To think this Ikea price increase is unreasonable

Hi all I recently bought my niece a childs kitchen from ikea as a Christmas present which with everything included ( top and botton sections ) came to exactly £60, the kitchen was well made and reasonably priced so I decided to purchase one for my daughter for her 2nd Birthday this month.

When I went to buy it I realised that they have put the price up by £30 which means that for the same item I would have to pay £90.

I accept that there are price increases on items all the time but I am surprised that they are now charging so much more for the same item which only a couple of months ago was so much cheaper. The item wasnt on sale previously either.

Would it be unreasonable for me to contact them to ask why this increase has occured??

Well you could try looking at the financial pages and see what the increased cost in fuel has added to the transportation of goods. Exchange rates from manufacturing companies etc. Whether Ikea fall into new taxation brackets. add in the rise in insurance as well.

SamSmalaidh · 27/01/2013 18:29

When I last looked (a year or so ago) the kitchen was £60 for the bottom bit and £30 for the top. Sounds like there was either a sale or some mistake was made and you got a bargain? Or at least it was a temporary price reduction and has now returned to the usual price.

Trills · 27/01/2013 18:29

Presumably it has gone up in price because they believe that people will still buy it at the higher price and so they will make more money.

Shops are there to make money. Not to supply you with stuff. They don't care that you can't afford it at the higher price as long as enough other people can.

YWNBU to contact them but I doubt it would result in anything that you would find satisfactory.

CowboyPie · 27/01/2013 18:30

It wouldn't be unreasonable for you to contact them and ask why, but it would be unreasonable to expect them to reduce the price for you.

scottishegg · 27/01/2013 18:30

Just surprised that something has gone up so much in price in a few months I wouldnt object to a fair price increase but I think this is unreasonable.

I was looking at it for my nephew as a Xmas present and the bottom part was £60 and the top part £30, so I think a mistake was made and you got a bargain.

PrincessOfChina · 27/01/2013 18:34

We bought it for Christmas and it was definitely £60 for the lot. £45 the bottom bit and £15 for the add on bit.

CaptChaos · 27/01/2013 18:35

There was a sale at the beginning of December, the whole thing for around £60, so you got a bargain. You can contact them if you like, but this is probably what you'll be told.

They can charge what they think people will pay. It's a shop, not a charity.

rubbishonlineshopper · 27/01/2013 18:35

Hi, it was in the sale before Christmas - they have been £90 in the past I'm pretty sure...

scottishegg · 27/01/2013 18:36

Oh thats really bizarre- Maybe its probably best not to say anything then!!! I definately got it for the cheaper price before xmas! Maybe it was a Xmas reduction then!! Whoops

I bought it about two weeks ago and I think it was just over £60, so not sure when it went to £90 but it isn't anymore.

Nixea · 27/01/2013 18:37

As others have said, it was reduced in price at the end of last year so you got both parts for £60, normal price for both sections is £90.

mummytotwins · 27/01/2013 18:37

It was reduced over the Christmas period to £60 and was then put back to the original price of £90

PandaOnAPushBike · 27/01/2013 18:47

It hasn't gone up in massively price. It appears to have been reduced for some reason or you were charged the wrong price when you bought the first one you bought.

Using <a class="break-all" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20111027065700/www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S49874533/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Wayback Machine (internet archive) you can see that in October 2010 it cost £89, in October 2011 it cost £89, and October 2012 it cost £89.

PickleSarnie · 27/01/2013 18:49

Did you use the self scanner and forget to scan the top part? I accidentally ended up with two high chair trays that way. They were stuck together and I don't think the tills check the weight of the item like they do in supermarkets.

MrsToddsShortcut · 27/01/2013 18:52

I bought it before Christmas for my daughter and it was definitely £60 for both bits. I don't think I would pay £90 for it tbh...

PandaOnAPushBike · 27/01/2013 18:53

It looks like the price drops to £59 each Nov/Dec. So just wait till then to buy it.

AnitaManeater · 27/01/2013 18:56

I bought it in 2010 and paid £90 for both sections. I think you got a bargain Smile

MrsToddsShortcut · 27/01/2013 18:56

Don't get me wrong, it's actually a lovely kitchen, but £90 would be out of my budget. I was lucky!

scottishegg · 27/01/2013 18:57

I have the receipt here I definitely paid £60 for both parts has have a few others on this thread.

The Ikea kitchen normally costs £90, it was temporarily reduced before Xmas to £60. I don't think it's unreasonable, but you have been unlucky. What about trying eBay for a second hand one?

scottishegg · 27/01/2013 19:10

Its a lovely kitchen so guess I have to just suck it up, I genuinally didnt realise it was on sale when I bought it tho, Never mind u win some u lose some I guess! Thanks all!

They increased the price of their glass candles too.

79p to 1.29 in the space of about a week Shock

PartTimeModel · 27/01/2013 22:36

You got a bargain. I was looking at them at least 2 years ago and it was £90 for the 2 bits

expatinscotland · 27/01/2013 22:38

We bought one last October. It was £90.
