To wonder why Grace Dent is suddenly all over the place?

She really comes across as an unpleasant piece of work! Snide, smug, self absorbed to the point of narcissism and nowhere near as funny as she thinks she is. She is not Dorothy Parker, she is not even Catlin Moran.

So why in the name of suffering Jesus is she on every media network known to humankind? Radio 4 is usually a sanctuary from such nonsense... but she was on the other day. TWICE.

I really like her Am surprised at the hatred here i would have though MN'ers would love her.

ComposHat · 26/01/2013 23:36

springheeledjack Catlin Moran can do no wrong as far as. I am concerned.

Excellent user name by the way. I was briefly obsessed with the whole spring heeled jack phenomena.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/01/2013 00:08

I find her quite funny

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/01/2013 00:09

I do detest Caitlin Moran though. Feminist icon of a generation? Clearly not my generation.

ComposHat · 27/01/2013 10:11

Nah don't buy the feminist icon guff either but I do think she's a very good writer - anyone who described David Cameron
as looking like a C3PO made out of ham is okay by me.

FunnyLittleFrog · 27/01/2013 10:17

She was good when she wrote for the Guardian on Saturdays, miss that. Esp World of Lather

SpringHeeledJack · 27/01/2013 12:47

tvm, Compos

me too

yet since I use it on here, now to me SHJ merely signifies 'woman spaffing away hods of time on mn'

Grin
SpringHeeledJack · 27/01/2013 12:49

I went RIGHT off CM after a year of her on the twitter

she seems v lofty

SolidSnake · 27/01/2013 12:50

I can't stand Caitlin Moran, some of what she has said is very very questionable

AKissIsNotAContract · 27/01/2013 12:57

I thought I was alone in my hatred of Grace but I've found a kindred spirit in ComposHat

LeeCoakley · 27/01/2013 12:57

Like coco, I loved her BB column for the Radio Times. Hadn't heard of her for years so assumed that Grace Dent was a psuedonym. Can I have a link to the cause of such dislike? Grin Then I can pronounce which corner I am in.

squalorvictoria · 27/01/2013 14:02

I went right off Caitlin Moran AND Lauren Laverne on Twitter. Got desperately bored of their tweets to each other clogging up my timeline.

As for GD, I agree with you OP. I've never been able to warm to her. And that Twitter book just came across as a desperate, zeitgeist-y, money grabbing load of bollocks to me. Maybe it's really funny, but I don't want to read a book about how someone got popular on Twitter.

Southeastdweller · 27/01/2013 14:07

Can't stand her. Thinks she's much funnier than she actually is and has a very thin skin when it comes to taking any kind of criticism. I don't follow her on Twitter and have even muted her on my Twitter iPhone app so I don't have to read her latest thoughts that people I follow have retweeted. The sacking/HIGNFY thing last year left a very nasty taste in my mouth.

Her Twitter book was crap, by the way.

cybbo could you be any more patronising?

ComposHat · 27/01/2013 17:08

Akiss This post was inspired by a series of texts that flew between me and a friend about how much she got on our nerves and how she was suddenly unavoidable.

Southeast Yeah the HIGNFY thing, was pretty vile, threatening to get someone sacked isn't very classy at all. Especially as it was exactly the kind of thing she's managed to develop a career out of.

There are more of us Dent detesters out there than you may think!

I tried to listen to the radio 4 programme she was on about nancy Mitford and had to turn it off (despite loving nancy Mitford).

I have never heard GD before. She was awful - inarticulate, gushing and stupid.

ButTheButtons · 27/01/2013 17:24

I was at uni with her. That is all.

chickengoujons · 27/01/2013 17:25

Solidsnake what is questionable about Caitlin Moran? Just started reading her stuff - would be interested to hear your thoughts

ComposHat · 27/01/2013 17:27

SpringheeledJack I briefly considered doing my MA dissertation on Spring Heeled Jack, but didn't in the end. I hope to look into it again when I finish my PhD. I just have to think of something original to say.

Gigondas · 27/01/2013 17:31

I don't mind grace dent and like frilly, I was looking forward to the Mitford programme. Whilst it was nice she liked her, I didn't think her reasons were very well thought out (and it came across like that when Matthew Parris and Alison Hilton,??,spoke).
But she doesn't irritate me as much as others - Lauren laverne for one. You don't get medals for being in a subpar Indy band and liking unusual books or music.

ComposHat · 27/01/2013 17:51

Lauren Laverne I am largely indifferent to.

However as a teenager I loved Kenickie beyond reason. I remember riding my bike for miles to get the Come Out2nite single cos I only had enough money for the single and not the bus-fare.

This was my favourite though.

OP posts:
frillyflower · 27/01/2013 17:54

I thought it was ironic (and irritating) that GD was professing a great passion for Nancy Mitford's wit etc when I am sure (on the evidence of Grace's performance in that programme) that Nancy Mitford would have found her decidedly lacking.

She seemed to think NM was an icon of feminism or something when the whole point of NM is that she was too damn witty and spiky and anarchic to want to be any such thing.

Nothing worse than listening to someone inarticulate and stupid on the radio IMO. Made me despair as I love radio 4.

Gigondas · 27/01/2013 17:58

Yes and entirely missed point of fact Mn life was in part a series of unhappy love affairs as apparently having lots of Dior and being a writer made it ok.

frillyflower · 27/01/2013 18:08

Yes Gigondas. Exactly. Nancy didn't despise having children etc she couldn't have them and she was v unhappy in love. The Dior was a consolation.

Quite funny in a way that Grace has got NM so wildly wrong although I would have preferred not to have found that out on my favourite radio channel.

PenthouseDJ · 23/03/2018 23:03

Not just you! I can’t stick how she pops her contrived voiceover on Grace Dent: The Untold, which is produced by someone else and features hard work by a real reporter.

Botanicbaby · 24/03/2018 00:31

Grace Dent is lovely and she does reply to the 'little' people on twitter.

CM on the other hand...meh. Good on you Grace, ubiquity suits you Wink
