I hate tattoos. Whilst I appreciate everyone has a right to their own taste and choices I still cannot get over the fact that people have them in places where they are visible.

A colleague of mine has just returned to work after M leave with a horrific tattoo from her wrist to her elbow. How can she go out and meet clients looking like that?? It can be seen through tops and obviously below short sleeved tops.

What I really don't like is seeing lovely brides on their wedding days, strapless dresses and tattoos on their upper arms and backs..... urgh!!!!!!

Anyone else with me??

It's human nature to judge people and well all do it. Just as we judge situations.

At a very basic level, it's how we assess danger. It becomes less of a requirement to judge people (but still a habit) as we descend the hierarchy of needs.

It's a primary need to feel safe and secure so you might judge someone who seems threatening and approaches you in a menacing manner in a dark alley.

It's not an important need to like everything you see. But the habit to judge is hard to lose.
Just saying....

mirry2 · 29/01/2013 20:34

Most posters on mumsnet are making judgements of some kind. IMO there is little difference in expressing opinion and making judgement.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 29/01/2013 20:35

I don't like them, i suppose because i think the person has been pretty shortsighted and maybe foolish to think that something they chose at one age will look good, or be important to them years later, and forever,i am a fairly cautious ahead-thinking person.

I also think many tattoos are just ugly.

I can see they have enormous significance to the person who has them done, and so i respect that.

nkf · 29/01/2013 20:37

As I said on another post tonight, what is interesting about MN is that it's a way of finding out how polarising people's choices can be. Nobody is likely to say anything to your face in real life about your tattoos, baby's name, wedding dress, husband. Deep down, they think all sorts of things and here they type it.

Until I found MN, I had no idea how many people I was potentially annoying in the course of a day. It's been an eyeopener.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 29/01/2013 20:39

Nkf

I don't type what i really think on MN. What I think is sometimes very nasty and dark, and not well thought out.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 29/01/2013 20:40

I type what i think, after i have thunk a bit.

nkf · 29/01/2013 20:41

I don't mean deep down dark thoughts. I mean all those small prejudices we have. I have stopped asking people for salt after one thread where it turned out many many people would be deeply offended if their guests did that. I had no idea it would bother anyone. It wouldn't me.

Spero · 29/01/2013 21:07

I don't find tattoos 'annoying' - I am just intrigued by why you would chose to have something permanent etched into your skin, particularly if its poorly done or on your face or neck, so cover up options are limited.

I had a fascinating time at Alton Towers water park thingie recently. So many women with - I assume - their children's names tattooed around the top of their thighs. Why? Doesn't annoy me, I just thought it looked ugly. Get a necklace with their names on, at least you can take that off.

McKayz · 29/01/2013 21:55

MrsDV that sounds lovely xx

toldmywrath · 29/01/2013 21:59

I agree with Jamie they will be there for life. And they look absolutely awful on old biddies, not so awful on old men though.

EmmaBemma · 29/01/2013 21:59

Love tattoos. Reading a fascinating book at the moment called Bodies of Subversion, all about the history of women and tattooing. Got gorgeous pictures in it as well. I'm tattooed already and am planning two big pieces on my arms, one based on a phoebe anna traquair embroidery, and the other a bi autumnal scene with various flora and fauna. They'll all be covered when I'm back to work!

EmmaBemma · 29/01/2013 22:00

A big autumnal scene, that was...

EmmaBemma · 29/01/2013 22:01

I think they look awesome on "old biddies" (sexist much?) and they'll be much more commonplace as we all get older.

cheeseandbiscuitsplease · 29/01/2013 22:04

Well I think they make people look rough.
Flame away.
It's my opinion - they look dreadful!

mirry2 · 29/01/2013 22:04

At what age does one become an 'old biddy'?

ditavonteesed · 29/01/2013 22:08

'old biddy's' just gets better.

AKissIsNotAContract · 29/01/2013 22:14

That book looks good emma. I think I'll get that.

nkf · 29/01/2013 22:25

If they become too commonplace, they won't be subversive any more.

AKissIsNotAContract · 29/01/2013 22:26

I've put some pics on Instagram if you want to see them Dita

ginhag · 29/01/2013 22:26
