'Let's go and wind up some mums'

Aside from the deliberate and nasty trolling of the feminist board, what possesses people to come over here on the wind up?

Is it really that thrilling to get a load of potentially outraged responses from a load of strangers?

Wankers.

If MN wasn't so slow tonight, Zombie might have seen some of the fun. As it is she didn't.

what have you done, CG

c'mom, fess up, you will feel better Smile

ScrambledSmegs · 20/01/2013 22:16

Maybe they have mummy issues? They never got enough attention from their own, so they've come to get ours by acting up like brattish toddlers smearing the contents of their nappies over our walls.

LadyBeagleEyes · 20/01/2013 22:17

I wouldn't have been bothered if you'd been funny Canada, we've had some funny trolls on here.
Unfortunately you're not one of them.

baremadness · 20/01/2013 22:22

Yep all we talk about it cat shit and baking. There are no PEOPLE (I was gonna say women but men come there too) who are in violent relationships, suffering physical or mental health problems, have sick children, children with special needs.

Maybe you should read around a bit more and see that people do support each other through horrors that you could not possibly imagine. Have a look at some ofthe blanket threads. Then come back and tell us this place doesnt matter.

BiteTheTopsOffIcedGems · 20/01/2013 22:39

canadagoose you are a sarcastic wanker.

MurderOfGoths · 20/01/2013 22:47

Defensive much canadagoose?

HecateWhoopass · 21/01/2013 06:43

mumsnet doesn't matter is really saying the people here don't matter. Because 'mumsnet' is a bit of code in cyberspace. It is the people that are here that make mumsnet. The code doesn't give a shit, that's true. A bit of space on the WWW is only really important to the people who are making money from it Grin But how sly it always is to shrug and say that it doesn't matter cos it's only the internet/a forum. It's not real etc.

When it's people. People who are real. With feelings. Someone who says such things should at least have the guts to come right out and say it and not hide behind ridiculous claims. Just say it. "YOU don't matter. I don't know you. There are no consequences for me. I KNOW you are actual people and I enjoy what I do to you. It is a pleasure for me if I manage to get under your skin."

Because they won't ever have to face the people involved, they think that it's safe for them to be verbally (iyswim Grin ) abusive, that it's safe for them to pretend to be in all sorts of situations and have people waste their time and yes, sometimes share their own pain in the mistaken belief that it will help someone they think they can relate to.

It's a laugh, innit?

They do it because they can. And they do it knowing that it's other people they are doing it to.

That's why they do it. To mock and in some cases, to hurt. Cos they want to.

All the things they'd do to people face to face if it didn't mean they'd face consequences - such as a punch in the gob.

When you see someone on the net - you see the core of them. You get a glimpse of who they would be in life if there were no consequences for them. You really see who is a shit.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 21/01/2013 07:14

Great post, Hecate.

Poor MNHQ, they invented the deletion funnies to give us a bit of a giggle occasionally and now they have to be funny all the time Grin

Cortana · 21/01/2013 09:00

I would like the deletion to read "MNHQ agree with Hecate"

AnyFucker · 21/01/2013 09:05

Perhaps we could ask the person who is currently resurrecting old "my husband used escorts" threads the answer to this question. Mind you, the reason is clear here....to advertise escort sites

Morning. Have you reported this one, AnyF? We'd be most grateful if you could please...

AnyFucker · 21/01/2013 09:13

Helen, yep

GetOrf · 21/01/2013 10:24

Helen - I know it is a moot point and probably no. 865294 of the most important things in my life to worry about, but it is a bit annoying where a thread is deleted with an annoyed comment 'this was full of troll hunting'. It was full of people being exasperated, but I (and others presumably) reported it, and it actually was full of trolls. So people play by the rules and still feel like naughty children when we haven't actually done anything wrong. Just tried to have a conversation like normal people and avoid the complete lunchpackets who troll the site.

Yes, GetOrf, I'm glad you brought that up.

The wrong deletion message was put on that thread (unfortunately, at the moment, we have no way to retrieve and edit them if the wrong message is put out initially).

But, just fyi, we would always hope to say in the deletion message/in our post before deleting if we know the hairy of hand have been at work.

Apols for the cock-up last night.

amillionyears · 21/01/2013 10:33

I am still of the opinion, rightly or wrongly, that when a troll is suspected, that at least one person should say so.
to help some people like me, to be alert
I sometimes spot them, and occasionally before others, but other times dont spot them. [I am a bit of a mixed bag in this respect].

manicbmc · 21/01/2013 10:35

There have been so many over the weekend. I blame the weather and bored teens.

I reported a few threads and individuals yesterday.

No, that would SERIOUSLY break our site rules, amillionyears. Voicing the opinion that any poster is/may be a troll is trollhunting and breaks our Talk Guidelines.

It's not helpful for two reasons:

    1. If the poster under suspicion is not a troll, it can be hugely upsetting. Trollhunting of genuine MNers has happened, and we know from our inbox how hurtful this can be.
    1. Voicing your suspicions on the thread won't do anything to hasten the poster's removal from MN, if they are indeed a troll. The only way to make that happen (if it needs to happen) is to report the poster to us at MNHQ.
baremadness · 21/01/2013 10:42

Manic the most disturbing bit is that, from the contents of some of theor posts, i suspect that at least some of yesterdays little lovelies were in their 20s and 30s. Teens I can kind of understand...

Yes. Weird, huh? They should all be back under their bridges now, though, we hope. Please do report any possible stragglers to us.

MotherSuperiorHelenMumsnet · 21/01/2013 10:45

@AnyFucker

Helen, yep

Marvellous! Ta v much. #trollteamwork

amillionyears · 21/01/2013 10:46

Yes but...
Not meaning to be awkward, but when "troll" is called, it is normally right I would say 90% of the time. You obviously know the real figures on this.

so

  1. It stops giving lots of oxygen to a troll, which is what they want.
2.It stops posters wasting their time, energy, and in some cases, saying things they may not otherwise have revealed.
  1. I appreciate your point one, but I think the advantages of just one person calling troll outweigh the disadvantages. And if the poster was genuine, sometimes others can see it and carrying on posting. And after time, everyone would know the rules including genuine posters, and hopefully shouldnt get too upset.

Obviously this is your call.
But tbh, having troll after troll on your site, can get a bit upset for the thousands of genuine posters on your site too.

GetOrf · 21/01/2013 10:48

Thanks very much Helen.
