To think that tuna in brine and tuna in sunflower oil are two very different things?

DP insists there is no difference between them, I say of course there bloody is! I like oily tuna in my sandwiches, I hate briney tuna in sandwiches but use it for cooking. DP always grumbles when I get the oily stuff because it's a bit dearer than the briney one 'I don't see why you have to get that one, it's just the same as the other one anyway!' he is a miserable git sometimes.

Anyway, while we're on the subject, what's that no-drain tuna like?

I like the oil ones after years of brine/spring water tuna. Recently started buying more no drain after being fed up of getting hardly any tuna in the normal tins. It might be 20p more but you seem to get more than 20p more tuna.

But yes, a seared tuna steak or tuna sashimi is vastly preferable. Just that the rest of the family think not. Though the cats would probably be on my side with the sashimi.

I do drain it, I just like to leave a little bit of oil in there to keep it nice and moist. MIL drains it until it's practically dried tuna flakes.

Tuna in olive oil all the way.

Tuna in a water variant tastes desiccated.

Horrid, horrid, horrid.

TiaMariaandEggnog · 03/01/2013 23:10

Spring water for me too - can't stand the oil as you either have to spend ages draining it to get rid of the oil or eat it tasting all gooey and oily (yuck) - I'd take the brine if I couldn't get spring water, but not fond of the extra salt (I am craving a tuna sandwich now!)

sausagesandwich34 · 03/01/2013 23:13

ew the oily one is all, well......oily

boak

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2013 23:15

Spring Water for me. Don't like oily lips. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 03/01/2013 23:16

I could just eat a Tuna Sweetcorn and Mayo sandwich.

Softlysoftly · 03/01/2013 23:18

Brine is Yak, the taste is so obvious even when it's been cooked.

Oil or water every time!

PimpMyHippo · 03/01/2013 23:19

Brine for me, I can't stand anything oily. My flatmate and I accidentally picked up oily tuna once and both found it disgusting - the stray cat that lived in the car park enjoyed it though. :)

VerySmallSqueak · 03/01/2013 23:19

I have just realised that although I buy it in spring water as the oily one is too fattening and the briney one too salty,I then mix it with some lovely (fattening and salty) salad cream to make a sandwich.

I think I'm spouting crap.Again.

ifancyashandy · 03/01/2013 23:21

Sainsburys Albacore tuna in oil comes in a jar and is food of the Gods. Bloody expensive (around £3 a jar) but by God it is bloody nectar.

ThePigOfHappiness · 03/01/2013 23:24

Oil for dp, brine or spring water for me. Kids don't care.
We have a full press :o

goldenlula · 03/01/2013 23:37

Tuna in spring water for everyone in this house, I do the shopping Wink

notapizzaeater · 03/01/2013 23:44

Oil tastes soooo much better and the oil is drained and added to the dog and cat biscuits which they then argue over !!!!

CanYouHearMe · 03/01/2013 23:49

Sainsburys tuna in spring water for me. Still tastes salty though.

Does anyone else have to have a drink close by when eating tuna? It always gets stuck when I eat it in a sandwich.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/01/2013 23:50

YANBU

But I always buy it in spring water myself, then it can be used for all purposes.

MildredIsMyAlterEgo · 03/01/2013 23:55

Open can of tuna in brine. Drain. Add vinegar. Job done. (DP adds salt but he is from Eastern Europe)

You lot with your oily oil and your high-fallutin spring water Grin

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 04/01/2013 01:08

Vinegar?? Bleurgh!

wtf1981 · 04/01/2013 01:50

Water for me! Then add mayo, black pepper and a touch of lemon or vinegar or both!

Bogeyface · 04/01/2013 02:00

Oily tuna is vile! Bought it once by mistake and not even the kids would eat it and they will eat anything!

I prefer it in water but wont pay the extra so we have it in brine which I drain to desert dryness and then mix with mayo (which I realise probably misses the point totally as mayo is mainly oil!)

TraineeBabyCatcher · 04/01/2013 02:04

Tuna in brine everyday.
However, maybe not for a while as tuna in a tin is not my friend atm having sliced 2/3s of the end of my finger off with a tin this evening. Such fun- I just loving spending the evening in a&e.
