To think Sex & the City films ruined the series?

Probably done before, but I'm in bed ill and just watched the 2nd film again.

Now I loved S&TC the series, it was fantastic. Great characters, great writing and storylines. It ended on a complete high where the ratings for the show hadn't declined and they could have easily churned out a couple more series.

Then I watched the first film .... and thought yeah that's ok.

Then I watched the second film ... and thought what the actual hell is this crap?!

But I'm being unreasonable because I know for a fact if a third film was ever made I'd still go to the cinema to see it Grin

Yanbu. Especially about the second film. Complete guff.

atthewelles · 16/01/2013 13:30

The second film was absolutely woeful and was panned by the critics. The whole point of the series was the single girl in New York lifestyle and the fab clothes. A bunch of middle aged married women capering around the Far East in crazy gear bore no relation to the original premise.
And please don't start me on that Irish nanny...........

LucilleBluth · 16/01/2013 13:36

Both films were complete and utter shite, the second one more so.

I loved the TV show, it was of 'my time' so to speak, even though I was in my early 20's and the characters in their 30's. Carrie was a self absorbed whiny pain in the arse but the TV episodes were must see TV, there was nothing like it at the time, it was quite shocking I think.....to hear women talk like they did.

StuntGirl · 16/01/2013 13:41

I always thought I liked Sex and the City 'til I bought the boxset and watched it all Grin Could they have been any more unlikeable? Only saw the first film at the behest of a friend, had definitely stopped caring by the second. Absolute self-indulgent guff.

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 16/01/2013 13:43

The seccond film was painful to watch

Bue · 16/01/2013 13:46

I finally saw the second film last weekend. Tragic.

SallyCinnamonandNutmeg · 16/01/2013 13:46

YANBU. Series great for the time (although agree with Stuntgirl and Lucille that with hindsight Carrie is perhaps one of the most irritating self-obsessed characters ever to exist even though I loved her at the time!)

Really liked 1st film.

2nd was ABSOLUTELY BLOODY AWFUL!!!!!!

GregBishopsBottomBitch · 16/01/2013 13:47

Carrie, Whiny, moaned about not commitment, then had Aiden, who wanted to commit, but she was a bitch and dumped him.

Miranda Self absorbed, workaholic, control freak with no sense of humour.

Samantha A little annoying, but what you see is what you get.

Charlotte Annoying, Naive, always talking about "The One", but otherwise she was ok.

Thats just my opinion on the characters.

dreamingbohemian · 16/01/2013 13:54

I watched the series when it was originally on, when I was young and single, and really liked it.

Watched more recently on box set and found myself often thinking, god these women are so fucking annoying.

I can't figure out which opinion is unreasonable Grin maybe I'm just old and grumpy now!

TidyDancer · 16/01/2013 13:56

The first film was actually really good, but the second one was dire in comparison. As a standalone film it's okay to watch, but it's truly awful compared to the TV series and the first one.

cozietoesie · 16/01/2013 13:57

I actually quite enjoyed the second film - just for the challenge of clocking all the cosmetic procedures on all of the existing characters. I think I got them all.

Spero · 16/01/2013 14:05

I don't think they ruined the series, but they did make me very sad because it showed that the people who created the series didn't understand what they had and why it was good. SJP was apparently shocked at the reaction to the 2nd film but it was just so appalling on every level - the Samantha character became a truly grotestque characture.

the series I thought was brilliant because it got quite dark at time and explored loads of issues - death, abortion, loneliness. Those who dismissed it as just fluff about shoes I don't think can ever have watched it. The characters could be annoying, but I think that is testament to how well it was written. They could be awful, then turn it around.

sooperdooper · 16/01/2013 14:07

The whole thing is crap, can't watch it, makes my teeth itch, load of crap

I'm sure sometimes I must be a man Hmm I just don't get it

AngryTrees · 16/01/2013 14:10

I think it was getting older that ruined the show for me a bit. But there are good bits. I watched an episode recently- the one where Carrie needs to buy back her flat. I was nodding along when Charlotte told Carrie that she was a thirty-five year old woman and had to learn to look after her own finances and stand on her own, rather than expecting Charlotte to bail her out. I loved that someone finally said something about her stupid spending on clothes and maxing out credit cards.

