To call emergency Gas line?

Boiler is ancient, cant afford new one just yet. But around 7 pm i could smell a burning smell (like a leccy heater was on) Coming from boiler, I just walked in there about ten mins ago and could very strongly smell a gas burning smell. So I have switched it all off and rung the 0800 gas emergency number someone is coming out. DH thinks Im being silly :(

Not silly at all, absolutely right thing to do.

Julezboo · 19/01/2013 21:09

Safer to call but it may be electric which is causing the problem.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/01/2013 21:11

Absolutely the right thing to do.

If you can smell gas, that's what you're supposed to do.

kalidanger · 19/01/2013 21:16

I've had to do this twice - once for gas (I'd knocked the knob on the hob Blush) and another for electricity as the metre smelt of burning and was making a fizzing sound Shock

Both times a van full of nice young men came and fixed things/were polite about me being stupid. Your DH can shut his face about silliness. A GAS BURNING SMELL is precisely what these services are for. Can he fix it? Go and kick him.

Julezboo · 19/01/2013 21:24

lol I am tempted. He said we should turn it off and deal with it tomorrow. I have 3 young boys in the house, one with asthma. Im not too well myself tbh! Cant be doing without heating!

MikeLitoris · 19/01/2013 21:28

Make sure you have a window open (I know and dont turn on the lights or use your mobile in there. Has he turned the gas off?

And obviously no smoking!

Dh is being silly. You can never be too cautious with gas safety.

wornoutbutstillwonderful · 19/01/2013 21:28

You done the right thing, I could smell gas and rang the emrrgency number, turned out I had a gas leak in main pipe that ran under the house wasn't great with 3 dc one of ehich was a baby but it is better to be safe than sorry.

lubeybooby · 19/01/2013 21:30

All the engineer will do is make safe by switching gas meter off or worst case scenario condemning boiler.

Gas doesn't have a burning kind of smell so sounds maybe electrical.

You will need to get a gas safe registered engineer/plumber out to fix it.

lubeybooby · 19/01/2013 21:31

you have done the right thing though - gas appliances are not to be chanced with ever

kalidanger · 19/01/2013 21:33

Just remembered; it was Xmas last year for my electricity problem (We were watching A Muppet Christmas Carol) and one team in a van diagnosed the problem then within an hour another team came and changed the meter. It's a fantastic service - and it has to be because gas leaks/electricity fails kill houses full of people

Julezboo · 19/01/2013 22:09

It was a carbon monoxide leak. They have shut boiler off. We need to get someone out to service/clean it.

We have one tiny heater. Anyone have an idea of how much it costs? So I can figure out how much money I need to raise! Payday isnt until fri? Sods Law x

MikeLitoris · 19/01/2013 22:12

No idea sorry.

Am very glad you called them though.

DragonMamma · 19/01/2013 22:16

A service is around £100 iirc but obviously if there's a leak then you'll probably need to pay for some kind of repairs, possibly a new boiler.

Where in S Wales are you? I'm from there and have a couple of leccy heaters you could have for the time being?

nannynick · 19/01/2013 22:21

Good to hear you have had it checked. Not so good to hear it was a carbon monoxide leak for which you had a detector yet that detector did not show there being a problem (I am presuming you had looked at the detector). Makes you wonder if those detectors work or if they only work in certain positions and after a certain build up of carbon monoxide.

Do try to keep warm.

Julezboo · 19/01/2013 22:25

Dragonmamma Im in Bridgend Valleys. We are snowed in pretty much. I will ask neighbours tomorrow and mil as we can walk to hers.

Detector is brand new, well be replaced the old one just before xmas. Apparently they only go off when there is a lot of poison in the air!

Mintyy · 19/01/2013 22:27

Of course yanbu! You can smell gas in the house. Strange question.

DragonMamma · 19/01/2013 22:30

I'm in the next valley along so let me know if you do need them, we have pretty bad snow here too.

mynameisnowsonicthehedgehog · 19/01/2013 22:34

Intriged as to why your carbon monoxide monitor didn't detect it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 19/01/2013 22:37

Lucky you smelled something because carbon monoxide doesn't smell.

Thank goodness you did though! Is DH suitably humbled?

starfishmummy · 19/01/2013 22:40

Also intrigued about the smell - carbon dioxide doesn't smell, which is why we have detectors.
But better to be safe than sorry.
