Where are they? I downloaded a couple of books and they saved onto my computer, they said they were transferring to the kindle when I pressed the button. But now I can't see them anywhere on the actual kindle. Sad

If you steal my ebook I will hunt you down and kill you with a toilet brush.
And then write a blog post about it.
Be warned. Wink

tigerdriverII · 04/01/2013 20:59

Just tell us exactly how this happens and we can judge if it's right or wrong.

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2013 21:00

YOu can borrow a book on a kindle - that;s not really the issue that writers or musicians have. But signiificant file sharing is a serious threat to the income of artists

toweraboveyou · 04/01/2013 21:00

I'm also a published Kindle author with a few books for sale. I don't mind if you download them illegally. I just ask that you leave a nice review so those who aren't in the know buy them.

cantspel · 04/01/2013 21:01

For reseach only.

Google a program called calibre, download it to your computer (it is safe and virus free). Next google for your favorite file share site 4shared.com is just one such site.
Seach for what you are looking for and download it onto your computer, inport it into calibre, conver the file to mobi format and then press the upload to kindle button.

Calibre has a good tutorial which will walk you through each step.

cantspel · 04/01/2013 21:03

But it is the same with a download, someone has bought it in the first place and is sharing it.

How about charity shop books? Once they are passed on and resold the autor is not getting any further revenue from the resales.

Chanatan · 04/01/2013 21:03

Calibre may be virus free but are you certain that the file shareing sites are?

EuroShagmore · 04/01/2013 21:04

I don't illegally download anything. I disapprove.

MrsKeithRichards · 04/01/2013 21:06

I got a kindle from Santa, I'd love to read a mumsnetters book, I'd pay and everything!

cantspel · 04/01/2013 21:06

I use a mac but if not make sure you use a decent anti virus software.

Chanatan · 04/01/2013 21:09

No anti virus is 100% secure,go and browse some of the techy forums and see the mess some people have got themselves into from illegal downloading, its not worth the aggro or the time, would rather pay for my books.

Pandemoniaa · 04/01/2013 21:09

I don't think you've really grasped the issue, have you? Lending a book is fine because it has already been purchased (unless of course your friends routinely shoplift from bookshops). Buying a second hand book from a charity shop also means that it has originally been purchased.

Finding work arounds on the internet or any other method of avoiding paying the purchase price is stealing.

OddBoots · 04/01/2013 21:09

Not being able to lend/borrow/donate books and music is why I currently only get physical books and most of my music is on CD.

I can see the benefits of electronic copies but you never own those, you've only paid for the right to rent them.

NewYearNewNagoo · 04/01/2013 21:13

you can borrow a book on a kindle?

No I don't.

I did use the library for proper books, because I don't like to accumulate stuff. Now I buy them electronically because I was fed up of getting library fines and it's easier to have them on me all the time.

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2013 21:14

Charity shops are still legal as well. Honestly, you can't justify a wrong with "everyone else does it" That way leads to Belialesque "timorous guile!

cantspel · 04/01/2013 21:14

But someone would have bought the download in the first placed and then uploaded it to the fileshare site so someone has paid real money for the original.

How do you think people get the original download as i doubt many site there and type it out themselves from a hard copy. The author would have got there royality from the orignal sale in the same way they would get it from the sale in waterstones of a hard copy.

BoffinMum · 04/01/2013 21:15

MrsKeithRichards, look up Austerity Housekeeping on Amazon ... it was actually free yesterday, but I've had to put a price on it again today. If you would care to buy it I would be delighted and give personal advice in relation to any knotty housekeeping problems you would care to PM me with. Grin

motherinferior · 04/01/2013 21:15

Er...if I did, I wouldn't exactly be publicising the fact all over the Internet.

shayshaysmum · 04/01/2013 21:15

Marking my place..

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2013 21:17

File sharing sites copy to multiples not just their friend. You can legally lend on kindle for 2 weeks I don't download music either as I also want to physically own the cd

cantspel · 04/01/2013 21:19

You dont have to use fileshare sites to do anything ilegal as many shares are out of copyright books rather than the latest best sellers. File share is massive and not just with dodgy stuff.

bluer · 04/01/2013 21:21

It is stealing! Although after buying all the game of thrones in paper before finding out I was getting a kindle I feel a bit pained buying them again.

NothingIsAsBadAsItSeems · 04/01/2013 21:21

Some of the sites I buy my ebooks from download to the computer but need to be manually put onto the kindle. Maybe your new ebook is the same?

Crikeyblimey · 04/01/2013 21:25

Please tell me how I can legally "lend"'or "borrow" a book on my Kindle? It is the one thing I'm a bit sad about - I love passing books onto friends when I've enjoyed them. If I can do this legally and for anlimited period, I'll be chuffer than chuffed.

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2013 21:28

Not done it Crikey but am sure you can. Look on Amazon, am sure it;ll tell you there
