The name Darcy

My DS is 9 and when he was born I called him Darcy (using the boy spelling) after Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudice (my all time favourite book) it wasn't a popular name and the only other person I'd heard of was Darcey Bussell (ballerina, notice the difference in the name spelling). When I was in the hospital at the time every single nurse asked "Did you name him after the guy in Neighbors?" WTF!?! No I did not, I politely told them why we chose the name Darcy.

Everything was fine, as far as I was aware there weren't any children in my town called Darcy, my son loves the fact that I named him after my favourite character from my favourite book but...over the past two or three years I've noticed more parents (one being a parent at my sons school) calling their daughters Darcy and when I say Oh that's a nice name my son's called Darcy but I spell it CY for the boy spelling they say "But that's how we spell it as well" and then they give me a look as if I'm the strange woman who's given her poor son a girls name.

I just want to punch them in their smug faces.

I totally agree with you on the spellings; Darcy for a boy and Darcey for a girl.

I used to work in a day nursery and one of the toddlers was called Darcy (a boy). It suited him perfectly and since then I've always thought that it's a lovely name for a boy. However, I have two dds, and I've told my Dh that if we ever have another baby (we won't though) and it's a girl, I'd want to call her Darcey!

Fwiw, my dd1 is called Taylor, so I sometimes get the looks because apparently, Taylor is a boys name, so I understand your desire to punch their smug faces!

YouOldSlag · 08/01/2013 16:43

The spellings are made up by the parents! I've seen Darcie, Darcy and Darcey. Where on earth does this male/female spelling come from? Just because Darcey Bussell's parents decided to put an "e" in it doesn't make it the law!

PleasePudding · 08/01/2013 16:44

My grandfather born 1921 was a D'Arcy, I always thought of it as a boy name that has recently become adapted to Darcey as a girls name.

itmar · 08/01/2013 16:46

My great grandfather (born approx 1870ish) was a Darcy.

goodygumdrops · 08/01/2013 16:51

In the 2011 name stats Darcy (that spelling) was 110 in the girls name list and 862 in the boys name list. Just saying.

squeakytoy · 08/01/2013 16:54

If you knowingly call your child an unusual name, then why be suprised when people make comments about it. No doubt he will change his name to Alex before too long..

squoosh · 08/01/2013 17:00

I think of it first and foremost as a surname.

Secondly I'm aware that it's a name that's suddenly become hugely popular for girls in the last 4 or 5 years.

Your son is going to have a lot of female contemporaries called Darcy/Darcey/Darcie/Darcee.

Pandemoniaa · 08/01/2013 17:07

it's the look parents of girls give me whren i say my sons called Darcy

Have you considered that this may well be because you are giving them a "punch in the smug face" look? To be honest, it you choose an interesting and unusual name then you are going to have to live with the potential for misunderstanding. Otherwise you will implode long before Darcy-Alexander is old enough to fight his own battles.

zlist · 08/01/2013 17:21

I think if it as a surname and then an Australian girl's name spelt Darcie. I haven't come across any british child with that name yet. I haven't met anyone, male or female, with the Darcy spelling for a forename yet.

OddBoots · 08/01/2013 17:24

Well I have been educated, I didn't realise that Darcy was a name given to boys too, I've only known girls with the name. I'm not sure it matters so much these days, more and more names seem to be mixed and that can only be a good thing in my view. :)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/01/2013 17:33

There's a (male) Darcy in Gone With the Wind. I always associate it with that.

I think it's a nice name, and agree with odd, it's nice there are lots of names that can be male or female.

diddl · 08/01/2013 17:44

Thing is, you´ve said yourself that he is named Darcy after Mr Darcy & therefore has a surname as a first name.

Why wouldn´t females also be able to have this and with the same spelling?

thegreylady · 08/01/2013 17:50

DRC is probably the modern spelling :)

valiumredhead · 08/01/2013 18:20

Or Daarcee Grin

EmpressOfThePuddle · 08/01/2013 18:28

I've heard it for girls and boys. and I prefer it with just y. I think the e spolis it, and not keen on Darcie either.

MrsHoolie · 08/01/2013 18:37

I have a Darcey, obviously researched the name and found out the boys spelling in the US is Darcy.
Until there is a famous Darcy though you will always come across confusion.
I like it for a boy or girl.

ScarletLady02 · 08/01/2013 18:41

I always liked the name as I was a big Smashing Pumpkins fan Grin

Glittertwins · 08/01/2013 20:09

I'd only come across it spelt as Darci until very relatively recently. There is a male Darcy in reception at our school and its the first time I've heard it used for a boy, the other 2 are girls.

I knew a Darcy at school over 35 years ago now. He was always windy so was affectionately known as fartsy Blush

HollyBerryBush · 08/01/2013 20:19

iI hate to upset the OP but I know a 15 girl called Darcy.

Mind you, I didn't realise names had ownership!

Tee2072 · 08/01/2013 20:25

You're totally screwed now because Darcy Lewis is Jane Foster's female assistant in the Thor movie and may appear in other movies with Thor and The Avengers.

So now the name is trendy.

sudaname · 08/01/2013 20:35

But if you are getting 'looks' off parents of girl Darcys tbh you start it by making your little speech about 'but l spell it 'cy' for the 'boy spelling'.
Can you not see you are making them defensive by basically declaring that they have spelt their daughters name 'wrongly' before they have even told you how they spell it !!

DHs good friends have a baby dgd called Darcy and she would definitely punch your smug face right back, trust me.
