To not want my 2 year old to say 'fart'

DS is 2, and picking up new words all the time - a recent one being 'fart', courtesy of DP. We generally have a 'no swearing in front of DS' rule, but according to DP fart doesn't count. I get that not everyone sees it as that bad a word, but it still doesn't seem right for a toddler to be saying it. AIBU?

It's not a swear word in any way whatsoever. What else do you propose, a horrid, twee word like parp? For heavens sake, fart is fart, nothing else. It's not as though he's going to go around calling people farts is it.

familyfun · 24/01/2013 14:29

yanbu, dd1 5 came home from school and said a boy had "farted on her work", i was shocked to hear it from her it just didnt sound right from a child.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 24/01/2013 14:31

I agree...I don't even like DS saying it and he is 10!! I tried in vain to call it "pop" for as long as possible but never mind...life is full of disappointment :)

sweetkitty · 24/01/2013 14:31

My 2yo calls a fart a fart. It's not a swear word. I hate pump, trump, bottom burp, parp etc. It's a fart, everyone farts. you fart you say pardon me like you do if you burp, both are normal bodily functions.

My 5 year old has just learnt this word but I am steering her towards blow-off instead. I was brought up not to use the word fart but I realise now I am an adult that many people do not see fart as a bad word at all!

chocoluvva · 24/01/2013 14:33

I don't like that word either OP.

Apparently it's considered acceptable by many many people nowadays.

But coming from a 2YO? I'd blush too. How about 'windy pops'? Surely it's acceptable to be 'twee' when you're 2

somuchforanindiansummer · 24/01/2013 14:33

I say 'trump' Grin

To me, fart is on a par with crap and tit (...any others...?!) Not proper swearing but not naice from a child either Grin

By the time he's four you'll be wishing he would say fart instead of "oh fuck" or "buggerit" or suchlike Wink

jeee · 24/01/2013 14:35

Could you not teach him to say 'flatulence'?

CheerfulYank · 24/01/2013 14:36

Our DS always said "toot". I'm with you, don't like fart from children either.

somuchforanindiansummer · 24/01/2013 14:36

Good point Pombear! Grin I hadn't thought of that...!

Yanbu

Fart is bleurgh and comon as fuck.

SoleSource · 24/01/2013 14:38

*common

FreudianLisp · 24/01/2013 14:38

What on earth is wrong with fart? It's not a swear word. Is your two-year-old supposed to say flatulence instead? Please don't call it some ridiculous made-up name instead.

chocoluvva · 24/01/2013 14:41

Why mention it at all other than to say 'Excuse me' ?

You don't go into the details of what you do every time when you go to the loo usually.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 24/01/2013 14:41

My youngest was on his nursery visit aged not quite three when he dropped something, put his hands on his hips, tilted his head, and said, very clearly, in clarion tones, beautifully enunciated "oh for fuck SAKE" Blush Blush

DragonMamma · 24/01/2013 14:42

It's definitely not a swear word. It's not my favourite word though and I'm not really keen on my DC's using it.

I say 'fluff' - 'have you fluffed?' Sounds much better than 'have you farted?' IMO

beautyguru · 24/01/2013 14:42

maybe i'm old fashioned but I don't like fart either from a toddler/child...I don't class it as swearing; more on a par with crap...but it just sounds horrible coming from a childs mouth. Def happier to hear trump/pump/parp etc.

OldBeanbagz · 24/01/2013 14:42

I completely agree with you OP. Fart is a horrible. They're bottom burps in our house.

chris481 · 24/01/2013 14:43

I taught DD (2.5) to say fart. It's not a swear word. She does laugh when she tells me "I fart" (hasn't mastered past tense.) I don't think I taught her it was funny.

EugenesAxe · 24/01/2013 14:44

YABU as far as I'm concerned. A 4 year old randomly asked if my DD came out of my tummy today, so I said 'Yes' - then he said 'How did you do that?', so I said 'I pushed... sort of like you do when you have a poo'.

The anecdote is to illustrate my attitude. Some people get sniffy about the book Pants - that has the word fart(y) in it; I've never really understood them.

snoopdogg · 24/01/2013 14:44

I'm with Pom. I was watching a film with my angelic four year old when a character said 'Where the hell are you?'

'That man sweared mummy'
'Yes darling'
'but he didn't say fucking'
.................sweet jesus

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/01/2013 14:44

I hate all the stupid euphemisms. DH still says toot and he is 41 yo. FFS.
