This woman I know through a friend is currently 5 or 6 months pregnant.

Before she was pregnant she owned a dog, rabbit and guinea pig.

And since she has got pregnant she has bought 2 more guinea pigs, and I have just seen on facebook that she has bought herself a new puppy too.

All together she has 6 pets, 2 of which are dog which are demanding pets - need to be walked every day etc.

Fair enough that she had three of them before she was pregnant but to get the last three after she found out ?? ... aibu to think this is irresponsible?

  • I am prepared to be flamed, but it would be interesting to hear views on this.

Sounds crackers to me but then I'm not an animal person. Maybe she feels she can handle it.

I'm not going to flame you because you're just using your judgement Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/01/2013 11:35

Yabu It's none of your business. She can walk the dogs with the baby.

akaemmafrost · 14/01/2013 11:36

I've got two kids with SN, one quite significant, I am a lone parent, I also have a dog, two guinea pigs and a fish, was two but one died. Is that ok?

Somehow I manage.

Not sure what it has to do with you actually.

Twattybollocks · 14/01/2013 11:36

She may not realise how much work is inv

Aspiemum2 · 14/01/2013 11:36

Yabu, not sure what the pregnancy has to do with it. I know a lot of people seem to think they can't cope with pets the minute they find out they're pregnant but as someone with 4dcs and heaps of pets it really is no big deal. I have 8 month old twins and considering some piggies Grin

quoteunquote · 14/01/2013 11:36

Presumable the dogs don't get walked separately, so no change there,

I have had a lot of pregnancies, none got in the way of any animal husbandry.

AlienReflux · 14/01/2013 11:37

YABU to not have anything else to bloody worry about

Itsnotahoover · 14/01/2013 11:38

When I first had ds, I had 3 dogs, 2 horses and a cat. I coped. You are being judgy.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 14/01/2013 11:38

Blimey, she's going to have her hands full when the baby comes along!

MadCap · 14/01/2013 11:39

Yabu, I'm sure she thinks she can manage it. Can't be arsed to link to studies, but children who grow up in houses with pets are healthier, have better immune systems, less allergies, etc., besides learning compassion, empathy, responsibility, etc.

sparkle12mar08 · 14/01/2013 11:40

Are you mad?! Why on earth wouldn't it be okay?! And I say that as a confirmed anti pet person, personally ...

wigglesrock · 14/01/2013 11:41

So she's got 2 dogs, 3 guinea pigs and a rabbit? Its hardly a petting zoo is it? I loved having my dog when I had my children, got me out of the house nice and quickly and meant that I had to get out for walks even when I couldn't be arsed.

CrackerJackShack · 14/01/2013 11:41

I got cat number 5 two weeks before I gave birth...Not sure why its your business.

StraightTalkinSheila · 14/01/2013 11:41

YABVU. I'm sure she realises the responsibilities of owning a pet as she already has a dog. I think you are being extremely judgy and a little bit weird about the whole thing.

valiumredhead · 14/01/2013 11:42

She'll have her hands full for sure!

FrustratedSycamoreIsNesting · 14/01/2013 11:42

Not sure how 2 extra guinea pigs makes a difference.

As for the dog, she already has one, so is walking and caring for it daily, she obviously knows what it involves. I can't see that another one will be too much of a culture shock for her, it's not as though she's suddenly got her 1st puppy, she's already caring for a dog whilst pregnant, and I'm sure she'll manage once she's had the baby.

kinkyfuckery · 14/01/2013 11:43

Why wouldn't it be ok? I'd assume she'll walk both dogs at the same time!

VegasShowGirl · 14/01/2013 11:44

I just think it's just a lot to take on getting a puppy so close to giving birth (it's her first btw) when you already have so many pets.

I guess I am just being judgmental.

I've just seen situations like this before, where a woman I know (who has 3 DC's) bought a puppy not long after she gave birth to her third and they then got rid of the puppy because he was too jumpy.

foreversunny · 14/01/2013 11:46

My idea of a nightmare but each to their own and all that so YBU.

My friend and her DH purchased a puppy when she was 37 weeks pregnant with their first. She's admitted that they're struggling now with a 4 month old baby and a very demanding puppy and they both regret doing it.

StraightTalkinSheila · 14/01/2013 11:47

She's five or six months pregnant, you've stated. That's hardly about to drop, is it? Is,there another issue that bothers you with this woman?

VegasShowGirl · 14/01/2013 11:48

Oh well maybe I'm being too judgmental because of other things surrounding the circumstances which I fear would be drip feeding now - drugs, depression related etc.

But it's not my place to judge - IABU.

OP posts:
Frikadellen · 14/01/2013 11:50

If it is her first then yes I think she has under estimated how much time a puppy and a baby will take.

I see people do it I don't wish to be one of them we have 3 aquariums thats hard enough laughs

VegasShowGirl · 14/01/2013 11:50

kinkyfuckery

Why wouldn't it be ok? I'd assume she'll walk both dogs at the same time!

I know I mentioned dog walking in my OP but obviously that was just an example of how a dog is a demanding pet. There are obviously other things involved to - owning dogs isn't just about taking them for a walk in the park.

OP posts:
CaseyShraeger · 14/01/2013 11:51

She's got four months or so to go before she gives birth -- very different from getting a puppy just afterwards. She won't have to do any more walking than she already has to do, or spend any appreciably greater time feeding or cleaning out the guinea pigs.
