To wonder if Amazon Prime is worth the £49 a year?

I do order from them a lot but I don't know if its too much to pay for next day delivery. I'd get Amazon Family membership too, but that's only really useful if you need stuff that's on offer. Has anyone got it? Do you think it's worth it?

I forgot to cancel my free trial so have had it for a year. Lots of stuff I buy doesn't seem to be eligible for prime so it really hasn't been much of a benefit to me so in my opinion it's not worth it

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/01/2013 18:14

We tried the streaming version of LF and hardly used it so probably not much point. They ought to include it though.

NetworkGuy · 07/01/2013 18:15

OK, should have been LOVEFiLM Instant as that can be used on the Kindle Fire, right now.

Trills · 07/01/2013 18:40

how about contacting Amazon and asking when they will offer you items from LoveFilm for free

I've paid for a particular service. I get that service. I wouldn't mind if they decided to give me another service for free, but I wouldn't expect it. Do you go to a restaurant, ask for a main course, then demand that they give you pudding for no extra cost?

The Germany/Italy comparisons, I would assume that Germany's postal system is cheaper (so they can get next-day for 30 instead of 50) and that Italy's is less reliable/efficient (so they don't offer next-day on a subscription but offer 2-days for a cheaper rate).

ihearsounds · 07/01/2013 18:55

I have it. Means that I can order on Thurs/Fri for Saturday delivery, the one day I know people are around. Mid week its a gamble if I or neighbours are around (have lovely neighbours who dont mind taking in stuff).. Plus I order stuff for said neighbours knowing it will be quick..Also got a friends kindle registered for the library.
Depends really how much you use amazon. I use it weekly. Plus noticed preordered games I get a day before Grin

Tee2072 · 07/01/2013 18:57

I already have LoveFilm streaming on my Fire as part of my LoveFilm package.

12ylnon · 07/01/2013 19:01

I order EVERYTHING from amazon, toiletries, books, toys, stationary, homeware, baby stuff, but tbh, i find that most stuff on amazon comes so quickly anyway that it's not worth getting next day/ prime delivery.

Trills · 07/01/2013 19:03

I would spend less than £49 pounds a year if I got most things on the free 3-5 day delivery and only paid for Prime when I needed it.

But I'd also have to go to the Post Office depot more.

And I like getting things the next day. It makes me happy.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/01/2013 19:03

Seriously, Fiderer, there's no online shopping in Germany?

Seabird72 · 07/01/2013 19:41

I received a free month trial and when I ordered an item the parcel company didn;t deliver the next day but e-mailed to say it would be the day after - I didn't complain to Amazon though and now wish I had done as I could have gotten another month free! I like the delivery chap though (he's a nice guy) so was worried I would get him into trouble rather than the company. Don't think it's worth such a huge amount in all honestly as yes - they usually deliver quite quickly anyway and recently I've found most of my purchases are through the marketplace sellers which obviously aren't covered.

NetworkGuy · 07/01/2013 19:45

Do you go to a restaurant, ask for a main course, then demand that they give you pudding for no extra cost?

No, but if it was part of a chain, and they did that in America, then I'd feel it reasonable to ask what plans they had to do similar here.

I acknowledge there may be differences, but for many years there has regularly been a direct translation such that $500 item in USA would often cost £500 here, and even if one makes some allowance for exchange rates and taxes, the cost of delivery and so on, we have been charged excessively.

With Amazon doing their absolute damndest to avoid UK corporation tax (or whichever other taxes they might have been expected to pay) then yes, I would have no embarrassment at asking them for something more, to put us on a par with what their American customers can get.

Trills · 07/01/2013 19:48

OK, fair enough to ask politely if they have plans. OTOH in America Prime is not next-day but 2-days (big country), so we wouldn't want that part of it to be copied here.

Tee2072 · 07/01/2013 19:52

So just because Americans get something we have to get something too?
You sound like my 3 year old saying 'it isn't fair!!'

Neither is life.

And Amazon is avoiding Corporation Tax by following the rules that the government you voted in set. Don't like the law, change the law makers. Don't blame the company for taking advantage of them. I own a company and I take every tax advantage I can.

NetworkGuy · 07/01/2013 19:53

"I already have LoveFilm streaming on my Fire as part of my LoveFilm package."

However, would you need the rest of your LoveFilm package if you were an Amazon Prime customer and had LoveFilm Instant for free ?

I'm comparing like with like as far as I can tell - UK cost vs $79 pa in USA.

Tee2072 · 07/01/2013 19:56

Stop trying to compare US to UK. It doesn't work. I know. I'm from the US.

NetworkGuy · 07/01/2013 20:11

I know you're from the US, but there's no problem as far as I can see comparing services continents apart, costing similar prices... and we're all entitled to post our opinion.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree, however seeing others saying that they do not feel 49 quid is good value for them, it might be a way that Amazon/LoveFilm could keep that money coming in.

OK, then, maybe I should say "For those who decide to cancel, would having access to LoveFilm Instant for Free, have made you consider staying?"

BertieBotts · 07/01/2013 20:14

I signed up to the free trial before Christmas and it was excellent for Christmas shopping but other than that, no, I wouldn't bother.

Tee2072 · 07/01/2013 20:19

My point is you can't compare the prices because they don't follow the exchange rate at all. Not on goods. Not on services.

Or today Prime would be £49 here and $78.89 in the US (using today's exchange rate of $1.61 to the pound sterling) and change daily with the exchange rate. So yesterday, Prime would have cost you $78.40 in the States, which is an absurd thing to expect!

Of course you're entitled to your opinion. And I'm entitled to think your opinion is wrong and based on 'fair' which is what my 3 year old bases his opinion on.

NetworkGuy · 21/02/2014 13:28

I see they are about to push the price up from £49 to £79.

They have not added LoveFilm streaming (or they are keeping this separate from LoveFilm branding) but here's what I was just prompted with...

In 05 days will include unlimited streaming of movies and TV episodes.
Try Prime by February 26th to lock in your membership at £79 £49 for one year.

I wondered how long it would be before they thought of a way to add value to the Prime facility, and obviously, this now provides content for those who've bought the Kindle Fire HD.

NetworkGuy · 21/02/2014 13:30

Aaargh - wonder why that didn't work...

NetworkGuy · 21/02/2014 13:31

OK, so it took my 'bold' but I forgot to use strikethrough of the £79 fee they will charge soon.

WreckTangle · 21/02/2014 13:34

With regard to forgetting to cancel before the free trial runs out Amazon seem to be very good in refunding.

I must've signed up for the free trial after one too many drinks one night and nearly died when I seen £49 come out of my account.

I called them up and it was back in my account 3 days later.

cozietoesie · 21/02/2014 13:37

As far as I understand it, Lovefilm instant and Prime instant will be the same thing - it's only the Lovefilm by post that will be different.

FreckledLeopard · 21/02/2014 13:39

I inadvertently forgot to cancel my free trial, my card was debited and I immediately contacted them and it was refunded.

However, I have subsequently paid the £49 for Prime because I order so much from Amazon and want the next day delivery. Also, have just seen that Prime customers will get the free streaming service too, so looking forward to that.

NetworkGuy · 21/02/2014 13:59

Thanks cozietoesie for the info.
