woman at work doing this today saying how marvellous it is and how easy she finds it. She spent the whole day talking about food though telling us the meagre amounts she was having and about the huge puddings she ate yesterday. I just don't get it.
head what's for breakfast my love? Grin

VinegarTits · 28/01/2013 22:03

i think the woman with the wine has the right idea

BrawToken · 28/01/2013 22:11

I can never even wait til the train moves before I start my train food Grin

Francagoestohollywood · 28/01/2013 22:19

Yanbu. I especially disapprove of people eating sandwiches that usually stink of cheap ingredients.

jellybrain · 28/01/2013 22:26

I am happy for people to eat smelly food on the train/bus as I rarely use them. I would however gladly throttle those people who eat hot smelly food at their desks, making the office stink and me want to vomit.Confused

YADNBU. I moved seats twice the other night (train before 6pm) because of gut wrenching smelly food on a commuter train.

ihearsounds · 28/01/2013 22:38

How do you know they weren't fasting yesterday, and finally got their hunger back today.... This could be you tomorrow.

Not everyone eats at the same time, so to you dinner time is 6, but to others its 9ish.. Could have been in some crappy meeting for the last couple of hours, and finally managed to grab a bite to eat.. Yes their dp are at home, but, after reading countless threads on here, there will be nothing waiting for them at home because they will be expected to cook for themselves.. Doesn't matter the partner has cooked for themselves and possible dc's, it is totally wrong to leave extra for dp to heat up in the microwave.

QuacksForDoughnuts · 28/01/2013 23:22

You have my sympathy, as I do find a lot of the food people eat on trains pretty gross - the bacon sandwich was a staple where I used to live. On the other hand, it could be someone's only opportunity to eat. I'm pretty sure that at some point I'll be whipping a yogurt or similar out on the commute to work, just because I have to leave home so early and am shite at getting up on the morning! I should also admit to having eaten a pot of homemade gigantes - with onion and garlic in, among other things - coming home on the train the other week. I was having a heavy period, had sat through a 2-hour meeting then done some food shopping then had to dash for the train, and if I hadn't spend part of the hour-long journey eating I would have had difficulty staying conscious to walk home from the end station. So it's always in the back of my mind that the person whose mayo is dripping a bit too near me might be in the same situation. Ok, not the period bit for everyone, but a cisgender male could still be hypoglycemic or similar.

KC225 · 29/01/2013 00:02

So you meant to catch the FAST train but got one that stuffs at every station.

ElliesWellies · 29/01/2013 00:02

Tbh it doesn't usually disgust me. Mostly it just makes me want a burger too.

I think eating on trains is ok so long as you chew with your mouth closed and pick something that doesn't stink the carriage out.

Narked · 29/01/2013 00:03

DH hasn't been home before 11:30 this week. He's barely had time to breathe. If the M&S at the station is closed then it's a burger. If he waits until he gets home that's another hour.

Snazzynewyear · 29/01/2013 00:11

I have often got a BK to eat on the train if I've been to London for the day for work. Otherwise I would be waiting hours to eat at home, or stuck with a cold sandwich and usually after a busy day the lure of the junk food is too much. Given people's notorious selfishness on trains (spreading bags over several seats, making noisy phone calls even in the quiet carriage) I'm not sure it's a worse sin than any other.

Actually, maybe that's it - there should be a 'no hot food' carriage as well as a quiet carriage. People would ignore it, of course, but at least you'd be justified in moaning at them then.

NotjustaMummy · 29/01/2013 03:37

If I didn't eat on the train I'd never get to eat at all! Yes, it's not ideal, but it's only an hour or so you have to put up with the smell.

EuroShagmore · 29/01/2013 07:50

I'm with you OP. It's disgusting. The smells, the sounds, bleugh.

I used to live on trains that went thought some not naice areas and they were full of people shovelling smelly Maccy D or BK into their faces. I have now moved train routes and there are far fewer people doing it. For someone who suffers from travel sickness, it is a very welcome change.

WaynettaSlobsLover · 29/01/2013 07:57

Fasting is bad for you? Wtaf? Hmm I do an entire month at Ramadan and it's a complete detox as well as helping psychological response to food. I lose weight and feel great at the end of the month. Please dont speak about something you clearly have no proper knowledge about and most likely have not experienced.

TheCollieDog · 29/01/2013 08:02

I eat in trains because at least 5 times a week I'm on a long distance train for work. I rarely get a chance to get lunch at work, I leave before 6am, so I eat my breakfast and often my supper on the train.

I have to out up with noisy people in the quiet coach when I'm working, etc etc etc, so I'm afraid others will have to put up with my terrible habit of needing to eat to stay alive.

I know wanting to have my supper or eat breakfast is unreasonable, but tough.

GetOrf · 29/01/2013 08:05

I hate it as well. Sometimes I grab some soup if I have not eaten all day and I am very conscious that I might be stinking the carriage out.

Those minging bacon sandwixhes they sell in the buffet really smell.

Bloody trains.

Goldenhandshake · 29/01/2013 08:57

Food smells I can generally handle, it's people's foul breath and body odour on a packed train I cannot deal with. Brush your teeth and use mouthwash people!

dreamingofsun · 29/01/2013 09:01

i eat on trains. never thought it would be an issue. yes the journey might only be 1 hour, but it takes me an hour to get to the station and then i might have a journey of another hour the other end. i do try and get it in my mouth though!

Greensleeves · 29/01/2013 09:10

Sometimes we feed our kids on the train, if we have been out for the day. They're tired and hungry, we can't afford to shell out for pub/restaurant meal. So they munch on the train and then they can go to bed when we get home

RuleBritannia · 29/01/2013 09:15

I expect a poster has already mentioned the fact that it's bad manners to eat in public unless it's in a cafe or restaurant - ie a place provided in which to at. The problem is with fast food outlets that don't provide tables and chairs.

That apart, why don't those eating in public to the sufferance of others make proper time for a proper meal? In the OP's case, couldn't they have waited until they reached home or whatever destination they were aiming for?
