The name Darcy

My DS is 9 and when he was born I called him Darcy (using the boy spelling) after Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudice (my all time favourite book) it wasn't a popular name and the only other person I'd heard of was Darcey Bussell (ballerina, notice the difference in the name spelling). When I was in the hospital at the time every single nurse asked "Did you name him after the guy in Neighbors?" WTF!?! No I did not, I politely told them why we chose the name Darcy.

Everything was fine, as far as I was aware there weren't any children in my town called Darcy, my son loves the fact that I named him after my favourite character from my favourite book but...over the past two or three years I've noticed more parents (one being a parent at my sons school) calling their daughters Darcy and when I say Oh that's a nice name my son's called Darcy but I spell it CY for the boy spelling they say "But that's how we spell it as well" and then they give me a look as if I'm the strange woman who's given her poor son a girls name.

I just want to punch them in their smug faces.

I was just thinking that the "e" could also be to distinguish it from the surname?

QuickLookBusy · 08/01/2013 14:30

But as someone else said, Darcy is a surname-not a boys name.

So people are entitled to use that spelling as a girls or boys name.

IThinkOfHappyWhenIThinkOfYou · 08/01/2013 14:32

I think it's pretty androgynous. I know a few girls called Darcy and one adult old man.

CecyHall · 08/01/2013 14:34

Makes me think of Darcy DeFarcy from Roland Rat.

TroublesomeEx · 08/01/2013 14:37

Grin Gwendoline

HerRoyalGoddess · 08/01/2013 14:38

It's not the fact that girls are being called Darcy that's bothering me ( I knew when I chose it girls and boys use it) it's the look parents of girls give me whren i say my sons called Darcy

Blimey Cecy. I haven't heard that name in a bloody long time! :o

diddl · 08/01/2013 14:40

Perhaps it´s when you tell them that "cy" is the boy spelling?

CloudsAndTrees · 08/01/2013 14:46

I'm sure people don't mean to give you a look that you find offensive, but it cane hard to completely disguise a feeling of surprise. If people have only ever know it to be a girls name, then it's not surprising that they are surprised when you say you have given it to a boy.

I only know one child called Darcy, she's a girl, but I've never really thought about it before so would have presumed it was just one of those names that can be male or female.

Blatherskite · 08/01/2013 14:51

Every other baby girl I've know in the past 2 years has been called some variation on the name Darcy/Darcey/Darcie. It is really, really popular at the moment.

I think you might have to get used to it.

NoelHeadbands · 08/01/2013 14:55

I'll be honest, I would have said it's a girls name although now I think it's super-cute for a boy.

Perhaps the 'look' they're giving you is more a "wtf are you on about" regarding the boy/girl spelling??

Kendodd · 08/01/2013 14:55

My heart does sink when I hear how popular it's becoming. I hope it doesn't turn into the new Sharon (or Darren).

FloatyBeatie · 08/01/2013 15:06

I blame Darcey B.'s parents for attempting to feminise the name by shoving an e in at random. Not at all necessary, in view of the fact that the great Mr Darcy had female relatives with the same surname as him and no ladylike e in it.

valiumredhead · 08/01/2013 15:11

The 'look' the other parents give you is probably because you point out that inyo they are spelling their child's name incorrectly Grin

EmpressMaud · 08/01/2013 15:13

I agree. The 'look' might be due to talk of 'girls' and 'boys' spellings

mistressploppy · 08/01/2013 15:15

I always thought it was a boy's name, and the only one I know is a 3yo DarCY in DS's swimming class.

I think it's a cracking name for a boy, not so keen on it for girls, and I don't know why.

valiumredhead · 08/01/2013 15:16

I know a rabbit called Darcy - it's a girl Grin

Paiviaso · 08/01/2013 15:19

I've only met one person with this name, it was a male, and it was spelled D'Arcy

HappyNewHissy · 08/01/2013 15:25

OP, your children's names are all beautiful, really!

I do think you ought to get that post removed though.

Blatherskite · 08/01/2013 15:39

OP you really might want to get the post with your children's names and ages in it removed as it makes you very, very identifiable. They're not exactly run of the mill when double barrelled like that.

You might be happy to be identified for this thread right now but in 6 months time when you've forgotten about it and are drunk and posting on the bumsex thread, you might not be so keen on being so easily spotted.

3monkeys3 · 08/01/2013 15:58

Both my boys have androgynous names. I didn't do it on purpose but I don't care. I have an androgynous name myself - I like it! Don't let it bother you.

YouOldSlag · 08/01/2013 16:22

I agree with a previous poster who said they are probably giving you a strange look because you have decided there are male and female spellings of the name when there aren't.

You shouldn't ever want to punch someone and their faces probably aren't smug.

HollySheet · 08/01/2013 16:27

Ahhh I wouldnt sweat it OP, life's too short to get arsey about Darcy.

YouOldSlag · 08/01/2013 16:29

Smile Holly

ll31 · 08/01/2013 16:34

Would have thought it was girls name tbh. .
