To be a geeky Doctor Who fan?

Geekster · 13/01/2013 21:12

I am a massive Doctor Who fan hence my user name. I have all the stories on DVD or video, have most of the books which have been well read. Subscribe to Doctor Who Magazine and am a member of The Doctor Who Appreciation Society and have had a couple of articles I've written published in their magazine. My DH can't understand my love of it, he tolerates the new episodes but refuses to watch any of the older ones. He is away at the moment so I'm having a Doctor Who marathon.

Please tell me I'm still 'normal'.

I attempted to educate my DS in the loveliness and wonder of classic Who, he has now announced that the very best Doctor of all is Sylvester McCoy. Not sure what happened there Sad

Does that make me eligible to join the geek club?

Itchywoolyjumper · 13/01/2013 23:05

I with you Geekster Grin
PoulterGoose, Peter Davidson was my doctor and I never liked the actor who came after him either. Tom Baker was marvelous though.

CaseyShraeger · 13/01/2013 23:16

The arcs and ideas of the later Sylvester McCoy years were some of the best. Sadly they were let down by ridiculously low budgets, some stunt casting and a "16 year old" assistant who looked like the late-20s year old she was.

Itchywoolyjumper · 13/01/2013 23:24

I've got a soft spot for Sylvester McCoy's doctor too and Ace was my favourite assistant, she was so sparky. I really hated Bonnie Langford's effort so Sophie Aldred was a breath of fresh air. I didn't realise she was supposed to be 16, though that does make more sense.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/01/2013 23:29

I did feel very sorry for Sylvester McCoy when the new Who started and made a huge thing out of finally solving the daleks' issues with stairs - that bit in Remembrance Of The Daleks was surely his finest ever moment!

Way better than anything in Ghost Light anyway..

CaseyShraeger · 13/01/2013 23:33

Yes; actually, if I'd missed the explanation of how old Ace was supposed to be I probably wouldn't have minded her at all. As it was I spent two years bitterly muttering to myself about quite how much she didn't look like a teenager...

KentuckyFriedChildren · 13/01/2013 23:37

I've never seen Dr Who. What's it all abaaat? Dh went to school with Karen Gillan though. Saw her not long ago I think she's moved back to Inverness.

Tweasels · 13/01/2013 23:38

I'm a Doctor Who geek too.

DS and I watched 7 episodes back to back today. He's poorly and has been on the sofa under his duvet all day. I have no excuse.

YesAnastasia · 13/01/2013 23:40

waves geeky hand I'm a fan. But a resent one because my family weren't when I was growing up. I even went to see David Tennant at the RSC (twice) at the height of my obsession. (alright, I was going anyway...)

I'm not AS keen since the departure of Russell T Davies but I still really enjoy it. I love (yes, love) the new companion, Clara Oswin (?) - the souffle episode was brill - but I could still mist up about Rose.

I loved Buffy & Angel & lots of other geeky stuff too.

Geekster · 13/01/2013 23:42

That's a claim to fame going to university with Tat Wood, got some of the books he has written about Doctor Who.

Tweasels you were keeping your DS company obviously. Which episodes did you watch?

Geekster · 13/01/2013 23:44

Our DD had got the name of one of the companions, was coincidence that I happen to love this name honest!

ChameleonCircuit · 13/01/2013 23:47

Another out and proud geek here, too. Smile

Tweasels · 13/01/2013 23:49

Today we watched the 3rd David Tennant series, which out of the newer lot is the only one DS hadn't seen.

Have just checked his temperature and I doubt he'll be going to school tomorrow so more of the same Grin

LittleBlueBox · 13/01/2013 23:49

As you can probably tell from my nn I'm another Who fan. Wink

Was terribly ashamed of it as a kid in the 7th Doctor years. I used to tape all the episodes on vhs and label them Oh Wrot Cod (Doctor Who backward) in the incredibly clever hope that no-one in my family would be able to decipher the code and realise my obsession. Blush

I embrace the geek life now though. Who, Buffy, Firefly, Battlestar, GoT. I'm proud that these are the elements of pop culture that appeal to me. I'd much rather spend my time rewatching Serenity than mainlining The Biggest Loser or whatever.

Geekster · 13/01/2013 23:51

Another good user name, that was the only thing I disliked about the Paul McGann episode was when they called it the cloaking device

MattSmithIsMine · 14/01/2013 00:10

Another geek here. I've converted my 6 yr old DS into a fan too, so I get to watch Series 2-7 on a regular basis. Love, love, love Matt Smith!

SolidGoldFrankensteinandmurgh · 14/01/2013 00:15

I was at school with Ace and she was a cow not really Soph if you are reading And my DS loves Dr Who and I am quite fond of the series myself. Better that than X-factor or Jeremy Kyle or all the other things that mundanes like.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 14/01/2013 00:45

yanbu

dr who is brilliant!! Grin

have you been to the exhibition in cardiff yet?

laraeo · 14/01/2013 00:49

Stateside Doctor fan here. I started with Tom Baker and really enjoyed Peter Davison. The past few months have found me rediscovering the "new" Who and thanks to Netflix I'm now up to date and ready for the new season.

My DH is mortified because he's got a business trip to London coming up in May and I've tasked him with buying me the stamps being issued for the 50th anniversary Grin.

I definitely enjoyed David Tennant way too much and Matt Smith is growing on me. I really disliked Amy & Rory so that sort of colored my view of him. I think I'm going to enjoy Clara more and hope her backstory stays intriguing.

DS is a little young for Who (he turns 5 next month) but he's already obsessed by Star Wars even though he's never seen it! He's got his Halloween costumes picked out for the next 3 years - Yoda, Darth Vader, R2D2. He then plans to repeat them.

I'm still not sure how I feel about how "mainstream" it's become here. In some ways it's good, i.e. Netflix availability, but it's still disconcerting to have Matt Smith on the cover of my cheesy Entertainment Weekly magazine and have it as a #1 on their top 10 weekly things for The Snowman.

Strangest thing was I've got a David Tennant iPhone case and was listening to an audiobook during some nose surgery (don't ask - wear sunscreen!) when the nurse wanted to know what I was listening too and it turned out he was a Who fan too! Made the suturing go a bit easier.

ll31 · 14/01/2013 01:08

Was\am dr who fan but have transferred my allegiance to torchwood-absolutely brilliant!

CaseyShraeger · 14/01/2013 01:34

You see, I really liked Rory. For the first time in a good while we had a companion in the TARDIS who wasn't there because they thought the Doctor was marvellous or even because they had a burning desire to travel through time and space, and that gave him a different take on some of the Doctor's actions and some of the stuff that happened. We need companions who are interesting (TBH I would like another nice Turlough-like arc for someone) and I hope Clara fits the bill.

BunFagFreddie · 14/01/2013 02:03

How could liking Doctor Who ever be unreasonable?

Dawndonna · 14/01/2013 10:48

Geekster I threw that in there not expecting any sort of reply, but if you know of Tat, you really are a Geekster! Grin

ps. I know his real name! Grin

manicbmc · 14/01/2013 11:01

As well as Doctor Who, I have the complete Babylon 5 series on dvd as well as the follow up, Crusade.

Dd is a massive Who fan too.

SamuelWestsMistress · 14/01/2013 11:09

Aaaaah I think mumsnet should have its own Who Talk section!
