To think Queen Victoria was a nutter

I watched 'Queen Victorias children' last night and was shocked at what an absolute nutcase she was.

Did anyone else see it? Poor Victorian people. Her poor kids.

Apparently she also hated breastfeeding and when her 2nd eldest daughter insisted on feeding her own child that way- she named a cow at Kensington Palace after her Shock

HollyBerryBush · 04/01/2013 09:08

I would have thought wet nurses were still largely in use during the 19th century? It would be rather odd for any privilieged female to breast feed.

Levantine · 04/01/2013 09:12

Apparently it was quite the thing in upper class circles by the time the princesses had their babies - it really surprised me too

knitknack · 04/01/2013 09:15

I'm reading 'inventing the victorians' by Matthew Sweet at the moment - it's fascinating and entertaining and very well written, if this programme has wetted your appetite!

QuickLookBusy · 04/01/2013 09:27

I haven't seen the programme yet but would like to agree with whoever talked about her awful childhood. Victoria's mother was a control freak, she wouldn't let her sleep on her own or even walk down a staircase without holding someone's hand. Her mother thought she would beable to control her dd when she became queen.

She became queen when she was 18 years old. Victoria knew she c

I was Shock when I read she had written to her eldest daughter saying she resented them for being around when all she wanted to do was be with pa pa Hmm could you imagine an AIBU to resent my children and only want to be with my darling husband Grin
she was indeed a strange cruel woman, didnt she know her beloved albert gave her all those ghastly children

diddl · 04/01/2013 09:40

It wasn´t just her mother though, was it?

Wasn´t it also some chap she was seeing?

Either way, you would have thought that it would have made Victoria want a different childhood for her own children.

Tbh, I don´t see how the children culd have been that much of a bother to her as she would have had nannies anyway!

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:42

for what i took out of it Albert liked his children around and she didnt so when he was at home the children would be with them ,

Selks · 04/01/2013 09:44

Yes that wedding photo was shocking!

MissAnnersley · 04/01/2013 09:47

I watched all three programmes and thought it was really interesting. She certainly was a character!
I am sure I've also read that none of the Hanoverian monarchs had good relationships with their children.

phantomnamechanger · 04/01/2013 09:48

can someone find me the "wedding photo" that keeps being mentioned?

I did not see the programme, but i am aware she was devastated at the loss of Albert, and grief makes people react in different ways. I am, sure her own bizarre upbringing left its scars on her, and made her an odd sort of parent.

SugarplumMary · 04/01/2013 09:48

I'd read similar things in books about her but not quiet so bad - mind you the books don't usually focus on the DC so the many of the shocking things are there but more diluted by other information.

Mayisout · 04/01/2013 09:48

But it was before Freud so they would have believed that you were born as you were born, not that a loveless childhood might have a detrimental effect on your future well being.

diddl · 04/01/2013 09:49

Ah, so it was all Albert´s fault for liking his own children!

She seems to have been really possessive of Albert, didn´t she?

HollyBerryBush · 04/01/2013 09:50

Which wedding was it - I need to google the photo - wish I'd seen the programme - is it on iplayer?

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:50

her upbringing would have obviously added to her character wouldn't it ? she was so precious she wasn't allowed alone then married she was so self obsessed and then she was queen what does that do to somebody Hmm

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:51

is it on iplayer?

probably I have 2 to watch i recorded them

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:52

Yes she was but I think it was for her own selfish reason she needed him to adore her,

MissAnnersley · 04/01/2013 09:52

It was the wedding of her eldest son, the future Edward VII and Alexandra.

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:54

did ANYBODY SEE LAST YEAR THE PROGRAMME ABOUT EDWARD AND ALEXANDRIA THEY WERE COLD FISHES TOO,

MissAnnersley · 04/01/2013 09:54

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:54

oops sorry caps locked,

sassytheFIRST · 04/01/2013 09:55

I saw the second programme about the daughters. Really interesting and, yes, Victoria was both hugely damaged and hugely damaging to her own children.

I wonder how she'd have been if Albert had lived to a ripe old age?

mrsjay · 04/01/2013 09:55

oh god thats weird she is like the grim reeper lurking

DozyDuck · 04/01/2013 09:55

I used to go to school near Osborne house and remember vaguely going there and being taught about how vile she was to her children and something about the photos... I thought it was already common knowledge but that's probably because of where I was brought up. Things were different back then though weren't they?
