To be cheesed off that my meal has been chosen for me?

I may be overreacting...

We're off for a family meal (in laws) to a buffet style Chinese restaurant. Although its someone else's birthday we are paying for ourselves.

The person who booked the table (not birthday person) has just text to say the first two courses have been ordered for us 'for ease'. It's a fucking buffet place, that's the ease surely?

I'm stroppy now because I'm fussy and I bet I don't like anything that has been chosen. Why why why???

AIBU?

If the restaurant needs orders in advance then surely the organiser could text people the options?

It may be something generic like duck that's been ordered but I don't eat duck so would be very pissed off.

If the organiser is paying then fine, I would put up and shut up and pick at bits to eat.

If I'm paying then I damn well want to choose my own, not be lumped with something I can't eat.

MerylStrop · 05/01/2013 17:30

Maybe the restaurnt requested it

And if its a chinese buffet, maybe its just the soup thing they trot out to make you eat less of the nice stuff

LadyMargolotta · 05/01/2013 17:30

They have probably ordered a selection of the first two courses for you all to share.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/01/2013 17:30

YANBU, hope it goes OK. Xmas Smile

HeathRobinson · 05/01/2013 17:35

Don't create difficulty over a family occasion. WTF?

My mum once booked a meal for us at a carvery. Did she bother ordering a vegetarian dish for me. I thought you could just eat the vegetables, she said.

The chef was disappointed when he found out and, as a vegetarian himself, would have been more than happy to prepare something.

Still, at least everyone else was happy, eh, at the family occasion.

Jins · 05/01/2013 17:42

I'd probably let it go if it was a group of friends but I'd not be staying quiet if it was a family occasion.

Luckily my family all know me and always check places are ok first (I'm coeliac and nobody except my Mum seems to be able to get the hang of it)

I also don't do shared food Grin

LadyMargolotta · 05/01/2013 17:45

Instead of texting them, can you phone them and actually speak to them?

SantasENormaSnob · 06/01/2013 08:12

How did it go?

livvymc · 06/01/2013 08:23

How did it go?

KittyFane1 · 06/01/2013 08:40

What did they order OP? Come back and tell us!!

HenryCrun · 06/01/2013 08:58

Calm it everyone!

I agree with squeakytoy in that it'll very probably be a giant selection of starters and some Peking duck. It is a buffet so presumably you can get whatever you like on top of that.

I don't like going out for Chinese with lots of people, as when I'm buying for myself I invariably get the spiciest thing on the menu, and if people are getting lots of stuff to share then the really hot stuff is very often vetoed. Ditto curry - quite often big parties will just order set menus, leaving me without the Chicken Jalfrezi I crave.

Still, food is food and it's mostly good. Better to break bread with friends and family than cause a scene. It's not that big of a deal.

ChocolateTeacup · 06/01/2013 09:00

Hope the food was ok :)

MostlyFine · 06/01/2013 09:03

Have just read whole thread and am desperate for chinese food even though it is 0900 in the morning and i absolutely must know what was ordered. Come on OP Wink

Cuddlyrunner · 06/01/2013 12:09

I need to know!

SauvignonBlanche · 06/01/2013 12:12

No update?

ThedementedPenguin · 06/01/2013 12:12

So.... Was it a mix starter?

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 06/01/2013 12:21

come on nicknack what did you have to eat?

EggRules · 06/01/2013 12:24

I want to know too.

Unless hosts are paying AND have ordered a wide selection, this is very annoying.

NickNacks · 06/01/2013 12:27

Ah sorry! Just saw this in Active Convos!

Well...

It all went fine. I'm not sure whether the restaurant didn't listen or what but we were still presented with the menu with the selections on and just chose ourselves. Everyone else had a quiet moan outside too because they didn't want their meals chosen and thought it was unnecessarily bossy. We were all delighted that it didn't seem to have been pulled off.

Had a bit of a Blush Blush moment at the end when said bossy relative sneaked out to the bar and paid the bill! Lovely evening in the end had by all. No bitching and birthday person had a nice time :)

Note to self: chill the fuck out!!

The only circumstance where 'don't worry I've got it covered ' is acceptable.

Phew

LadyMargolotta · 06/01/2013 12:29

Smile glad to hear it all went well! And how generous of your relative!

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 06/01/2013 12:43

ToomuchheuchatendofHogmanay · 06/01/2013 16:01

Thank goodness for the update! And yes I am still craving Chinese buffet now!

NickNacks · 06/01/2013 17:39

Sorry it wasn't more exciting. I bet you were all hoping for a food fight or something. Grin