StuntGirl · 16/01/2013 14:11

I think it did something good at the time, which was to show that actually, women talk about sex too and even like sex.

But it was so abysmal on every level, it showed men AND women in a truly terrible light.

Flossiechops · 16/01/2013 14:12

I absolutely loved the series and don't care what any of you say Grin I quite enjoyed the first movie but they should have left it there. The second was awful!

Nancy66 · 16/01/2013 14:14

The second film was terrible - all that poncing through the desert in designer clothes.

Lottapianos · 16/01/2013 14:17

I loved it on TV and have the box set - I still watch it but have very mixed feelings about it now. Some of the writing is truly woeful and Carrie and Charlotte are mostly unbearable. The clothes are (mostly) truly wonderful mind you! I love aspects of Samatha's character - she is totally opposed to getting married and having children and refuses to compromise on that for even a second. That point of view is really refreshing and sorely under-represented on TV and in film.

I thought Film 1 was ghastly - Carrie's emotional abuser Mr Big finally gives in and marries her when he gets the wedding he wants, after breaking her heart for approximately the 1000th time. Sod her feelings, yet again. He is a vile rotten character and I loathe how he was made out to be Prince Charming. Vomit.

Film 2 - just unspeakable.

Please let there not be a Film 3 Confused

Lottapianos · 16/01/2013 14:18

Yes to this. Carrie does behave like a child with her want-want-want attiude to shoes and clothes and not having a shilling to her name in that episode.

Nancy66 · 16/01/2013 14:23

The thing that always bothered me in the TV series was that the friendships were not convincing.

I can see that Carrie and Samantha would be friends. I can see that Carrie and Miranda would be. But Miranda would never be pals with someone like Samantha and there's no way ANY of them would have anything in common with a prudish, immature, princess like Charlotte.

Lottapianos · 16/01/2013 14:28

Oh, just thought of something else I loathed about Film 1:

Miranda got the blame for
a) her husband cheating on her
b) Mr Big ditching Carrie on their wedding day

Just what the actual jeff is that all about????

Nancy66, that's an interesting point about the friendships, I hadn't thought of it before. I just accepted them all as friends but you're right that Charlotte has little or nothing in common with any of them.

MeganMascara · 16/01/2013 14:31

I found the friendship unconvincing between the other three, as everything revolved around Carrie. For example when Miranda chose Carrie to be Godmother to her son when in my opinion she should have chosen Charlotte.

Carrie's emotional abuser Mr Big finally gives in and marries her when he gets the wedding he wants, after breaking her heart for approximately the 1000th time. Sod her feelings, yet again. He is a vile rotten character and I loathe how he was made out to be Prince Charming. Vomit.

This. ^

I cannot stand Big. He had already got married twice and presumable both large and fancy weddings, this was Carrie's first marriage and wedding but she wasn't allowed to have a big wedding because he'd already done it twice.

And then jilting her anyway!!

OP posts:
GregBishopsBottomBitch · 16/01/2013 14:34

I thought Big was a twat, he messed her up big time, if Carrie was a real person on here, we'd being LTB'ing all over the place. I think Aiden was the right person for Carrie.

Nancy66 · 16/01/2013 14:34

yeah but he copy and pasted a load of love letters so that makes up for the jilting...

Seabird72 · 16/01/2013 14:35

oh dear - I liked the 2nd film!!! I hated the 1st. I was expecting so much more and it wasn't too long after the series had ended but I found it really annoying all the Mr Big problems approaching the wedding day blah blah - fine for a 20-25 min episode but so boring for the length of a film. By the time I got around to watching the 2nd movie I as watching it more as a stand alone movie rather than having any kind of expectations as to how much I'd enjoyed the tv series - apart from the Irish nanny (played by Trevor Eves DD?) I thought it was ok - Samantha getting them all into more trouble but in a foreign country - when I see repeats of the series I do admit it's not as good as watching it the first time. Isn't Carrie just meant to be the glue that holds them all together?? She was the least likeable character though imo.
