Where are they? I downloaded a couple of books and they saved onto my computer, they said they were transferring to the kindle when I pressed the button. But now I can't see them anywhere on the actual kindle. Sad

I love everyone getting judgemental. 'I have standards' !

Please, everyone of you, could you look me in the eye and tell me you have not EVER used the office photocopier, even once, for personal use? Ever used the work phone for a personal call? Taken a pen home?. Ever eaten a sweet from the pic n mix in Woolworths?

Yes, the OP is stealing, and theft is wrong, and deserves to hear people's opinions; but there are a lot of people on high horses this afternoon.....

Catchingmockingbirds · 05/01/2013 15:50

Everyone has stolen an Argos pen at one point - that's why they changed them to pencils eventually :o

LisaMed · 05/01/2013 16:16

PeachActiviaMinge I think I love you.

Actually, believe it or not, I've never downloaded anything illegally - I even paid for internet games. I just feel more comfortable that way. Blush It's up to others what they feel comfortable with.

A lot of the self published ebooks are cheaper than a charity shop.

I can remember when it was really hard to get hold of books, before Amazon and ebay and the internet. I lived in a small town and it was really tough to find books. I am very glad that the internet has changed that. I just think that it is worth pointing out that illegal ebooks are not such a victimless crime and that it does have an impact.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/01/2013 16:21

I didn't know you can illegally download entire books!

Not that I would. I prefer hard copies books wise. Definitely cannot see myself waltzing into Waterstones picking up a few books and running off without paying.

Same thing isn't it?

HortyGal · 05/01/2013 16:22

You copy the .mobi file into the Documents folder on the kindle.

TunipTheVegedude · 05/01/2013 16:24

People used to steal sweets from the Pick'n'mix counter at Woolworths? Shock

Catchingmockingbirds · 05/01/2013 16:31

Yes tunip, that's why they went out of business Wink

laalala · 05/01/2013 17:42

Right I've worked out where I was going wrong loading them onto my kindle, and you'll all be glad to know that I've just downloaded a heap of free books off of amazon. Didn't realise quite how worked up everyone was going to get when I started this thread, but you'll also be pleased to know I even stretched to buying a book for 20p off of amazon every little helps ey?

It's theft, pure and simple. I'm always surprised that people don't see it that way.

I do some freelance writing and I was recently taken on by an agent for my first novel which is out with publishers at the moment. I am under no illusions that I'm going to make vast amounts of money if it is published, but I do hope to earn just about enough to cover a day a week of childcare so I can finish writing book number 2. If it is published I will be gutted if I find out that people are stealing it after so much work went into it.

I know several published authors and this is their livelihood. It's no better than waiting for someone to get paid and then pickpocketing them of their salary.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on ebooks then browse the huge collection of cheap, self-published books on amazon. Some of them are utter dross but some are brilliant books that just didn't quite fit into a traditional publisher's list.

cinnamonnut · 05/01/2013 17:56

Stealing from the internet is unfortunately becoming very common and seen as fine. A friend of mine worked with a large company in a graphics section, and a woman she worked with actually took pictures from google images for CORPORATE use on posters. She didn't understand why it was wrong when it was explained to her.

laalala · 06/01/2013 16:31

So the bloody book I actually bought off of amazon and managed to get onto my kindle won't actually let me read it. It just comes up with a message saying it's licensed to a different user. Wahh it's not cost me the grand sum of 20p and I really actually want to read it. What do I do now?

Pardon for me for being sanctimonious about people stealing my intellectual property and depriving me of money I need to support my family. Publishers, even large ones, cannot afford this: they are cutting their author lists.

Those of you who illegally download should perhaps let us know where you work so we can go round and help ourselves to some free goods and services.

valiumredhead · 07/01/2013 12:24

I can only borrow one book a month with Amazon prime - that's crap imo!

ValentineWiggins · 07/01/2013 12:25

Question for the authors out there...

If I have purchased a book in a DRM format for one ereader, then change to a different ereader, do you mind if I find a way to unDRM the book so that I can put it on the new ereader rather than buy a new copy in a different format?

Extension question: If I own a paper copy do you then mind if I find an e-copy somewhere?

Assume that there is no chance that I will pay for a second copy of any book where I still have access to the original (paper/ebook) version.

Pandemoniaa · 07/01/2013 12:30

Agree. It amazes me that people assume they can help themselves to the products of my creativity yet don't see that this is the same as wandering down to the corner shop and stealing their milk.

Abra1d · 07/01/2013 12:40

Valentine, that seems ok to me. Extension question slightly less happy to agree, though. Thank you for at least trying to see our POV.

oldnewmummy · 07/01/2013 13:20

Boffins Mum: you have another sale.

Maybe we should have a thread where all the authors tell us about their books and we can buy them.

(Also bought Life of Pi for 20p)

Abra1d · 07/01/2013 14:08

That would be great, though we woukd have to namechange, I imagine!

DadOnIce · 07/01/2013 14:19

If you do this, I hope your Kindle gets a really nasty virus and becomes unusable.

BoffinMum · 07/01/2013 22:53

Thank you! Grin
I have now broken even on my coding costs and I have overtaken one of Nigel Slater's books and one of Nigella's!
And a TV company are interviewing me tomorrow Shock Grin

Abra1d · 07/01/2013 23:04

Go, Boffin! This is fabulous.

You know, doing the HTML or CSS coding yourself isn't too hard. I had to teach myself for a book which has never been picked up by a publisher but which I may publish myself when I finish the WIP.

But if you are outselling Nigella, cost may not be an issue next time. Grin

CiderwithBuda · 07/01/2013 23:09

Boffinmum - I bought it too! I looked at your blog once after seeing it mentioned on here and liked it. Smile

BoffinMum · 08/01/2013 11:37

TBH I am only 'outselling' one of Nigella's older books in Kindle form in one list thanks to my free day's promotion when it was downloaded 1500 times for free, but we will keep that between ourselves.

The TV thing went quite well. Only the top half of me appeared on screen, luckily. I hear whether they want to go ahead with stage 2 by the end of the week.

BoffinMum · 08/01/2013 11:46

abra1d, I used to be able to code in HTML4 but I haven't done it for so long, and I can't do CSS and things like that, so I have got lazy. Wink

SirBoobAlot · 08/01/2013 12:04

Boffin have just purchased your book. Mainly to overtake Nigella Wink Well done!

I don't understand the need to download them illegally, when all of the classics are free.
