To think the new citizenship is waaaaay easier if this is the sort of thing that's going to be in it?

Sample questions here.

I got 8 out of 10 without even trying, and I could never get anywhere with the sample questions on the old one (67%, never any higher).
I can do all the history and culture stuff, it's the immigration and benefit stuff I'm crap on. What does everyone else think?

No3 didnt actually have a correct answer on the multiple choice.

HollyBerryBush · 27/01/2013 20:56

PS 10/10

Tee2072 · 27/01/2013 20:59

That one I can pass! 10/10.

InNeedOfBrandy · 27/01/2013 21:00

I got 9/10 but I knew as soon as I clicked the end button I had put the wrong one in.

Tee2072 · 27/01/2013 21:00

What's the right answer, Holly?

redexpat · 27/01/2013 21:00

Full marks to me! I barely scraped 50% on the old one!

Hollyberry

  1. In 1801, a new version of the official flag of the United Kingdom was created. What is it often called?

Correct answer: Union jack

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 27/01/2013 21:00

10/10, and as Holly says, no 3 should be the Union Flag, not Union Jack.

HollyBerryBush · 27/01/2013 21:02

Union 'Jack' is a nautical flag - the flag as we know it is the Union flag, no jack.

musicposy · 27/01/2013 21:04

Much better! I got 10/10

The last one was a load of rubbish. I got less than 50% (born and bred here). It was full of ridiculous facts with answers so near each other that they meant nothing.

This one is at least full of stuff British people should mostly know.

pointythings · 27/01/2013 21:04

You see, I would have gone for Union Jack, only I thought that was too easy and it had to be a trick question! Blush.

Also got the jury service one wrong, which is embarrassing after almost 16 years in the UK, but my excuse is that I've never been called...

OP posts:
redexpat · 27/01/2013 21:05

Yes Holly, I know that. But that's not what the question is asking- the question is what is it often called. You can't argue with that! Smile

pointythings · 27/01/2013 21:05

musicposy I agree - I'm not a native, but I know all this stuff because I've chosen to live here and the country's history, landscape and culture are part of the reason why I love it here.

MrsAFlowerpot · 27/01/2013 21:05

10 for me. I was rubbish when DH took his 5 years ago.

HollyBerryBush · 27/01/2013 21:07

bangs gavel<

I declare it a stupid question

Like the jubliee question too! the word jubilee was invents to specifically for Victorias 60th, it mean s '60' but I suppose that has been hijacked too (silver, golden, diamond) - I am a mine of crap trivia Grin

redexpat · 27/01/2013 21:08

Bet you're brilliant at a pub quiz though Wink

MrsBW · 27/01/2013 21:13

The Union Jack being named such only while (whilst?) being flown at sea is a common misconception. Apparently. Depending on where you read...

pointythings and that's what it should be about, IMO. It should be stuff you should pick up by living here which is part of our history, landscape and culture. I think this new one seems much more like that.

musicmadness · 27/01/2013 21:32

10/10. Much better, at least that one has questions which most British people can (or should be able to) answer! The old one was rubbish.

pointythings · 27/01/2013 21:46

Yep, musicposy. Much as I hate to give the Tories credit for anything at all, this one makes a lot of sense. And if you lot do decide to leave the EU and I end up taking UK nationality (which I will, my whole life is here now) then at least I will be taking a test on stuff that matters.

TalkinPeace2 · 27/01/2013 21:52

I got 22/25 in the old one .... 10/10 in this one.

blackeyedsusan · 27/01/2013 21:55

holly... the children's dad commented on the union jacks hanging in the window.. i was Shock have we flooded and floated out to sea?

I got it wrong on a millionaire question... (they can't be wrong!) think it has been on qi too...

PartTimeModel · 27/01/2013 22:30

10/10
Naturalised Brit (pre-test)

KatyTheCleaningLady · 27/01/2013 22:38

10/10.

I took the old test. It was hard and utterly rubbish. I swear, it was just a matter of memorizing weird dull statistics like "What percentage of Wales is Buddhist?" They literally gave tables of statistics and then made questions out of them. And there were entire chapters on really boring crap about rights and how local governments work.

You have to take a vow not to tell anyone what questions you were asked. I am so, so glad that there are people out there who broke that vow because I Googled it, saw what sorts of things they asked - basically any and every possible statistic or fact listed in the book. I'd initially assumed that they would be asking more "big picture" sorts of questions to see if you got the point. Instead, it was like being asked to read this thread and then being asked "What is the user name of the OP?" and "At what time did PartTimeModel post in this thread?"
