To be sick of people saying...

..."I'm so OCD".

Its such a massively debilitating illness and I'm getting sick of hearing people use it in this context. Like when they say "I tidied my house today. I'm so OCD" giggle.
Or "I like having my books alphabetically. I'm so OCD". "I wash my hair every day. I'm so OCD".

No, you're just tidy and/or clean!

I know I'm sensitive to it considering this illness ruined my life for a long time but I'm so fed up of people trivialising OCD and what it is. It just makes it harder for people who suffer from it to get help or get taken seriously.

Every time someone says it I feel like telling them to go and live a day in my life when my OCD was at its peak and then see if they think they are "so OCD".

Every person who says it is contributing to the misinterpretation of what OCD is which really does not help people who suffer from it. I've even had a health visitor who was told I had OCD tell me "oh I have that sometimes, its where you wash your hands all the time isn't it! Why don't you just use anti bac spray like I do?" Gee, thanks health visitor! I'm cured!

I'm trying to think of any other illnesses people do this about and the only ones I can think of that I've heard are more mental health illnesses. Or do people do it about physical illnesses too?

Am I being unreasonable to be sick of this?!

I know what you mean but people say all manner of things -

I'm so depressed

That is mental!

I'm a bit OCD

And my particular favourite is when someone on MN posts about someone really horrible who has done something really nasty and some bright spark pipes up with 'Perhaps they have mental health issues?'

Errrrrr perhaps they are just a horrible person?!!!

And breathe......

I watched a programme last year with some comedian claiming he was ocd ( can't remember his name he does 8 out of 10 cats ) anyway he wasn't ocd just annoying and anal, those poor people were disabled by their condition I did feel for them , op YANBU an I hope you are better ,

on a side note i agree with valium people can just be nasty and horrible without having MH issues,

Whispering the programme last year asserted that it is a spectrum of obsessive compulsive behaviours, which only constitute a disorder once it takes over your life - I think the psychiatrist's measure was more than an hour or so per day stuck in those behaviours.

Thanks Horatia

I am finding the current plethora of "I could kill myself" or "I want to die" in poor taste (over something like a bad hair cut or embarrassing moment) but I could be alone in that!
