I watched 'Queen Victorias children' last night and was shocked at what an absolute nutcase she was.

Did anyone else see it? Poor Victorian people. Her poor kids.

I have just ordered Dennison's book on Beatrice. I didn't go to school in the UK so I learnt very little British history as a child.
I am getting hooked now!

It is 30+ years since i read them, but i did enjoy jean plaidy at the time. As i said i think she has a reputation for accuracy as well.

Very rich people probably did treat children harshly in those days. Schools certainly did My school from some years ago would seem dickensian now.

Victoria was an interesting person. She was not always on perfectly good terms with all her children, but as she had nine of them, that is hardly surprising. her feelings towards them often fluctuated, but that isn't altogether unusual. there are plenty of people even nowadays who don't always get on well with all their children all the time. it certainly isn't true that she didn't care about them, she was devestated when Alice and Alfred died, perhaps the death of Leopold was less of a shock, since he was never expected to live long.
