to think clothes with hoods for young babies are absolutely ridiculous? (not including coats obviously).

Why does everything in the baby section seem to have a hood recently?

If a baby is lying on the floor or slouched in a bouncer they won't want a hood scrunched up at the back.

And if they're indoors they won't want a hood up!

Bit ranty and judgy pants of me but I just don't get it.

I want some traditional cheap cardigans for ds .... apart from spending quite a lot or searching few and far between most things seem to have a hood.

Sigh.

I quite liked things with hoods because our house was always chilly and it looked a bit less wanky than a hat. But big chunky hoods are silly, I'll give you that.

wigglesrock · 16/01/2013 18:45

I like it Blush, I found it really difficult getting my kids into coats (I mean actually putting them in them) when they were babies. So I would double up with cardigans/blankets etc and a hooded cardigan meant I could put their hood up going out. I always found that hats slipped forward on mine whereas a hoodie didn't.

Have you looked at Asda/Sainsburys?

silverfrog · 16/01/2013 18:47

I hate them too, especially for tiny newborns.

I always worry about them in car seats - hood up, and risk overheating, hood down and really uncomfortable...

Picturesinthefirelight · 16/01/2013 18:48

I found hoodies cardigans really really useful especially in soring& autumn when it was too chilly for a top but not enough for a coat. Also on really cold days the hoods stayed up better than goat hoods.

Mil knitted a load for us.

sweetestB · 16/01/2013 18:50

They make it for the chavvi babies market dontcha know.?

DreamingOfAWhiteChristmas · 16/01/2013 18:51

Yes, I agree, why does a tiny newborn want to lie on a big hood?!

Useful in spring and Autumn maybe, but mine are mostly in snowsuits/pramsuits, so it does just double up the bulkiness... I have a couple of non hooded from m&s.

coughingbean · 16/01/2013 18:52

i find them really annoying as they are way to big for my LOs head and flop over her eyes!

Fairylea · 16/01/2013 18:55

By the way I'm being a bit lighthearted ... I'm not passing judgement on babies wearing them looks wise :)

I just find it odd that everyone is so concerned about over heating etc and yet they put hoods on sleepsuits and cardigans and everything else!

Maybe I'm a bit silly... obviously.judging from the replies others find them ok..

I just know ds would be really uncomfortable.

I have got a few normal cardigans from all over the place.... just noticed loads and loads of things with hoods creeping in since I have had ds (now 7 months).

Hoods don't slip off. DS is 7 months and for the last 3 it has been cold. Hoods have been excellent.

We have quite a warm house so don't really do cardigans at all unless going out, in which case an extra layer on the head is great. Don't do hats here though.

WhatchuTalkinBoutPhyllis · 16/01/2013 18:55

Put them in a babygro. Problem solved.

StarlightMcKenzie · 16/01/2013 18:56
Booyhoo · 16/01/2013 18:57

radical idea i know but had you thought of taking the jumper/cardigan off indoors?

Flisspaps · 16/01/2013 18:57

We really struggled to find non-hooded cardigans for 9mo DS this year. Primark and Tesco had some in.

thesnowmanrocks · 16/01/2013 18:58

Trying to find stuff for my ds4 that doesn't have a hood is hard. Thinking back when he was younger it was still hard then. Would just like one without a flipping hood. So i don't think you are and on young babies its just plain silly.

silverfrog · 16/01/2013 18:59

it's freezing in our house, so ds needs a jumper on most days.

but then, being only 6 months, he quite likes a nap or two during the day.

and sleeping in a hood is deemed a big no-no.

therein lies the problem...

YorkshireDeb · 16/01/2013 18:59

I kind of see your point - but secretly love hoods with little ears on. (Does that make me a chav?). Fairylea what kind of traditional cardigans are you looking for? I hand quite a few hand knitted when ds was born that I could send to you? X

PurplePidjin · 16/01/2013 19:00

They're useful in a sling to protect the bit between hat and collar. Pretty useless otherwise, i agree.

Find a local knitting shop and have someone make you some, i have tonnes from my knitting group/mum and gran's friends!

ThalianotFailure · 16/01/2013 19:04

I agree, when they are lying all the time a hood is just uncomfortable. Fine once they are sitting.

StarlightMcKenzie · 16/01/2013 19:04

If ds falls asleep with his hood on, I just move him near a door or to a cold bit of the house.

TheRealMrsSmith · 16/01/2013 19:04

Op I had the same issue. Wanted some reasonably priced cardigans for DD but without a hood to wear over a babygro. don't mind the hooded type when we're going out and about but when we're at home she doesn't need a hood just the cardigan. The only one I found was in M&S so I ended up having some knitted for her by a friend. YANBU

DoItToJulia · 16/01/2013 19:05

Omg, YANBU at all. My newborn has outgrown the single cardigan I could find with no hood for his age.

I went shopping today specifically for cotton-y cardigans with no hood, as it has gone so cold. I came away from mothercare with just one flimsy cheap cardigan. One. Every single thing else had hoods.

My mum was with me and I don't think she had believed me before when I told her how difficult it was to find hood free cardis. I actually said "surely we aren't the only people who don't want a hood scrunched up under the baby's head?".

What's it all about? I am totally with you and can't actually believe you have started a thread about it.....brilliant.

Vertically · 16/01/2013 19:20

H&M is your friend when it comes to cardies and jumpers without hoods. Just had a look on their website and they have quite a few different designs girls and boys.

Fairylea · 16/01/2013 19:27

Thanks for the tips and offers .. you're all very kind :) ... I will look at h and m, hadn't thought of them.

I would take them off indoors but our house is cold so ds needs one on all the time unless I want to take out a loan to pay the heating bill!

Interesting to see others are thinking the same as me!

I can see when the weather gets more autumny (made up my own word there) they would be useful instead of a coat. Maybe I'll eat my words then... but I don't want anything indoorsy with a hood at the moment.

Slightly off topic but just as useless... I bought a coat for dd when she was about six months old and was quite amused to find that it had an inside pocket. Any suggestions as to what babies need to keep in inside pockets? Fags? Mobile? Keys?

Fairylea · 16/01/2013 19:35

Ahhh yes!! Pockets!!

Perfect for car keys.. at 6months old :)
