To want to stab middle aged women who upspeak

I think I'm right on this but DH says I am being unreasonable. It makes my teeth itch listening to them, I cannot hear what they are saying because I am waiting for the next inappropriate voice rise. There was one on R4 a few minutes ago and I had to turn her off.

It's bad enough when young people do it, usually with a load of 'like's thrown in for good measure.

God I hate dieting after Christmas!

I totally do this Blush although I'm not yet middle aged, so does that mean it's ok?

I blame it on having lived in a french speaking country, as they do the same when asking questions.

nothing to do with my addiction to home and away and neighbours as a teenager, oh no

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:11

I just expect better of my fellow middle aged women. The rest of the population, pah, they will do as they will.

Yes rule, it does sound patronising, maybe that's why it makes me feel stabby.

Gin, it's fine if you are actually asking a question, it's not fine if you are just making a statement.

Oh!

Please tell me it wasn't Winifred. I love her voice and manner with her interviewees.

MrsHelsBels74 · 11/01/2013 13:13

What age is middle age anyway...should I be worried about random stabbings should my inflection go awry? Grin

Tiiiny · 11/01/2013 13:14

Not as bad as 'hissy' speakers, always women, usually the type who have a slightly affected voice and come across really stuck up. So annoying.

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:15

No it was a guest talking about someone called Tom I think.

It's been around in the UK for at least a couple of decades, so no reason to be particularly surprised at middle-aged women being among those who do it.

Completely reasonable, of course, for you to focus your hatred of that speech form on middle-aged women, though. What else are they there for but to be a receptacle for venom a kind of hate spittoon now that they are past their prime years for being sexually attractive.

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:16

Middle aged is from (84/2=)42 until 60 in my book.

OP posts:
PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:17

Floaty, I am one myself. As I keep pointing out. I don't often hear men doing it, the worst offenders are young women.

OP posts:
PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:17

And if I did it myself I would have to stab myself!

chocoluvva · 11/01/2013 13:17

I sympathise then OP - it just sounds pretentious IMO.

Do you feel that by the time they're middle-aged, they should know better so it's worse than when it comes from a younger person?

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:18

YY choco.

allagory · 11/01/2013 13:18

Maybe they weren't upspeaking. Maybe they were so scared their voice was going squeaky. 13.02 is lunchtime, Pam, time for a ricecake?

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:18

Totally irrationally I know.

OP posts:
Getoutofmygumboot · 11/01/2013 13:19

I think you need to get out more op....

ethelb · 11/01/2013 13:19

disapproving of interrogative inflection is a common snobby rant.

marchwillsoonbehere · 11/01/2013 13:20

march because they should know better!!!

Damn straight!

Whilst we're on the subject of inflection I will tell you who drives me mad and that's Miranda Sawyer (not quite middle aged but getting there). Doesn't matter what she's saying, she always uses exactly the same speed variation and pause patterns. In fact I sometimes think she decides what she's going to say on the basis of how well it fits into her talking pattern, the actual sense being of secondary importance. I have turned off the radio many a time and oft when she's been on!

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:22

Atkins, it will be a healthy hammy salad.

ethelb, glad I am a snob then Grin Take it you upspeak.

Getout, I have already been to the gym today, that's finished me off.

Getoutofmygumboot · 11/01/2013 13:24

Stop listening to radio 4 then ;)

marchwillsoonbehere · 11/01/2013 13:24

Re the middle aged definition I calculate it differently from you Pessary. Given a life expectancy of 84, the middle trimester is 28-56, so yah boo sucks to all you 29 year olds who thought you were still young! Wink

Getoutofmygumboot · 11/01/2013 13:24

Whoops Wink

PessaryPam · 11/01/2013 13:25

march I like your thinking but it pushed me to imminent old age though Hmm

Listening to Miranda Sawyer and I kind of see what you mean.

OP posts:
veryworried29 · 11/01/2013 13:28

Yanbu. Also cannot stand people checking that you've understood them all the time "you know what I mean?" "you get me?" "if that makes sense" or just plain "you know?". Drives me beyond nuts and off to the outer reaches of nuttyville.

And also, all people being interviewed on the Radio: can you please STOP beginning every answer with "So ...
