to find man-handled food gross?

Just saw Jamie on tv. He was fondling the meatballs, caressing the tomatoes and generally getting very personal with the food.

not sure he washed his hands either

AIBU to find it gross when the cook touches the food a lot. And even more gross when they double dip while tasting their concoction?

YANBU- especially about Jamie. I always think he needs a good old scrub himself!

EuroShagmore · 14/01/2013 14:04

I don't mind them touching food. I wish they would take off their wedding rings those. The thought of all the nasties trapped around it makes me .

Flatbread · 14/01/2013 14:09

Agree Jamie looks like he needs a scrub.

Euro, never thought about rings...wouldn't a hot soapy handwash get rid of lurking germs?

I wonder why they don't promote more hygiene and cleanliness on tv cooking shows? E.g., show the chef wearing an apron and hat. And washing the produce and their hands regularly?

It always makes me wonder when I hear people moaming about double-dipping food, obvis whether you actually mind doing the snogging?

Confused

YANBU

Jamie does look grubby. But he's not the worst. Hugh Fernley whatever is disgusting. His hair is always a big lump of grease, close ups of his hands show what looks like soil under his nails and he just looks filthy. Like a tramp. I bet he stinks too.
His kitchen always looks dirty. I don't know how anyone can eat his food. Mind you, his friends always look filthy too.

magicstar1 · 14/01/2013 14:18

Delia Smith's hands actually make me feel sick...there's something about her that means I wouldn't eat anything she touched. I do love her recipes though!

FayeKorgasm · 14/01/2013 14:31

I really agree. It is gross.

Not as bad as open self serve salad bars in supermarkets. It is just nasty. Oh yes, the uncovered muffins counters in petrol stations. Horrible, nasty things.

Shudder!

Flatbread · 14/01/2013 14:34

Oh yes, Hugh what's-his-names looks very greasy. And his recipes seem uninspiring as well.

Never noticed Delia's hands really Grin. But it does seem her kitchen is super clean.

Seeing the tv chefs and CDWM contestants, I can only conclude that most people have really poor hygiene.

-don't wear aprons or hats
-don't wash hands or remove rings before kneading

  • don't wash produce
-don't wash cutting boards and knifes between chopping different foods -double dip while tasting -have animals in kitchen -serve food that has been dropped on the kitchen floor -touch and fondle food instead of using utensils

I am not ocd at all. But surely these tv cooks must be a minority...aren't most people more careful around food?

Don't ever go hang out in a restaurant kitchen. You'll never eat out again.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2013 14:40

YANBU. They can't leave it alone can they? Any excuse to get their hands in it and modge it all about. Sad

ResolutelyCheeky · 14/01/2013 14:58

myfirst you have a way with words, that really made me belly laugh Grin

aftermay · 14/01/2013 15:04

I've become quite squeamish about take-always and restaurants. I just don't trust enough hand washing is going on.

usualsuspect · 14/01/2013 15:07

How do you suggest people in restaurants etc prepare food without touching it?

Flatbread · 14/01/2013 15:23

I am pretty careful about food.

The takeaways I rely on, I can see the chef in the kitchen

I never order soups or salads. Too much potential for "stuff"

Generally avoid buffets and open food bars and exposed muffins, samosas, croissants whatever. Too many people breathing, coughing, handling the food

I try to eat in restaurants which have an open kitchen or a chef behind a glass wall

I am nice to waitstaff so hopefully they don't spit in my food Grin

usual, normal handling with washed hands is ok. But the amount of unnecessary fondling on these tv shows puts me right off the meal.

YANBU

You should ask restaurants to autoclave your food between the kitchen and your table.

Do you wash meat too? :)

Trills · 14/01/2013 15:34

How do you make meatballs without rolling them in your hands? Confused

Lueji · 14/01/2013 15:36

You do it in a cat 4 facility, wearing a protective suit with gloves, of course.

Flatbread · 14/01/2013 15:42

Trills,

Thoroughly washed hands. A quick roll between the palms and then down on a clean surface.

No fondling, squeezing or rubbing is required

I know I know!!! Delias hands look clammy and limp, like they belong to a deceased person but she's stuck them on to herself!
I love her recipes though Grin

bedmonster · 14/01/2013 16:06

But flatbread, you need to squeeze and compact then to get the air out. They need to be dense. If you just gently roll them they'll be crap!

magicstar1 · 14/01/2013 16:08

I'm so glad you said that....nobody else ever understood why I can't stand them....you described it perfectly!

monsterchild · 14/01/2013 16:09

I have to tell you, I worked in a restaurant that was not terribly clean. It wasn't the dirtiest, but some of what happened was shocking to me. However, no one ever got sick (there was no spitting in food, BTW, just sketchy hygiene). so I'm pretty sure most places are ok, and most cooks/chefs are pretty good about this stuff.

the dirty kitchen I worked in I could only work there about 2 days and I quit. It later burned down, probably a grease fire.

BupcakesAndCunting · 14/01/2013 16:11

"I wonder why they don't promote more hygiene and cleanliness on tv cooking shows? E.g., show the chef wearing an apron and hat. And washing the produce and their hands regularly?"

Oh God. My mum is a chef and she is always squeaking about Nigella's hair handging everywhere etc etc.

They don't have to comply with kitchen hygiene regulations because they aren't serving it up to the general public. They're doing a cookery demonstration. Nobody is going to eat it (except maybe the chef/crew) Can you imagine how off-putting it would be seeing the telly chefs in those ridiculous white gauze pork-pie hats/white safety clogs?!

Carry on lettinf your hair dangle, Nigella!

usualsuspect · 14/01/2013 16:14

I work in catering, there are strict laws about hygiene.

The EHO inspects the premises regularly.

TV chefs are not actually working in catering are they?

ShatnersBassoon · 14/01/2013 16:14

Cookery shows would be really boring if we had to watch them cleaning surfaces and washing hands. Assume professional cooks are as aware of food hygiene as the average home cook and that they had the Dettol out before the cameras started rolling.
